Goals for Today Deepen our understanding the placement process for Advanced Studies in the Middle School Deepen our understanding the Advanced Studies placement process timeline (calendar) Deepen our understanding the Advanced Studies appeals process

Middle School Advanced Learning Program Language Arts and Seminar

ALP Language Arts Greater depth through the rigor of lessons and differentiated activities. Accelerated to include above-grade level material when appropriate. Advanced pace of learning In the case of good books, the point is not to see how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you. Mortimer J. Adler

Overview of Placement Process: ALP Language Arts Date January 5 January 8-22 Action/Task/ Event Testing Permission Letters emailed to Parents STAR administration window January 9 and 11 January 19 January 22- February 2 February 5-March 1 March 9 March 23 May 4 District wide meetings about MS ALP placement Parent/Student Nomination Deadline Additional ALP Language Arts Testing Window: CogAT Verbal Battery and Performance Task Building Advisory Committee Meetings ALP Language Arts Placement letters emailed to Parents Parent Appeal Deadline Appeal Decisions emailed to Parents

Middle School World Language

Overview of Placement Process: World Language The middle school placement process will begin with students in 5th grade as we determine the appropriate 6th grade World Language placement. Placement will be determined using the following measures: AAPPL Assessment (ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Language) (March, 2018) Average of three unit assessments (2017-2018) Native Speakers participate in the DRA2 in their Native Language in place of AAPPL assessment.

World Language Course Sequence Guide 2017-18 Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade 8 Grade 9 Spanish 6A Spanish 7A Spanish 8A Spanish 4H Spanish French Spanish 6C Spanish 7C Spanish 8C Spanish 4 Spanish 6 Native Spanish 7 Native Spanish 8 Native Spanish 2 Native Spanish 5 Native Spanish 5H Native French 6A French 7A French 8A French 3A French 6C French 7C French 8C French 3B Students are able to change languages in grade 9 or take the recommended course and an additional language as an elective (double up). Other options: ASL, Chinese, Latin, Italian, and German. Students need to qualify based on the criteria to enter the honors courses in grade 9.

Advanced Studies Appeals Process The teacher, student or parent can make requests for an appeal by completing the appeals application available on the GPS District Website. Appeals applications must be received by March 23, 2018 for Middle School ALP Language Arts placement. Appeals applications must be received by April 23, 2018 for grade 6 placement and May 18, 2018 for grades 7 and 8 Advanced Science. The Appeals Committee consists of the building administration, science teachers, STEM Coordinator, World Language Coordinator and ALP Facilitator. Other representatives are invited in to support the process. Grade 6 Math, Advanced Science and World Language Appeals Meetings: April 24-May 18, 2018. Grades 7 and 8 Advanced Science Appeals Meetings: May 21-June 4, 2018. Grade 6, 7, and 8 ALP Appeals Meetings: April 4-27. 2018.

Students New to the District Math and Science: All students new to the district will participate in a placement process to determine appropriate placement into a Math and Science class. ALP Language Arts: Participation in a gifted program in another school district does not automatically qualify a student for placement in ALP courses in Greenwich. However, because another district s placement process may give us enough information to make a placement decision, parents should submit the relevant documentation to the district ALP office. Parents should complete the test registration form available online by Thursday, August 17, 2018. All students need to be pre-registered for the testing which will take place on August 20 and 21, 2018.
