R u n c o r n S t a t e S c h o o l P a g e 1 Term 4, Week 6 12 November 2015 646 Beenleigh Road, Runcorn Q 4113 PO Box 3185, Sunnybank South Q 4109 Website: www.runcornss.eq.edu.au Email: admin@runcornss.eq.edu.au Phone: (07) 3323 8777 From the Principal. Welcome Congratulations to all the students who received awards on Parade this week. It is great to see students demonstrating the You Can Do it Keys to success and working to the best of their ability in all classrooms. Congratulations to all the ICAS Test award recipients this week. Well done to all the students who participated and led to an outstanding overall school result. Well done to the Year 5 s, 4C and Year 6 s for their Parade presentations over the past weeks. Year 5 s showcased Dancing as part of their arts curriculum unit, 4C demonstrated the Day for Daniel safety strategies and Year 6 presented their Peace Posters as part of the Rotary Peace Poster Competition. Thank you to all these students and teachers for their wonderful performances. Students Returning 2016 Each year, schools need to predict the number of students who will start the school year in each year level so that classes can be organised accordingly. A form has gone home to all families asking if any children will not be returning. We are asking all families to complete and return the form or email admin@runcornss.eq.edu.au if you have a child in a class from Prep Year 5 this year WHO WILL NOT be returning to the school in 2016. This will enable our Admin team to more accurately predict our class numbers for 2016. Please phone the Office on (07) 3323 8777 if you have any queries. Prep Orientation A reminder that Prep Orientation is this Friday 9.30 11.00am. If you know of families with Prep-aged children who have not enrolled yet, please forward this information. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to familiarise themselves with the Runcorn State school Prep environment. There are still a very small number of places available but these are filling quickly. If you have family or friends who have Prep-aged children 2016 and want to come to Runcorn, they need to contact the school office immediately to organise a placement. Congratulations Swimmers On Friday night, the annual Queensland Primary Schools Invitational Swimming Relay Championship was held at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre. Chandler, Hugh, Braydan, Deneka and Fletcher were very successful and placed in 2nd position for both freestyle and medley relays. Student Attendance Our attendance rates at school have slowed this semester and dropped below our 94% target to sit at 93%. It is important that as families we make every effort to ensure our children s success by giving them the opportunity to access learning. Thank you to all families who ensure that their children turn up on time every day and make sure that attendance is regular. Runcorn State School is dedicated to trying to make a difference for every child, every lesson, every day. In order for the school to be able to effectively achieve this, we need to ensure regular attendance and being on time.

R u n c o r n S t a t e S c h o o l P a g e 2 Please ensure you are sending your child to school every day for the remainder of the school year. Disco Thanks to the P&C and helpers who hosted the final Disco for 2015. Fluoro was the theme and there was a great turnout of students and their parents. Thanks to everyone who supported it, came along and enjoyed a great family night out. P&C Thank you to everyone who attended the School Council meeting on Tuesday of last week. The final P&C Meeting for 2015 will be held on Tuesday 1 December 7pm in the library. Have a great week Greg Gosling From the Deputy Principal. New Start Date for New School Year in 2016 The new start date for school in 2016 will be 27 th January 2016 and not as previously advised as the 25 th January 2016. Parents will be required to make alternative arrangements for their children on this day as there will be no staff on the premises. The Vacation Care program will also be conducted off the premises and the Out of School Hours Care will recommence on the 27 th January 2016. We look forward to welcoming our students including our new Preps on the 27 th January 2016. Lost Property There is a large amount of unnamed clothing and other personal items in the Lost Property bin under B block. All unclaimed items will be donated to charity if not collected by Week 10. Roberta Matlock Junior Swim Carnival (Yrs 1 & 2) is Friday 20th November 9-11am It would be great if students wore their swimming attire to school under their uniform as we won t have a lot of time for changing. Please remember to pack your child underwear though as they will be getting changed after. It is also a good idea to pack two towels, a jumper, swim cap, water bottle, and their fruit break in their swim bag that day if possible. All students are expected to participate to earn points for their team. The aim for the day is participation and water safe fun. Parents and Carers are encouraged to attend to cheer on our students. Mrs Wood, PE Teacher Digital Technology - Year 2 Penpals. This term, the Year 2 students in Geography and Digital Technologies, have been learning about how people and places are connected. Students learnt to email and connect to another class on the other side of the world in order to compare similarities and differences in the living and schooling environment. The students have been very excited about developing their questions to email their Penpals in Year 1 in Jacksonville, America. This week the students were amazed to finally see a photo of their Penpals! They will also be receiving a snail mail in the post in the following week.

R u n c o r n S t a t e S c h o o l P a g e 3 Music Matters It is that time of year where we all come together and celebrate the commitment and the effort that has gone into our music program. We have several events remaining on the calendar. The Band Breakup concert and party will be on Wednesday the 18 th of November at 1:50pm in Girrawheen Place. The Strings Breakup concert and party will be held the following week, on Tuesday the 24 th of November at 9:30pm, also in Girrawheen Place. Our Year Six Choral and Instrumental students will be awarded medals at a special parade in Girrawheen Place on Monday, the 23 rd of November at 2:30pm. Of course, we have our fantastic End of Year Concert coming up at the Sunnybank High School Hall on Wednesday the 2 nd of December at 6:00pm. Please come along to these events and show your support. We have had an overwhelming number of applications for our band and strings program in 2016. It is wonderful that so many students and their parents want to learn an instrument and can make the commitment to do so. Offers have now been sent out. Due to high demand, several students are on a waiting list. Thank you to all who have brought their forms back and paid the fee. It really helps to have this sorted out now, so that we can begin lessons straight away in the new year. Mrs Margaret Buddle Yr 5 Camp to Tallebudgera Beach School. Apart from enjoying all the activities, we displayed brilliant teamwork and the Five Keys to Success while we were in our cabins, at the dinner table and during free time. Altogether we had a marvellous time at Tallebudgera Beach School. This year the Grade Five students went to Tallebudgera Beach School for four days. We experienced a wide range of activities, but the highlights were canoeing, tobogganing and beach challenges. These activities were awesome because of their exhilarating rush and the outstanding co-operation displayed by all the students. By Lani and Joseph
