The following is a letter from the Middle School Principals concerning our Middle School Spring Dance, Friday, March 31, 2017: March 10, 2017 Dear SAMS Parents/Guardians, We are pleased to announce our final dance of the 2016-2017 school year. The theme this spring will be "Neon Night!" This spring's theme was chosen as a result of input from our entire student body, gathered through the efforts of our middle school student council members. Our student council and activities office will be renting some strobe lights and black lights, which should make the evening a really "glowing" time for our students! Our "Neon Night!" dance will be held on Friday March 31, 2017 from 7:00-9:00 PM in our cafeteria. Tickets must be purchased in advance at our activities office and the price of admission will be $5.00 per person. Included in the cost of admission will be a piece of pizza. Some simple guidelines for our final dance are as follows: -Since "Neon Night!" is the theme, students are encouraged to wear neon colored, dress code appropriate clothing. Please do not feel compelled or pressured to venture to the store to buy any new neon colored clothing, as any bright colored clothing will work well with the lighting! We want this dance to be an enjoyable spring dance for our students, and we wish to keep things as simple as possible. -A reminder that students who wish to attend must adhere to our guidelines for "Dances", which can be found on page 8 of the 2016-2017 Shaler Area Middle School Student and Parent Handbook. Please note that to be eligible to attend: *Students must be in good standing academically and behaviorally (no school suspensions in the month preceding this dance) *Students must satisfy any library fines, cafeteria debts greater than $25, or any other financial obligations owed to the school. We look forward to seeing our students and staff wearing their "NEON" as we enjoy our final dance of the school year! Sincerely, Mr. Martynuska Principal Mrs. Howard Assistant Principal The Counseling Department will be holding a Diversity Day on March 28 th at our Middle School--- A building-wide assembly on the topic with an interactive presentation from Chaz Kellem- Chaz was Head of Diversity for the Pittsburgh Power Organization; and currently, he is working at the YWCA as the Senior

Director for Advocacy for Race and Gender Equity. These assemblies will occur during 2 nd (8 th grade) and 3 rd (7 th grade) periods. For this year s Diversity Day, we have 12 MS student leaders that have been training with us during 5 th and/or 6 th periods. HS YAL students will be co-facilitating discussion groups with our MS YAL students. Three students from the Creative and Performing Arts High School will perform monologues; Arts in Activism throughout History and Today. These presentations are designed to educate the audience on past movements for equality, and use this knowledge to create a conversation on how to create change. The performers will be using the theme of various art forms (performance, poetry, visual art) as a structure, introducing Artists that impacted activism movements, and how individuals can access the arts to create change in the world. The objective of the presentation is to inspire students to become aware of injustice and what tools a person could use to illicit change, on both a small and large scale. We are seeking students to participate in the CAPA performances and group discussions that will follow the performances. Invitations will be distributed this week! If you have been chosen & receive an invitation, you will be required to have it signed by a parent/guardian. If you d like to be a part of the Diversity Group Discussions and have not received an invite, please see your school counselor. The slips are due by March 24-this Friday!! During 6 th period lunches in the cafeteria on Thursday and Friday of this week, there will be a fundraiser to raise awareness of the dangers and victims of school shootings. For our Art for a Change project, we have designed a tree in the memory of victims who have died in school shooting incidents. You can donate $1.00 to write your name on the tree, and in return, receive a lollipop for your generous donation. All money raised will be donated to the Sandy Hook Promise organization. Please Donate! To learn more about the organization go to www.sandyhookpromise.com. Today during 6 th period lunch, students will be selling cookies. All funds received will be donated to the Clear Water Marine Aquarium to help save ocean wildlife. Be a part of this change, and enjoy our delicious seaanimal shaped cookies!
