HS Cape Town Tour HS Indoor Sports Tournament CALENDAR TERM 4 NEWSLETTER / NUMBER 35 / 29 November 2013 FROM THE HEAD Dear Parents, Another week has literally blown past and the Festive Season is almost upon us. It was a wonderful evening of Christmas Carols and performances by our Junior School students last night and I would like to thank all of the parents for enjoying it with us. A big thank you to Miss Beauchamp for her hard work with the choir, Orff and class performances. Miss Muscat, thank you for the music, the songs you re singing, thanks for all the... accompaniment on the piano as well. Class teachers and assistants for individual class/group performances and all the work and preparation that entails. Roxy and the gymnasts and ballerinas and last but not least (Got it right this time!) Mrs Louw for pulling it all together into a wonderful event. Well done to all the students and we are really proud of you guys and girls. We welcomed some of our new students, who will be joining the Junior School in 2014, on Wednesday morning where they met their teachers and spent some time with their new classmates. I really enjoyed chatting to our new parents and I am certain that they will be very happy here and eager to join our Coffee Club next year. Please take some time over the holiday period to think about either volunteering to be a class representative or nominating somebody to represent you on the Parents Association/Coffee Club. It is crucial for a school to receive input from their parent body, if the aim truly is to improve the school and to develop the relationship between the school and the broader school community. Next week we are looking forward to a trip to Cape Town for the High School students as well as another indoor action sports competition. It promises to be very exciting. All High School parents should have received these letters via email, so if you have missed it please contact the office as closing dates for reply slips are coming soon and late replies will unfortunately mean students will miss the events. Congratulations to our Year 12 s that finished their exams today and we are all holding thumbs that the results will be excellent. Have a well deserved rest and for those travelling to the numerous post exam celebrations please be careful and look after yourselves. You will all be missed and hopefully we will see you soon. Have a lovely weekend. Mr Henk Weyers Principal Tel: 021 851 6290 - Fax: 086 565 5154 - E-ail: admission.helderberg@iesedu.com www.helderberg.iesedu.com

In the Year 4 Classroom The Year 4's are inquiring into how to make things move forward. The children worked in pairs. They tied one end of a piece of string to a chair and put the other end of the string through a straw. Then they pulled the string tight and connected it to another chair. Balloons were blown up and stuck onto the straw with tape. They let go of the balloon... and watched the rocket go! The children learnt that as the air rushed out of the balloon, it created a forward motion called thrust. Thrust is a pushing force created by energy. Written By: Ms H Beauchamp, Year 4 Teacher

HIGH SCHOOL Exams over for our Matrics! Our Matrics finished writing their exams today! We eagerly await their results that will be released towards the end of January. We encourage them to stay safe while they celebrate and wish them all the very best! Cape Town Tour: 9 December 2013 On Monday 9 December the High School are organising a trip to various places of historical and cultural interest in Cape Town city. We will be visiting the old Slave Lodge, which is now the South African Cultural History Museum. We will also go to the Bo-Kaap Museum, which showcases local Islamic culture and heritage, and the historic area called Bo-Kaap. If time allows, Mrs Leibbrandt will also take those who are interested to the Art Gallery. They will be travelling to Cape Town by train, and have booked their own coach together with a Metrorail chaperone. High School parents should have received an email with all the details and a reply slip that needs to be returned to the office by Tuesday the 3 rd of December. Bookings need to be made and if we do not receive the reply slip by the 3 rd of December, unfortunately your child will not be able to attend the outing. High School Indoor Sports Tournament: 6 December 2013 Due to popular demand we have been asked to organise another indoor sports competition for the high school students. This will take place on Friday the 6 th December for high school students (Year 7-12). The venue will remain the Somerset West Action Sports Centre. Unfortunately there will again be a cost involved, which is why participation is voluntary, but attendance is compulsory. Parents are of course welcome to support and watch. The students will compete in 6, randomly selected (by drawing names out of a hat, at the venue, on the day.), mixed teams. Teams will compete in soccer and netball throughout the day. All High School parents should have received an email with all the details yesterday. Reply-slips, along with the cash payment, will need to reach the school office by Wednesday the 4 th of December to finalise the booking. www.helderberg.iesedu.com
