JUNIOR & SENIOR MEETING Welcome to the Junior and Senior Meeting! The purpose of this meeting is to guide you through the steps of graduating and preparing for life after high school. We plan to cover several topics with you in this presentation that will help you navigate the final two years of high school. We will also share resources to help guide you along as you transition to life after high school.
GRADUATION CHECK & TRANSCRIPTS Check for ACCURACY Note any discrepancies Discuss these with your counselor Are you in the classes needed to graduate? Did you repeat any classes? Make-up failed classes? Weighted G.P.A is used for class rank AND it is used by many colleges for admissions To request an official transcript see Mrs. Cobbs, counseling secretary. The first two requests are free and each copy thereafter is $1.00.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS 24 credits needed to graduate 4 credits of Language Arts (ELA) 3 credits of Science: Biology and 2 more 4 credits of Math: Algebra, Geometry, and 2 more 3 credits of Social Studies:.5 Government,.5 Economics, World History, US History 1 credit of Physical Education:.5 PE.5 Personal Fitness 8 electives to include: 1 Online Course and 1 Fine or Performing Arts State Assessments: ALG 1 EOC and FSA ELA Grade 10
PREPARING FOR THE NEXT STEP A few tips.. Plan ahead to avoid being overwhelmed. Stay on top of your grades. Pay close attention to deadlines. Research the schools you are interested in. Start planning for tomorrow TODAY. Juniors should have the ACT score and the GPA they want by the beginning of their senior year.
APPLYING TO COLLEGES Pick 3 to 5 schools that interest you. Get an application for admission from the school's website or office of admissions. Most applications are online. Complete and return the application with all necessary materials that must go with it. Request a copy of your official transcript. Have your transcript sent to the school. Get a housing application if you plan to live on campus. Find out what tests (ACT or SAT) are required and the deadlines for submitting your official scores report. If you have questions ask your parents, guidance counselor, or an admissions director.
THE COMMON APPLICATION If you plan to apply to several colleges, please consider using the common app. This is one application used for many schools. Apply at www.commonapp.org For a complete listing of schools that accept the common app visit this website.
COLLEGE VISITS These visits must be pre-approved by the principal. Juniors and Seniors can schedule up to 2 college campus visits. A request must be submitted three days in advance if you want school leave. Try to visit colleges when they are in session or during Open House or Preview Nights. On weekends, all you will see are empty buildings!
COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVE VISITS College Representatives also make visits to CHS. The reps are usually from the college admissions office. A list of colleges and the dates they are visiting can be found on the CHS website or in the guidance office. Sign up to visit with college reps BEFORE the day they are scheduled to visit. To sign up, see Mrs. Cobbs in the counseling office. BE SELECTIVE WHEN SIGNING UP!
ACT and SAT Register for the ACT at www.actstudent.org Register for the SAT at www.sat.org/register These websites are also useful for test preparation. Online registration is required. Check with your selected schools as to what tests are required for admission. If you plan to re-take the AC or SAT, register ASAP. Ask your counselor about a fee waiver if you have free or reduced lunch.
ACT PREPARATION Use the study guide from the ACT website. Check out an ACT prep book from the library. Register for the ACT Prep Tutoring Classes that are held at CHS before an ACT test date. Use the test prep section from act.org. More advanced test prep is offered through Kaplan. https://sat.collegeboard.org/home Study and Practice. Practice and Study.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION Some colleges require a counselor or teacher letter of recommendation. Letters of Recommendation require 2 weeks notice to counselor. Please provide your counselor with a Letter of Recommendation Request Form.

NCAA GUIDELINES If you hope to play college sports, you must meet NCAA academic eligibility requirements. Visit www.ncaa.org for more information and up-todate guidelines. NCAA will need an official copy of your transcript. To send a copy of your transcript to NCAA, see Mrs. Cobbs. Register with the Clearinghouse to begin the process.
SCHOLARSHIPS A list of current scholarships is provided on the CHS Guidance Website: www.chsbulldogs.org. Please let your counselor know if you want to be nominated for a certain scholarship. Now is the time to seek out scholarships. Look on the web, at your church, through community organizations, etc. Check with the colleges you are interested in for scholarships they offer as well.
FINANCIAL AID Now is the time to talk to your parents about financing your college education. Most colleges require the FAFSA. This is the FREE Application for Federal Student Aid Apply online for the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov FASFA NIGHT at CHS January 19 5:30pm Auditorium THE SOONER, THE BETTER. MORE $$ AVAILABLE. Remember: January 1, 2016 is the first day to apply.
CAREER & WORK FORCE STUDENTS Army Marine Corps Military Options Take the ASVAB Test in February. Navy (includes the Merchant Marine) Air Force Coast Guard Recruiters come to CHS. Check with Guidance or the local recruiting offices.
