Is a Pre-AP Class Right for My Child? If you are not sure your child is ready for the increased rigor of Pre-AP, but you would like them to be challenged, choose one class in a subject they enjoy or have already experienced success It is a myth that students need to take all Pre-AP classes to be prepared for advanced classes in high school Help your child make a decision that balances their academic needs and interest with all the other activities that fill his or her busy life!

Is My Child Ready for Pre-AP Math? 6th grade Pre-AP mathematics is a jam-packed curriculum that consists of all 6th grade TEKS and more than ½ of the 7th grade TEKS These standards are covered in the same amount of time as just the 6th grade TEKS in on-level math Fluency with computation is crucial Adding & subtracting whole numbers (double & triple digits) Subtracting with regrouping Multiplying & dividing whole numbers (through 12 s)

Math Pre-AP It is a common misconception that if your child has all A s and scores Advanced on the STAAR, they are ready for Pre-AP Math. Although it is a good indication, it is not the only indicator. Other indicators could include: Confidence in his/her math abilities Persistence in the face of challenges Effective problem solver Quick learner Applies mathematical reasoning in everyday life Ability to work at a fast pace learning new math skills

Physical Education (PE) All students will wear an appropriate physical education uniform that consists of a t-shirt, gym shorts, socks and athletic shoes that follow the LISD dress code policy. PE wear will be ordered from Locker Room Sports. Information about ordering will come home with student in the next few weeks. a. Athletic shoes that provide support must be worn. Shoes must be tied and fit tightly on the foot. Street shoes (hard or soft) are NOT permitted. Slip-on shoes are not allowed. b. Sweatsuits may be worn OVER the physical education uniform in cold weather conditions or at other times deemed appropriate by the teacher. c. It is recommended that the student s name be placed on each piece of the uniform in a manner that the teacher may easily identify (back of the shirt, leg on the shorts/pant, or sleeve). Nicknames are not allowed. d. Uniforms must be taken home at least once a week to be washed.

Physical Education continued LOCKER: Each student will be issued a Phys. Ed. locker and lock. Students are required to use the issued locks on their assigned locker. IMPORTANT: Check the Lamar Student Handbook for policies. No cell phones, ipads or other technology should be brought to the locker room, unless the coach advises of a Technology Day in class AND cameras of any kind may never be used in a locker room. This behavior would be a violation of the LISD Student Code of Conduct and could result in serious school consequences.

6 th grade Fine Arts Electives One elective choice must be from a Fine Arts Elective ART ORCHESTRA CHOIR BAND THEATRE

Proud feeder of the 5-Time State Champion Marcus Band!

Choir FIND YOUR VOICE! Students don t need to know how to sing! They LEARN how to sing in choir! We encourage students WITH OR WITHOUT musical experience to TRY CHOIR! SO MUCH MORE THAN SINGING!!

Choir is Professional Performances The Latest Technology Performing in Concerts Building Lasting Friendships Community Activities FUN STUFF!!!!!

Orchestra Learn to play violin, viola, cello or bass! Learn to play a variety of different musical styles, including classical, pop, rock, traditional, and folk! Activities this year included: Concerts Parties Field Trips to Altitude Jump Park, Main Event, the Dallas Symphony, and more! Contest at Sandy Lake Amusement Park

Instrument Selection 1. Help your child find the instrument they would like to learn to play. It takes a variety of instruments to make a balanced orchestra, and students may have a first or second choice of instrument. 2. Attend the Lamar Orchestra String Drive on March 7 or March 23 from 6-8 pm in the orchestra room. Contact Ms. Smith to schedule another time if neither of these work for you. 3. Make arrangements for renting your child s instrument and required supply kit. Dallas Strings will be at the string drive to make this process easier for you! If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Ms. Smith at SmithKl@lisd.net

Theatre Arts Is Theatre Arts right for your student? Are they imaginative? Are they outgoing? Are they dramatic? Are they shy? Theatre Arts is not just an elective for students who are outgoing. There are many ways for your student to participate even if they are afraid of the spotlight.

Theatre Arts Theatre Arts 6 is a beginning level class that introduces your students to all aspects of the performing art. Students will learn everything from Technical Theatre, Playwriting, and Directing, to Basic Acting Techniques, Puppetry, and Improvisation Games. A large majority of the assignments and lessons worked on are completed during class, so there is little to no outside of school time commitment. There will be an audition to perform in one play in their 6 th grade year. Real life skills worked on are: confidence, public speaking, teamwork, problem solving, creative thinking, and collaboration.

Other Elective Math Lab This is an opportunity for students who Struggle to master math skills Have difficulty with a fast pace of learning in math Often need multiple learning opportunities to master a new math skill This is not a good choice for students Who have historically been successful in math Do not need regular reteaching to learn new math skills Earned good math grades in elementary school
