GENERAL INFORMATION A FIRST OF ITS KIND IN SOUTH AFRICA The University of the Free State in the city of Bloemfontein is situated in the Free State province in the central interior of South Africa. The university was founded in 1904 and currently serves more than 0 000 residential and nonresidential students, with excellent growth prospects for the future. Its proud academic traditional and progressive learning programmes make the University of the Free State one of the top academic institutions in the country. The Business School in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at this University, has established itself as a leader in South Africa in the provision of management development programmes. A dynamic addition to this spectrum of management programmes on offer, is an excellent Bachelor in Management Leadership (BML) aimed at working adult learners. This qualification is based on experiential learning and the assessment and recognition of prior learning. The objective of the BML is to deliver a new generation of formally qualified and innovative managerial leaders equipped to excel in, and add value to today s corporate and business environment. The BML programme is developed in collaboration with the School for New Learning at DePaul University in Chicago. 1
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS The BML programme is a selection course. Over and above the general regulations regarding admission to this University, the following specific entrance requirements must be met: 3 years of age a permanent work appointment and an endorsed senior certificate with at least years working experience or a senior certificate with at least years working experience or a grade 10 certificate with at least 5 years working experience or a certificate with conditional exemption issued by the Matriculation Board with at least years working experience or an equivalent qualification and proficiency in English proficiency in Mathematics adequate computer literacy a motivational essay regarding the student s need to participate in the programme Recognition of prior learning can only take place once the Portfolio Development Course has been completed successfully. When the Portfolio Development Course has been completed successfully, the University will apply for a certificate of exemption in terms of admission approved by its Senate. THE RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING IS A DEVELOPMENTAL AND CREDIT BEARING COMPONENT IN THE BML PROGRAMME Recognition of prior learning The degree programme is designed to engage learners in active learning styles (discussions, projects, essays) rather than passive learning styles (lectures, memorisation, testing). Therefore, the Business School is flexible regarding the acceptable means for satisfying the formal degree requirements. Apart from the required portfolio courses, learners may gain credit for modules through previous coursework, learning from life and work experience, as well as independent study. Learners should apply for credits if sufficient prior knowledge and skills can be demonstrated. Requests for credit are considered by a review committee. Duration The programme is primarily aimed at part-time students. Each module earns the learner a specific amount of credits. Learners must obtain 360 credits to obtain the degree. The expected and recommended duration of study for part-time learners is 4 years. However, this period may be shorter if a learner obtains credits for sufficient prior learning and skills demonstrated. Assessment The BML programme has a system of continuous assessment. Assessment procedures may include tests, field exercises and reports, teamwork exercises, class
participation and presentation, independent projects and dissertations, simulated research applications, consultant reports and integrated assessment. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The BML programme consists of the following three learning areas: 1. Environment Some of the modules comprising this learning area are: International finance Africa in the new global order Labour law Political dynamics Cultural diversity and its influence on an economic enterprise A basic understanding of the challenges and constraints facing government in the economy Understanding basic macro-economics A basic understanding of the role of labour in the economy The impact of environmental factors on management decisions The financial system and interest rate predictions The objective of the BML is to deliver a new generation of formally qualified and innovative managerial leaders equipped to excel in, and add value not only to today s corporate and business environment but also to the public sector.. Management Some of the modules comprising this learning area are: General management (private and public sector) Entrepreneurship Financial accounting Strategic marketing management Environmental dynamics in public sector management Organizing and co-operative governance Small business management Public financial management Managing the quality of public service delivery Project management within the public sector 3. Leadership Some of the modules covered in this learning area include: A development model of leadership Becoming an effective leader Confronting change, stress and time management Diversity within the African context Becoming a creative thinker and decision maker Understanding the power game Conflict Motivation, perceptions and attitudes Human resource management Ethical leadership 3

WE BRING THE UNIVERSITY TO YOUR DOORSTEP WITH A MODE OF DELIVERY TO SUIT YOU BEST! Face to Face The programme is offered on campus on a part-time basis. Students attend classes on Friday afternoons from 13:15 19:00. Online The Business School has an online option that will bring learning right to your doorstep. Except for the introductory Portfolio Development Course and a few critical modules, the BML programme is also presented online. Modular Students attend classes by coming to campus four times per year for a full week. Graduates of this programme will be able to compete successfully in the domestic economy. On completion of the BML, learners may continue with postgraduate studies in several directions. Access to our MBA is also an option should all admission and selection criteria be satisfied. 5
