Congratulations on your child's candidacy for graduation this May! This publication has been prepared for you in anticipation of the many questions you may have regarding graduation. We hope you will find it helpful and informative. Commencement Information Commencement will be held on Sunday, May 27 th at 11:00 a.m. at the BB&T Arena, 500 Nunn Drive, Highland Heights, Kentucky. Reporting time for seniors is 10:00 a.m. Line up must be complete by 10:30 a.m. Seniors should enter BB&T Arena by the Box Office Main Entrance. There is a drop off circle at the main entrance for your convenience. The ceremony will begin promptly at 11:00 a.m. and should last approximately 1-1/4 hours. The public will be admitted to BB&T Arena at 10:00 a.m. Adequate parking is available in the Welcome Center Parking Garage off University Drive. Additional parking is available in lot D behind the Welcome Center Parking Garage. There is a fee for parking payable upon arrival. BB&T Arena is accessible to the handicapped at the Box Office Main Entrance and from the Welcome Center Parking Garage. There will be adequate handicap seating. No reservation for handicap seating is necessary. Tickets are not necessary for admittance. The Commencement Ceremony: The Anderson High School Commencement is a ceremony, not a celebration, and will be conducted with dignity and respect. Graduates, parents and guests are reminded 2
that out of respect to other classmates, anything that distracts from the dignity of the ceremony will not be permitted. Since commencement is a formal ceremony involving as many as 300 students, certain standards have been established. Participation in the ceremony is optional. Graduates wishing to participate must adhere to the guidelines and rules established by the school. Commencement Speakers: Three student speakers will be selected. The speeches include a welcome to the assembly, a reflection over the past four years, and a glimpse into the future. Students who wish to be a commencement speaker must complete an application and audition before a faculty panel. The decision of the panel is final. Applications are available on the student Schoology page, Anderson In The Know. Graduation Announcements: Seniors who have ordered graduation announcements should expect to receive them in March. If you need extra announcements, visit the Graduate Services office on Main Street in Newtown (513-272-5890) http://www.graduateserviceinc.com. Commencement Attire : Students must wear a cap and gown as prescribed by the school. Required Dress for Boys: White dress shirt with collar, tie, dark slacks, dark socks and dark shoes. Jeans, shorts, tennis shoes or sandals are not permitted. 3
Required Dress for Girls: The dress worn beneath the gown should not exceed the hemline of the gown. Dress shoes with a low (or flat) heel are recommended for girls. All seniors will be given a commemorative medal to wear for commencement. Seniors graduating with Latin honors (Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude or Summa Cum Laude), will wear an honor cord presented at the Senior Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 23, 2018. Students in National Honor Society and Cum Laude Society may wear their pins on the left front of their graduation gown. Nothing else may be worn on the graduation gown (ex. corsages, necklaces, etc.) Caps and Gowns will be distributed on May 1st. Seniors should try on their cap and gown as soon as possible to be sure it fits. Students must wear their cap, tassel and rented gown from Graduate Services. If you have not placed your order, please contact Graduate Services at 272-5890 immediately. Commencement Rehearsal : Seniors participating in the commencement ceremony must attend the mandatory commencement rehearsal, scheduled for Thursday, May 24th, from 9:00 a.m. to approximately 11:00 a.m. in the school auditorium and gym. Students who do not attend rehearsal will NOT be permitted to walk in the ceremony. Graduation Requirements It is the student's responsibility to make sure all graduation and commencement requirements are met. In order to participate in commencement, seniors must be enrolled, be in attendance during the 2 nd semester of their senior year and must meet all graduation requirements. Early graduates must meet all graduation requirements, but are excused from the 2 nd semester attendance requirement. 4
Credit requirements for Anderson High School are as follows: English 4 credits, including English 12 Mathematics Science Social Studies Health/PE Electives Total Additional Requirements to Receive a Diploma 4 credits 3 credits 3 1/2 credits 1 credit 6 1/2 credits 22 credits All school fees must be paid, library materials must be returned, and all other school obligations taken care of no later than May 24th. Acceptable financial obligation payment includes online payment, cash, money order or check; however no checks will be accepted after May 4th. Meeting all the point requirements for End of Course (EOC) Exams and/or meeting the remediation free scores on the ACT or SAT. Final grade and credit information for all evening and correspondence classes taken to meet a graduation requirement must be received from the educational institution awarding the credit no later than May 4th, if the student is to participate in the commencement ceremony. Honors and Scholarship Publishing Deadline: The deadline for students and parents to submit honors and scholarship information for publishing in the commencement program is 2:30 p.m. on May 4th. Forms are available in the Student Services Center. Anderson High School 5
makes every effort to publish honors and scholarship information for graduates in the commencement program, however, due to a very strict timeline that allows for timely printing of the commencement program, the deadline for receiving honors and scholarship information is final. Parent Contact: Every attempt will be made to notify parents of seniors who have academic deficiencies and have not met graduation requirements. This is done no later than the end of the day on May 24th. While teachers are required to make telephone contact with parents if a senior is failing a course for the semester, it is the student's responsibility to make sure all graduation requirements are met and to inform parents if a problem exists. Students Not Meeting Graduation Requirements: Students who have not met all graduation requirements will not be allowed to participate in the commencement ceremony. Final Transcripts: In mid-may, all seniors will complete a Final Transcript Release Form that will indicate which college or university should receive their final high school transcript. A final transcript will also be mailed to seniors no later than the 3rd week of June. Seniors are asked to check this transcript carefully, and notify the school of any errors. Student Behavior Participation in the commencement ceremony is a privilege, not a right. Seniors who do not abide by the Student Code of Conduct jeopardize their chance to be a part of the ceremony. Any senior who disrupts or contributes in any way to the disruption of the normal school operation during the final months of school will be subject to disciplinary action. 6
This action may include, but will not be limited to, being denied participation in commencement. Please encourage your child to refrain from committing senior pranks and/or Code of Conduct violations.
