MARSHALL COUNTY NEWS Beef Bits Time to start thinking about new projects for the new year. We have set the weigh-in date for this winter. Beef weigh in on Saturday, December 17th from 9 am to 12 pm We know that we might have some exhibitors that can not make this work due to other activities. If you can not make it on this day you MUST call the Extension Office ahead of time to let them know where you will be going to weigh in your projects and you MUST pick up a packet from them before you go with Marshall Co Beef tags and paperwork along with instructions. Also a reminder that someone else can weigh in your calves for you on the day stated above and we can certainly help make that happen. All the exhibitor needs to do is sign off on a form that is at the extension office giving permission for another person to weigh them in. If you have any questions about the information stated above please feel free to contact the office or a member of the beef committee. Also, please remember when you are finding your new market animals to weigh in, if they are a registered breed then please get the paperwork going as soon as possible. When you come to weigh in you will need to have the calf tattooed, and we will need to have the tattoo number, sire registration name and sire registration number. So please be prepared with this information. Please call anyone on the beef committee if you have any questions. Thank you. MARSHALL COUNTY NEWS Marshalltown High School 4-H Club Community Service Project: RSVP Winterization Members from the Marshalltown High School 4-H Club decided to make their service project for fall 2016 a learning experience. They had the opportunity to work in partnership with Central Iowa RSVP, for their Weatherization Program. The program mainly benefits homes from people with limited resources; the program helps protect their houses for the cold season. Kids learned to protect windows with plastic wraps, sealed them, moved stuff around (if needed), putting insolation or protections around doors, etc. At first, most of us didn t know how to weatherize homes, but we all learned from experience. Vanessa Ceren Many of them also learned the importance of team work. For many it was the first time actually interacting with other members of the club one on one basis. They used their communication skills and along with some of the Club s Leaders successfully accomplished the service. Working together was the key for great communication, and it made the whole day go smoother. Javier Nunez One of the things they experiences was the exposure of living in poverty. This experience created a huge impact in some of the club s members. Sometimes we take for granted what we have and being able to see what s going on around your community makes you think you re lucky for what you have. -Daisy Lopez. I learned a lot from this experience. Not many people live at their best and they need the help, they wouldn t have been able to do it on they own and I m glad we helped them out. Rosie Estrada Over all, it was a great experience and these club members had the opportunity to explore their citizenship skills. They went out there and helped the community, especially by helping families that really needed this service. We congratulate them all and we are ready to see what other projects they can be part of around the their community. Iowa State University Marshall County Extension 2608 S 2nd St Marshalltown, IA 50158 Thank You to all our volunteers! One of the greatest aspects about the Marshall County 4-H Program is the many volunteers that help provide a quality experience to youth. We are so blessed to have so many volunteers, long and short term, that assist with various projects. There would not be a Marshall County 4-H Program without the many caring adults willing to help out in times of need. If you are interested in volunteering please, contact Chelsea or Amy at the Extension Office for more information.
