WELCOME TO LYNNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL

High School: It s all about the credits. Really! Every credit earned is a step toward graduation. Every course you take becomes part of your permanent transcript. If you don t pass classes and don t earn credits, you fall behind You must meet all graduation requirements to graduate.

GPA (Grade Point Average) How s it calculated? A = 4.0 B = 3.0 C = 2.0 D = 1.0 F = 0.0 So if you have the following semester grades: Digital Tools B 3.0 English 9 A 4.0 Biology C 2.0 Spanish 1 C 2.0 World History 9 A 4.0 Algebra 1 B 3.0 18 / 6 classes = 3.0 Your GPA is 3.0!

Requirements for 4 year colleges Beginning with the Class of 2012, students must earn 3 credits of College Academic Distribution Requirements (CADR ) courses each year of high school. 15 Credits (in subject areas below) Note: The term credit is used to designate that a student has satisfactorily completed a CADR course during the high school academic year. Colleges do not require Personal Finance, PE, Health, or Career and Technical Education credit. English 4 credits (must include 3 credits of college preparatory composition or literature). Passage of 10 th grade HSPE-reading is equivalent to earning the first 2 CADR credits of high school English. Mathematics 3 credits (Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra II, Passage of 10 th grade HSPE-math is equivalent to earning the first 2 CADR credits of high school math (Algebra & Geometry.) Note: Successful completion of math through pre-calculus meets the requirement for 3 credits of math and the senior-year math requirement (below). Mathematics Senior year of high school, students must earn a credit in a math-based quantitative course, e.g., statistics, applied math, or appropriate career and technical courses. An algebra-based science course taken during the senior year also would satisfy this requirement and part of the science requirement below. Note: The senior-year math requirement does not mean a 4 th credit of math is required nor does it require a higher level of math. Science 2 credits of laboratory science, including one credit of algebra-based biology, chemistry, or physics. Note: Western Washington University specifies that the algebra-based science course be chemistry or physics. World Languages 2 credits of the same World Language, Native American Language, or American Sign Language. Social Science 3 credits (history or other social science) Arts 1 credit of fine, visual, or performing arts-or 1 additional credit in other CADR subject areas. Note: UW and WWU specify one-half credit in fine, visual or performing arts; the other half may be in the arts or in an academic elective.

Did you take high school classes in Middle School? These classes are: Algebra, Geometry, STEM, Spanish and French Your grade and credit will not automatically go on your LHS transcript. Parents must request it be put on and once it is, it cannot come off! You can wait until the start of your senior year to request it be put on.

Required courses are listed on this sheet. Talk to your current teachers about your choices, particularly Honors. Student and parent should sign where needed.

9 TH GRADE TECHNOLOGY OPTIONS: ALL FRESHMEN MUST CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING COURSES Digital Tools (Semester) This course provides students with hands-on experience using today s technology. Topics include Internet use and misuse, digital design, career exploration, and the opportunity to earn industry certification (Microsoft Office Specialist). Prerequisite: None Microsoft IT Academy I (Semester)* Microsoft IT Academy I provides instruction and preparation for Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification in Word and PowerPoint 2010. These certifications allow students to be successful in their academics and in the work place. Prerequisite: Students should have: skills working with computer files; comfort in reading technical material; and experience with Word and PowerPoint applications. Computer Science Principles (Semester)* CSP introduces fundamentals of computer science and computational thinking. Logical reasoning, problem solving, data representation, abstraction, the creation of Web pages and programs, managing complexity, operation of computers and networks, effective Web searching, ethical, legal and social aspects of information technology are covered. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in, or successful completion of, Algebra 1. Intro to Engineering Design (Year)* In this class, students will learn to analyze problems and design potential solutions as scientists and engineers through a series of project-based units and activities. Using powerful 3-dimensional design and modeling software called INVENTOR students will create and model their own inventions and designs. This course is part of the Project Lead the Way Pre- Engineering program and offers college credit. Prerequisite: None * College credit is available for this course.

ELECTIVE OPTIONS All the electives that 9 th graders may choose are listed on the green registration form. Pick your elective choices, and number them, in order of preference, from 1 through 4. You can get additional information on classes by referring to the 9th Grade Elective Options sheet and the online planning guide (course catalog).
