1. Findings of Ph.D. Thesis Title :Contribution of the Jesuits to Social Awakening in Tamil Nadu The thesis analyses the contribution of the Jesuits, who are the pioneers in education, towards social awakening in Tamil Nadu. This historico- critical research on social history has brought out the role of the Jesuits of Madurai Province in raising a critical consciousness among the suffering Dalit masses and also their contribution to the empowerment of the downtrodden through various initiatives which they had launched in different parts of Tamil Nadu from 1952 to 2002. The Jesuits of Madurai province, with their liberative thrust, were catalysts in the process of social awakening among the marginalized Dalits in Tamil Nadu. The grass-root mobilization activities of their Social Action Centres were in collaboration with the Dalit movements in the respective areas. This process was further strengthened by their economic measures, which slowly reduced the economic dependence of the Dalits on the caste people and the moneylenders. This also helped them, to a great extent, towards the economic empowerment of the Dalits, particularly women, in their areas of operation and it stimulated them to participate in the struggles to achieve equality and justice in society. The support of the Jesuits to the struggles for the equality of the Dalit Christians in the Church, particularly through the Dalit Christian Liberation Movement, caused changes in the policies and programmes in the Tamil Nadu Church too. While analyzing various factors and forces along with the Jesuits in the process there are two significant components. One is the contributory factors and the other being collaborative forces, with the Jesuits acting as conscientising agents in the task. Among the contributory factors there are three elements namely Ambedkar centenary celebrations, the emergence of Dalit literature and the formation of Dalit movements. One could notice that there has been co-operation in this venture of the awakening process among civil society groups, human rights organizations and people s movements. These are the collaborative forces. Networking among these groups helped the Jesuits in achieving the end. The cumulative effect of the social awakening activities of the Jesuits among the marginalized people was manifested in asserting the identity of the Dalits and it resulted in the emergence of the Dalits as a force in the civil society. The radical paradigm shift from charity to justice in the Jesuit mission is noticeable in the historical data available. Though started from philanthropic activities of a few individual Jesuits, the process underwent a metamorphosis before it culminated in the people- centered social mobilization and action for justice. This micro-analysis on social history also delves deeply on the methodology they adopted, movements with which they collaborated, hurdles they faced, and responses they received from various groups to their efforts in bringing social awakening. All the findings were substantiated by documentary evidences 19

with primary sources like contemporary original records, reports, documents, dispatches, photographic sources, official letters both indigenous and foreign connected to all the social action units, which are codified and presented in well organized charts and diagrams. To substantiate the conclusions and to attain greater objectivity in the research, which are inferred from the historical analysis based on various sources available on the topic, quantification was done from the questionnaire collected from the beneficiaries. ******************************************************************* 20
