College Visit Sign Ups in Naviance Log into Naviance Select Colleges, then College Visits Register for the visit- sign up 2 days in advance

Step 1- College Application Process 1. Research the colleges you are thinking about applying to Visit college websites Research colleges and careers in Naviance

College Searches in Naviance Naviance offers 5 college search tools Reference Guides can be found on the home page of Naviance Student

College Profile Pages in Naviance Students can see a college profile once a search has been completed. The profile provides the following college information: overview, studies, student life, admissions, and cost.

Career Search Tools in Naviance Naviance offers 3 career search tools, career lookups, career clusters and pathways, and Roadtrip Nation. Strengths Explorer: Strengths assessment of 78 questions that assesses 10 talent themes for students and identifies the student s strongest talents. Career Interest Profiler: Career interest assessment that will display student s Holland Code matches. Career Cluster Finder: Students can learn career clusters that may be a good match for them based on activities of interest, personal qualities they have, and subjects they enjoy.

Step 2- College Application Process 3. Organize yourself. Create a list of colleges you plan to apply to and take notes on the following: Undergraduate Admission Criteria Application Requirements Application type you plan to use Application Deadlines- not all colleges have the same first deadline Program of Study- Major Admission-Based (Merit) Scholarships you may qualify for Other Scholarships Available & Eligibility Requirements Any other notes you see fit

Research College Admission Websites

Pay Attention to Deadlines For Indiana University: Every college is different! Applications will be considered incomplete if ALL materials are not submitted on time.

Pay Attention to Deadlines For Purdue University:

Example of Application Requirements For Indiana University:

Decide on Application type if the College offers more than 1 Option For Indiana University:

Apply IU Application- Recommended if applying to more than one IU campus

The Common Application Many colleges use the Common Application as an application for admission. The Common App allows students to complete one application that can be sent separately to multiple schools. Visit www.commonapp.org to see which colleges accept the Common Application. It is very important for students to connect their Common App account to their Naviance Student account.

Common Application Resources How to Apply link on Common App website Video Tutorials within Common App Instructions and Help notes Common App Video tutorials (also available on Naviance home page) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=pl8keaorkn10czbznllkklg4n-jz9ivvgc

Choosing which Application to use for each college in your list Many colleges offer more than one application, allowing students to select the application they want to use. It is very important to create your list of colleges and the applications they offer. Then note which applications you plan to complete/submit for each college in your list. Ex) Student plans to apply to: IU Bloomington, IUPUI, Butler, Marian, Hanover, Ball State Applications they offer: IU Bloomington: Apply IU application, Common Application, Coalition Application IUPUI: Apply IU application, Common Application Butler: Butler application, Common Application Marian: Marian application Hanover: Hanover application, Common Application Ball State: Ball State application

Choosing the Applications Marian Ball State Complete Marian application (only application available) Complete Ball State application (only application available) Indiana University IUPUI Butler Hanover Apply IU Application Common Application If students apply to more than one IU campus, it is best to complete the Apply IU application. There is only one application fee on the Apply IU application for any number of IU campuses a student selects. It is really up to the student on the selection of their application for each college. The Common Application is a work in progress and definitely longer than other applications, but at the same time, is one application that can be completed yet submitted separately to multiple colleges. There is no advantage to complete one application over the other. Check the admissions websites of each college in your list to see what applications they offer.

Step 3- College Application Process 3. Have your test scores sent to college(s) from testing companies Log in to your SAT and ACT accounts & send your test scores to the colleges you are applying to Check your sent scores in your accounts to see if you sent them when first registering for the tests

SAT and ACT Information Websites: www.sat.org and www.act.org Recommended to take writing/essay portion Most colleges will super-score if more than one set of test scores are sent Most colleges require official SAT and ACT scores to be sent directly to them from student SAT and ACT accounts If scores have not been sent yet, students may make their requests to have them sent through their SAT/ACT account they created when they first registered for the test. Recommended to check SAT/ACT accounts to see history of scores sent already (double-check!) We do not want students to miss deadlines due to missing test scores!

SAT & ACT Test Dates- 2018-19 2018-2019 ACT Register at: act.org 2018-2019 SAT Register at: collegeboard.org Test Dates Registration Deadline *September 8, 2018 August 10, 2018 October 27, 2018 September 28, 2018 *December 8, 2018 November 2, 2018 *February 9, 2019 January 11, 2019 April 13, 2019 March 8, 2019 June 9, 2019 May 3, 2019 July 13, 2019 June 14, 2019 Test Dates Registration Deadline August 25, 2018 July 28, 2018 *October 6, 2018 September 7, 2018 November 3, 2018 October 5, 2018 December 1, 2018 November 2, 2018 *March 9, 2019 February 8, 2019 May 4, 2019 April 5, 2019 June 1, 2019 May 3, 2019 *Test given at BHS *Test given at BHS

Naviance SAT Test Prep Students have access to Naviance SAT Test Prep Students can select the SAT test they are planning to take A study plan will be individualized for the student SAT Test Prep is located on the Naviance home page

Step 4- College Application Process 4. Request letter(s) of recommendation in Naviance if a requirement or want any sent to schools Check college admission websites to see if they are required or recommended and the number of LORs needed If applying to a selective college, definitely visit their admission websites for information on letters of recommendation required (some may require specific letters from certain content areas)

Teacher Letters of Recommendation Teacher letters of recommendation are sent to colleges through Naviance. BHS teachers upload letters to Naviance and then we will send them. Please give the recommender at least 2 weeks notice To request a letter of recommendation, it is important for students to request it in Naviance. See the College Application Checklist handout for step-by-step instructions. Students can request a LOR to (1) a specific college(s) from their Colleges I m Applying To list or (2) All current and future colleges they add to Colleges I m Applying to.

