Entering Freshman Report Fall 2017 Executive Summary: The 11,900 total applicants set a new five year high Although the number of accepted students increased, the acceptance rate decreased, along with the enrolled yield For example, 80% of applications were admitted, but of those admitted, 19% enrolled SAT average remains above the National and State average, and after a downward trend at CofC, increased sharply in 2017, concurrent with a change in SAT test methodology Out-of-state enrollment percentages rose slightly after a steady decline, as the in-state decreased slightly to 56% Female enrollment continues to surpass male enrollment with a ratio of 68% females Entering freshman headcount had trended upward over the last 4 years, but decreased in 2017 to 1,840 Some of this decline may be attributed to the number of students admitted to the Charleston Bridge Program, as these students are not official CofC students at the time of enrollment in the program The percentage of student athletes within the class rose to 6% Freshman living in College housing remains relatively stable at Greek life participation has decreased over the last two years with approximately 19% of degree-seeking undergraduates participating African-American enrollments declined from the previous two years, showing 7%, and underrepresented minorities make up 19% of the 2017 Freshman enrollment Students from New Jersey make up of the freshman class, with 87 students Charleston remains the largest county for SC enrollments at 179, topping out number two Greenville at 101 Students from Wando High School have the highest enrollment numbers from South Carolina with 58, more than doubling the second leading school, James Island Charter Average credit hour load has remained slightly above 15 for five years Average high school GPA for registered freshman has remained steady, and the percentage who graduated in their high school top tenth percentile has increased to 22% Total provisional freshman has dropped by 216 students since 2016; this decline may be attributed to the number of students admitted to the Charleston Bridge Program, as these students would have previously been classified as provisional First-time, first-year students entering as a Sophomore or Junior has decreased Enrollments for the Honors College remain fairly steady over the five-year trend, with 193 enrollments for 2017 Percentage of state scholarship recipients has increased for the LIFE and Palmetto Fellows, but decreased for the Hope scholarship; 93% of eligible students received state scholarship For merit scholarships, the tuition percent for both in-state and out-of-state for Fall 2017 was lower than previous years Biology leads the top five intended majors at 1 of the class 1 Office of Institutional Research, Planning, and Information Management
