38442 Fremont Blvd. Fremont, CA 94536 Washington High School Parent/Community Newsletter June/Summer 2018 (510) 505-7300 Fax (510) 794-8437 www.fremont.k12.ca.us Dear Washington High School Families, With June upon us the 2017-18 school year has come to an end. We have four very important Huskies who are retiring this year. Mr. John Wharton, Ms. Kirsten Marie, Mrs. Reba Simpson, and Ms. Iris Ackerson are all retiring after many fine years of service at Washington High. They will be missed tremendously. Once again, the entire sophomore class completed an I-Search Benchmark Project and then presented their findings to their peers. The 10th grade students did a fantastic job on this project, as did the teachers who supported them. I am very proud of the juniors for their diligent work on the new CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) test. This test measures the new Common Core State Standards in English and Math. Juniors will receive individual test scores for their efforts on this exam later this summer. The Visual and Performing Arts programs at Washington had another strong year. The Spring concert was the highlight of a trio of concerts conducted by Ms. Amberle Mitchell this year. The Spring Musical, the Adams Family, was highly entertaining and a real showcase of the dramatic talent at Washington. Mr. Koppel has done a nice job as the Drama director in his first year at Washington. I encourage all students who have an interest in music, drama, or art to try out for the plays, or to sign up for Drama, Band, Choir, Art, Ceramic, or Orchestra classes. I promise it will be a rewarding experience for them. Participation in Spring Sports was again at an all-time high and all of the teams did well. Baseball and the Girls Swim team won the MVAL league title this year. The girls swim team sent representatives to swim in the State Championship meet. Softball had a great season and the team got better as the year progressed. Lacrosse is in its second year participating in a new league and both the boys and girls teams played very well. We were especially proud that Lacrosse played at Tak Fudena Stadium for their Senior night. Track had a good season and sent several representatives to the NSC track meet. On behalf of the entire Washington High School staff, I hope your summer break is enjoyable. Have a great time with your students! School starts again on August 29. Sincerely, Bob Moran, Principal

CONGRATULATIONS TO WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2018! 2018 2019 First Day of School is Wednesday, August 29, 2018. All students are expected to report to school on the first day of school. Students who are not in school the first three days of school may have their class schedules altered. The only exceptions will be students who are absent due to illness. If a student is absent during the first three days due to illness, parents or guardians must notify the school every day the student is absent. Seats will not be held for students on extended vacations or other optional activities. Class of 2019 Senior Portraits for the Yearbook Whether you buy a portrait package from them or not, you must use Studio 1 for your senior portrait in the yearbook. Because of deadlines, your yearbook senior portrait must be taken over the summer. Please call Studio 1 as soon as possible to schedule your appointment. (925) 361-0430 On behalf of the school, Studio 1 will collect a $5 contribution from each senior to help pay for the senior section of the yearbook. If you are not purchasing a package, there are no other charges.

Maze is a critical part of the beginning of the year. Each student turns in all required paperwork found on our website under newsletter. In August, you will receive by mail the emergency form and Parent/Student Signature page that must be turned in at MAZE. During MAZE students take their school photo, purchase ASB cards, yearbooks, Husky Planners, pick out a locker and get one (as long as you have a lock), sign up for clubs and class activities, receive their schedule and get their textbooks. There is no makeup day for this event so it is critical that you come at your assigned time. No lockers will be issued after these dates. No student will be permitted to class without an I.D. Exact times will be announced in the August Newsletter. Seniors - August 21 Tuesday (morning hours) Sophomores- August 22 Wednesday (morning hours) Juniors - August 21 Tuesday (afternoon hours) Freshmen August 22 Wednesday (afternoon hours) FALL 2019 SENIOR PARKING Paperwork available now for Senior Parking in the front office with your attendance clerk or Ms. Fleischer at the office front counter.