Do not Invite Recommenders in Common App Since we use Naviance to send teacher recommendations, students should request the letters from teachers in Naviance, not in Common App.

Biography for Letters of Recommendation in Naviance

Step 5- College Application Process 5. Complete & submit application(s) online from the college website(s) It is very important to complete the application in its entirety. List Mrs. Martin as your counselor on applications if they ask. Be sure to list extra-curricular activities, awards received, jobs/internships, volunteer work, leadership positions, etc. It is important to research the college websites and understand which deadline you are applying for (Early Action, Regular Decision, Rolling Admissions, etc.) Some applications have personal statements or essays, and some do not. It depends on the college as to what their requirements are. Perfect your essay before submitting the application.

Courses & Grades Section in Common App Purdue University requires applicants to self-report their high school courses and grades. The high school transcript is helpful with this task. Students may e-mail Mrs. Martin or Mrs. Frazer to receive a copy of their transcript.

Courses & Grades Section in Common App Be sure to request your transcript in Naviance even if self-reporting your course grades. Indicate yes to these questions- If you are applying to a college that requires you to complete the Courses & Grades Section in Common App, please ask for a copy of your transcript in advance. Leave the Final Semester Grade BLANK for each class- only indicate your letter grades for S1 & S2 For the Final credits, add your S1 & S2 credits for each class

Education/Grades Section of Common App Students can find their class rank & cumulative GPA in Naviance. How to mark the Grades part of the Education section of the Common App:

Common App Submission For IU-Bloomington For Purdue All sections will switch from Incomplete to Ready when complete. Then students can submit the app. Submit Submit For IU s Common App, students must submit both the Application and Writing Supplement separately. Submit the Application first followed by the Writing Supplement. Submit For PU s Common App, students must submit only the Application. The Writing Supplement is not required for Purdue.

Application Fees & Fee Waivers Most applications have a fee (many private schools do not) It varies by college on the fee amount Students who receive lunch assistance and/or are a 21 st Century Scholar qualify for a fee waiver. If students do qualify for a fee waiver, they should mark it on the college application. If students are submitting the Common Application to a college, you will need to complete the fee waiver section on your profile and we will verify your eligibility in Naviance when sending your transcript and Common App school report to the college. If students are submitting a non-common Application (like IU s Apply IU Application), they need to see Mrs. Martin in person for a fee waiver form.

Step 6- College Application Process 6. Request transcript in Naviance for the college you have applied to Be sure to request the transcript AND mark that you have applied Don t forget to mark the application type if the college offers more than one application If you have applied to a college since we started school, please log in to Naviance and request your transcript. Please give us time to submit transcripts.

Requesting Transcripts in Naviance Select Colleges I m applying to in Naviance Select the Add button sign if you have not added the college to your list From the Add New College Application Page, answer the questions according to college Select ADD AND REQUEST TRANSCRIPT Mark Initial for the type of transcript you are requesting & make sure the correct college is listed Select Request and Finish

Requesting Transcripts in Naviance We ask that students request the transcript after they have actually submitted an application Transcript requests must be made in Naviance by the students. We ask that students not ask us to do it for them. Students should request their transcript and submit applications in advance of a deadline- they should not wait until right before a deadline (not all colleges have the same deadline) It is very important that students mark they have submitted their application in Naviance If a student uses the college s own application or the Coalition application, I ll submit my application should be marked as Direct to the institution. If a student uses the Coalition application, they need to check the box in their application indicating they will send their transcript separately (i.e., by requesting it in Naviance)

Matching the Common App Account with Naviance Students need to type their e-mail address in the box provided- the same e-mail address that was used for their Common Application account (if they submitted the Common App) Click Match Accounts to match their Naviance account to their Common App

Steps 7 & 8- College Application Process 7. Frequently check e-mail for communications from college(s) you applied to 8. Create an account with the college(s) to check your Application Status to ensure all materials have been received

Application Status & Communication from Colleges Students should regularly check communications from the college(s) Some colleges may communicate to students via e-mail to let them know if all materials have been received (application, transcript, test scores, application fee, any required letter of rec, etc) Some colleges may inform students to create an account with them in order to check their Application Status to ensure all materials have been received. It varies by college on the turn-around time for receiving an admission decision. Students should regularly check their e-mail, mail, and any accounts they have created with the college. If a college has given you a deferred/waitlisted decision, please let Mrs. Martin know. The college will want additional information to be sent, such as new test scores and/or 7 th semester grades (1 st semester of senior year).

College Applications GOAL for Seniors: SUBMIT AT LEAST 1 COLLEGE APPLICATION BY THE END OF SEPTEMBER! *Please encourage your son/daughter to apply to more than 1 college their senior year. 2-3 colleges is recommended.

Common Inquiries Student high school transcripts include semester grades from years 9, 10, 11 as well as test scores, cumulative GPA, and rank. There is some processing time between the time a transcript is submitted to a college and the actual received date by the college; it is best to not wait until the last minute to submit an application & request a transcript. It is very important for seniors to finish the year strong- final transcripts will be sent to attending colleges next summer. Students should contact us if they need a transcript for a scholarship. Transcripts are not sent to scholarship organizations through Naviance. They are only sent to colleges We cannot see if test scores have been sent to colleges. We cannot see if all student materials have been received by the college. Only students can check their status. We can only see if the transcript, school report, & letters of rec have been sent via Naviance. We do not receive notifications of application submissions from colleges. It is important for seniors to let me know if they are applying to selective schools

Scholarships Brownsburg local scholarships will become available in the spring & awarded at Senior Honors Night This is where we will post scholarship information received in the office. Research collegespecific scholarship criteria and deadlines via the admissions & financial aid websites
