HS2 provides Beaverton s diverse population a rigorous and innovative health and science education. District Goal for 2010 2015 All students will show continuous progress toward their personal learning goals, developed in collaboration with teachers and parents, and will be prepared for postsecondary education and career success. The Beaverton School District recognizes the diversity and worth of all individuals and groups. It is the policy of the Beaverton School District that there will be no discrimination or harassment of individuals or groups based on race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, marital status, age, veterans status, genetic information, or disability in any educational programs, activities, or employment. Notes from the Principal Dear HS2 Families and Friends, First, on behalf of the entire HS2 staff, I'd like to wish our entire community a Happy New Year! We hope that 2014 promises to be a great year for our entire community! Second, I want to announce very exciting news that we've received from the Oregon Department of Education: On January 7th, the Oregon Department of Education announced the award of over $350,000 to HS2 for the continued development of Career Technical Education (CTE) programming in Engineering and Biomedical Science. We are delighted to share that this award will support HS2 students, staff, and the community with equipment, training, and time in the following five key areas of this large project: 1) This award will enable the Health and Science School (HS2) to develop and support CTE programs that will double the number of student internships at HS2. 2) We will create and host summer bridge programs for district-wide, at-risk students transitioning to high school and college. 3) We will create industry-quality video profiles of HS2 students that are successful in CTE and STEM fields. (STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) 4) We will expand CTE programming into the middle and high school levels in both Biomedical Sciences and Engineering. As a result, middle school students will have experiences in math and science with robotics, engineering design, and medical forensics. 5) We will host a series of metro-wide networking events that will allow HS2 students, teachers, and community partners to highlight their work in CTE and STEM courses and careers. We have 10 partners who have all come forward to make deep collaborative commitments related to this project. These partners are: The American Red Cross STEM Explorers Intel Portland Metro STEM Center TV Fire and Rescue

Health and Science School Newsletter Page 2 of 6 CMD Agency Project Lead the Way Oregon Health Occupations Student Association Kaiser Westside Hospital ODOT Please check out our website for additional details on this large-scale project at HS2! We will also be sharing a "what does this mean for HS2 in detail" information sheet in the coming weeks. Finally, I have additional updates on the following: A reminder to all families with siblings interested in attending HS2 next year: please remember to fill out and send in an application before the January 24th, 4:00PM, deadline! If you receive a letter saying that your students name has gone to a wait pool please fill out the second consideration portion of this letter in order to be considered for placement at HS2. If this is not filled out your students name is not added to the second consideration list and they will not be admitted next year. A huge thank you goes out to the volunteers that came in on Wednesday, December 18th, to provide coffee and treats for HS2 staff. Everything was fantastic and very, very much appreciated, thank you! We are hosting three Open Houses for interested new families this week and next on the 9th, 14th, and 16th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Please share this with family, friends, and neighbors that you know are interested in HS2 or options schools within the Beaverton School District. Our best recruiting comes from satisfied families that are already in our community, so thank you for helping to spread the word about HS2! Thanks, and again, all the best to you and your family in the coming new year! The Creative Writing Club will continue to meet the rest of the year, every Wednesday in Ms. Cooke's room. While many students work individually during this time, others have "found each other" to work collaboratively on fiction or discuss problems or questions they have about their novels, stories, etc. The atmosphere is laid back and creative, and many students are enjoying this time to be around other people who want to write creatively. Health and Science School Newsletter Page 5 of 6 Invasive Species Most Wanted Our 8th grade science class has been studying how invasive species affect our local ecosystem. Invasive species are non-native organisms that take over the environment, causing harm to the ecosystem. We have been developing Wanted Ads for common invasive species that are either currently destroying our ecosystem or are soon going to invade our area. We hope these ads will raise awareness about invasive species as well as help our community recognize new invaders before they get out of control. This week s Most Wanted: HS/2 Students Out and About in the Community Photos of HS2 Explorers learning about CT Scans at Kaiser Westside Hospital during their December meeting which highlighted the six Imaging Modalities.
