Expectations & Qualities of a Pre-AP Student The following are a few of the qualities and attributes listed by The College Board which indicate success in Pre-AP classes: The student is a confident independent reader The student seeks out challenges and new concepts The student possesses a respect and regard for literature, composition, and learning in general The student is willing to go beyond the minimum requirements of any assignment The student has the ability to listen and participate in a thoughtful exchange of ideas The student is able to accept and to offer questions for which there are no clear answers The student possesses writing abilities which demonstrate the use of controlled mechanics, grammar and usage, organization and syntax
Summer Reading Component Pre-AP courses do have a summer reading requirement. The titles are posted on the district website, and students should be notified by their 5 th grade Literacy or middle school English teacher. Summer reading will be incorporated in learning the first six-weeks of class. Parents can also contact the counseling department of their child s respective campus during the summer.
Some of the Major Differences Between Regular ILA & Pre-AP ILA Pre-Ap students are asked to read more. They are also asked to read more deeply so that they can discuss and write about the literature and the author s craft in a significant way and at a more sophisticated level. On-level ILA focuses more on comprehension and basic literary analysis, with less depth & rigor in writing assignments. Independent reading expectations are less intense in the on-level class.

Frisco Independent School District Middle School Math Programs
Why choose Pre-AP Math Classes Prepare students for Calculus AB, Calculus BC, and Statistics and to potentially earn college credit through AP exams Grade-level TEKS will be taught at a deeper and more rigorous level than onlevel classes Students will be exposed to broad-based problems integrated into the curriculum that use accumulated skills/concepts
Information to consider when choosing Pre AP Math Elementary students receive 50 minutes of math daily while in middle school we get 46 minutes of math daily (faster pace) Pre AP students will be required to create projects outside of school that require application of the knowledge and content taught in class every grading period Their CBA tests are more rigorous than on-level tests
Pre AP classes by grade level 6 th grade Pre AP covers all 6 th grade state standards, but on a deeper level with additional problem solving requirements (Major Grade) 7 th grade Pre AP covers all 7 th grade standards AND half of 8 th grade standards (in order to prepare students for Pre AP Algebra I) 8 th grade Pre AP covers 8 th grade standards in depth if students choose not to enroll in Pre AP Algebra I
Pre-AP Algebra I Enrollment currently requires successful completion of PAP Math 7, Math 8, Pre AP Math 8 or 80% or better on the 8 th Grade Exam for Acceleration for Math 7 students All PAP math 7 students will take the IAAT test at the end of 7 th grade to determine Algebra readiness Accelerates students by one grade level Counts as a high school math credit Grade will be part of high school GPA Students who should consider acceleration are: Self-motivated LOVE math and THINK mathematically Ready to commit to a course sequence beyond the four required credits leading to AP Calculus in high school. Want to pursue a career which requires a great deal of math Are willing to work hard mentally
