As a Catholic School, St. Pius X strives to cater for the needs of both boys and girls from Prep to Year 7, in accordance with the aims of a Catholic Philosophy of Education. A central reference point for the philosophy of our school is the Gospel of Jesus. The values that underscore every aspect of our school life are those lived and modelled by Jesus. St Pius X is committed to strive for the highest standard of education in all areas of the curriculum implemented by a professional staff. Every effort is made to keep the school resourced to meet the changing needs of modern life in the 21st century. We are part of a greater community which centres which centres on the Moorooka/Salisbury parish and extends to include the wider community of the Church. For that reason we see Parish and School as being united in a joint effort to support the task of parents in educating their children for life. Curriculum offerings Our distinctive curriculum offerings St Pius X School implements the eight Key Learning Areas as well as Religious Education based on the Brisbane Archdiocesan Religious Education Guidelines. In addition to these subjects we offer a well established Middle Years Community comprising our Year 6 and 7 students and teachers. The following distinctive curriculum activities are: * Early Years classes of Prep Year 1 and Year 2 are involved in an oral language program 'Talk,Talk,Talk'. * Tennis lessons for Years 3 and 4. * Gymnastics lessons for Years Prep to 7. * Japanese lessons weekly for Years 6 and 7. * Modern dance lessons in Term 4 for Prep-Year 7. * Swimming lessons in Term 4 for Prep - Year 7. * Off-campus sport for Years 5-7 during Term 3. * Year 6 and 7 yearly retreat day. * Bi-annual Sydney/Canberra trip for Years 6 and 7. How Information and Communication Technologies are used to assist learning The ICLT focus at St. Pius X is currently to upgrade the hardware within the school. A school-wide wireless network was installed during. There are computers in each classroom as well as a bank of computers for use in the library. At the beginning of 2011, a bank of computer lap tops were purchased for use in the Year 6 and 7 classrooms. An ICLT plan ( Information, Communication, Learning Technologies) is being developed during 2011 to coordinate the learning and teaching across the year levels, the professional development of teaching staff and resource allocation. Social climate St Pius X seeks to be responsive to the needs of the children, the staff, their families and the wider community. Our school aspires to educational excellence. Whilst recognising the uniqueness of individuals and their God-given talents, we seek to enhance the self-concept of each child and to provide a stimulating environment. Pastoral Care programs in the school include the Friends Program, Heart Masters Program, Circle Time, Mindfulness and Rock and Water. These programs support emotion management and resilience and are included in all year levels Prep - 7. At St. Pius X we follow 5 School Expectations: 1) Speak to please, not to tease; 2) Stop, look, listen; 3) Think safe, act safe, be safe; 4) Hands and feet to self and 5) Show respect, give respect, expect respect. Parent, student and teacher satisfaction with the school Through data gathering from the development of whole School Renewal Plan and through surveys conducted by the school staff and school Board in the development of policy documents, parents, children and staff see St. Pius X as a welcoming, inclusive faith community embracing quality teaching and learning, tolerance and understanding of difference. Through use of internal review data, parents comment of areas of strength within the school and areas for future development. 3
Involving parents in their child s education Our school has a very active Parents & Friends Association that enhances the great community feel of our school through arranging a variety of functions and contributing to school based decision making. Parents are actively engaged in the support of school educational programs through our volunteer network. Our School Board provides a further opportunity for parent involvement at the policy development level. The School Board developed four overarching policies which guide the Strategic Renewal Plan. The celebratory nature of the school provides a range of occasions for parents to be involved including Mother's and Father's Day, Grandparents Day, Holy Week celebrations, St. Pius X Day, Catholic Education Week, Book Week, annual Concert, annual fete, orientation days and Cultural Evenings. Parent/ Teacher interviews are conducted at the end of Term 1 and Term 3. Feedback is sought formally from parents throughout the year with surveys and focus groups relating to internal school review components.
