HOLY CROSS HIGH SCHOOL SESSION 2017/2018 ISSUE 6 DECEMBER 2017 May I on behalf of all of the staff at Holy Cross High School wish all of our parents and, of course, our young people a Very Happy and Holy Christmas As you know this school term has been extremely busy and extremely successful with our young people, as you would expect, achieving fantastic success in a variety of fields: debating, sporting, musical, academic and of course in the charity work which is such a wonderful tradition in Holy Cross High School, and is ongoing throughout the school year. Back in October, the school community dressed in pink in support of Breast Cancer Charities, raising a tremendous 2563.55 in the process. Throughout the Advent Charities appeals, once again we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of all members of our school community. Various fundraising events have been taking place across the school, including our Christmas Food Parcels Appeal. The Mathematics Department held various events such as; St Andrew s Day Lunch for staff, Karaoke for all year groups as well as a quiz and fun activities for all young people. In the process they raised an amazing 1950. From this 80 food parcels were assembled and distributed to the most vulnerable in our associated primaries. In addition, we gave 150 each to the Hamilton Churches Drop-in Centre and the Wayside Club in Glasgow, 150 to the SVDP Senior Citizens lunch, 280 to the HCHS Valentine s Alma Party and 50 to St John the Baptist Senior Citizen s Lunch. As always we would like to thank friends/colleagues at Morrison s Superstore in Hamilton, not only for donating packs of shortbread and the bags-for-life to make up the parcels, but also for their continued support of our appeal. Pictured below are some of our S3 and S6 helpers. They did a fantastic job, packing the bags and making them ready to be sent out. Well done to all on such a fantastic effort. A Happy and a Holy Christmas From Everyone at Holy Cross High School

JUNIOR BAND MARCH INTO THE FINALS On Saturday the 2 nd of December 2017, the Junior Band were the first group from Holy Cross High School Music Department to compete in the Scottish Concert Band Festival. The band worked extremely hard in the lead up to the contest and achieved a Gold Award. This is a fantastic achievement especially for their first time competing in a National contest. The band will now progress to the finals which take place in the Perth Concert Hall in March. Well done to Ms Lyon, all of the music staff and of course all band members on such a fantastic achievement. CHRISTMAS CONCERT : WEDNESDAY 20 TH DECEMBER We look forward to seeing you all this evening at 7.00 pm for our Christmas Concert: Apart from all of the fantastic performances, hot dogs, mulled wine, tea/coffee and cakes will be on sale. What more could you ask for?

The Holy Cross Christmas Concert is on Wednesday 21 st at 7:00pm. Tickets are on sale in the Music Department 5 or 3.

SPORTS COUNCIL UPDATE On Tuesday 28 th November and 5 th December 2017 our sport council organised sport challenges during lunchtime which all S1 pupils could compete in. Pupils had the opportunity to participate in six challenges and compete for their tutor group. The six challenges pupils could participate in were: Speed bounce, basketball shooting, rowing, cycling, shuttle runs and long jump. Massive well done to all pupils who participated in the challenges. Individual winners for each challenge will receive a medal and the winning tutor group will receive a trophy. Results will be announced at assembly. S1 Christmas cracker dodgeball festival Next event our sport council will be running this year is a Christmas cracker Dodgeball tournament for S1. The tournament will take place on Tuesday 19th December 2017 and will cost 1 per person. It will take place between period 6 & 7 (2.00pm-3.40pm). Participants should wear normal P.E. kit for event. All pupils will be allocated into a team at the start of the event. We hope to see as many S1 pupils as possible participating!!

Our Netball teams are having continued success in both league and Scottish Cup this year! Both the S3 & Senior team have progressed into the knock out stages after Christmas and the seniors are currently undefeated in the League. Here s hoping both teams winning streak continues for the remainder of the season. The girls are also having lots of success out with school with 9 girls being selected for the district squads and 3 of these also being selected for the Scottish South Development squad. Well Done girls!

Our very successful Senior Netball Team

VISIT TO THE NEWBERRY ROONEY CENTRE This year a group of S5/6 pupils went along to our annual Christmas carol singing at the Newberry Rooney centre. This is a lovely tradition we have here in Holy Cross that has been running now for 5 years! It is enjoyed immensely by the service users and pupils alike. Mrs Douglas leads the S5/S6 group in some carol singing

On route to the Newberry Rooney Centre our S5/S6 students Jazz Hands!

ST ANDREW S HOSPICE Some of our young people - including some of our St Andrew s Hospice Ambassadors presented a cheque for 3902.80 to one of the staff. Well done to all of our students for all of their hard work and effort. S5/S6 SNOWBALL On Tuesday 19 th December our young people in S5 and S6 danced the night away at this year s Snowball Event in the Function Suite at Hamilton Academicals Football Stadium. The young people looked absolutely fantastic in their Christmas outfits; and the staff turned out in huge numbers to give their support. Many thanks to Mrs Rea and to the S6 Social Committee for all their planning and organisation.

COFFEE MORNING IN AID OF THE INNOCENTS On Monday 18 th December out annual coffee morning took place in the Street Area. This is a fantastic tradition in Holy Cross High School, which we think has been ongoing every year since 1976. For Mrs Lynch our Faculty Head of the Home Economics/Technical this year marks her 20 th year of organising and planning the event. Every year we aim to send around 1000 to the Sisters in Innocent House, Motherwell, and they are always delighted to receive our support. Current staff, former staff and friends of Holy Cross High School are in attendance, and the food, cakes, coffee, tea etc will be provided by the young people in the Home Economics Department. Many thanks to Mrs Lynch, Mrs Cameron and Ms Anderson for all they have done in organising this tremendous event and to all of the staff/parents and young people. St Andrew s Day Charities The Maths Department once again organised a number of events over St Andrew s Day to help raise funds for Christmas Food Parcels. Mrs Scott crafted a number of delightful Christmas items, which were sold over the run-up to the Festive season, with all the money raised going towards the food parcels. The Maths Department then hosted a St Andrew s day lunch, at which a variety of delicious homemade soups and other sweet dessert items were provided and then very much enjoyed by all attending. This Maths department then followed this up with a St Andrew s Fun Day for all students, during which each year group participated in a number of events including a series of morphed images of some weel-kent faces which the students then had to identify. Who could these be?

S6 students assisting the Maths Dept. to make up the 80 Christmas parcels

The completed Christmas parcels As a result of all that fundraising a grand total of 80 Food Parcels have been provided. In addition to this a donation of 150 was given to The Wayside Club, a donation of 150 was given to the Hamilton Churches Drop-in Centre, a donation of 50 was given to the Senior Citizens Lunch Club, and a donation of 280 was given towards the ALMA Club Disco. S1 PANTO TRIP: OH YES THEY DID! On Tuesday 12 th December the English department took 100 first year pupils to see the Panto- Dick Whittington at the McRoberts Arts Centre at Stirling University. This was a great success and our young people had a fantastic day out. As always our youngsters were a credit to their families and to Holy Cross High School. S2 CINEMA TRIP Many thanks to Mr Fearon for organising the annual trip to the cinema for our young people in Second Year. This year all of the young people had the opportunity to attend The Vue Cinema to see Justice League.
