JAN 2017 FROM THE SUMMARY PRINCIPAL S DESK ACHIEVEMENTS CLASSROOM NEWS Sankranti Celebration Novel Culmination Day CCA Competition Talk on Animal Awareness Orchids Premier League Republic Day PARENTS TEACHER S MEET IIT PTM CREATIVE CORNER PRE-PRIMARY NEWS PARENT S WRITE-UP TEACHER S WRITE-UP Education is not merely acquirement of facts but also of values which help us improve the different facets of mankind. It ensures that we leave the world a far better place than we found it. A pivotal role of education lies in shaping the personality of a child into a healthy mind and happy soul, who is not only equipped with 21st century skills and aptitude required for academic excellence but helping him face the challenges of life in a balanced and harmonious way. In this pursuit of excellence, I appreciate our parent fraternity for supporting the school in every aspect. I also laud the relentless efforts of our teachers for giving their best in bringing out the best in each child. By Principal Ms.Anjala Sharma

ACHIEVEMENTS The abacus is a calculating tool that was in use in Europe, China and Russia. RAKSHIT KUMAR KURKI has participated in the PRODIGY PLUS - Regional competition Karnataka held on 26th Jan 2017 and achieved the "Super Champ" award. CLASSROOM NEWS Sankranti Celebration Orchids- The International school, Mysore Road celebrated Sankranti festival on 13 th January,2017. We decorated our assembly area with sugarcane, earthen pot and flowers. Children of Grade-2 participated in a group dance. Significance of the day was given by grade 7 students. Everyone participated and enjoyed the celebration.

NOVEL CULMINATION DAY Orchids, academic team has worked on a structured plan for novel reading, a plan that includes Blooms Taxonomy, of learning. It included posters, prediction charts, sketches, models, broachers, speeches and role-plays. It was the 7th of January 2017, the school resembled a colourful fictional world. The classrooms and stage for the roleplays were decorated as per the novel s theme and setting. The props were an eye-catching display. The show by grade 1 to 8 began with a note of welcome, genre of the novel, note about the author, prediction (a question to parents), summary of the novel, roleplays, a video presentation, parent s activity and vote of thanks. Students performance were greatly appreciated, treasured and encouraged for further activities. Parents found this day a memorable one as they felt their children are exposed to a variety of activities to develop the interest in reading books.

CCA COMPETITION Creative writing is that form of writing which expresses ideas and thoughts in an imaginative way. The writer gets to express feelings and emotions instead of just presenting the facts. We at Orchids International school organized a few competitions for little orchidians, to showcase their writing skills and express their thoughts as a part of CCA program. The following competitions were organised: Grade1-2: Picture Writing; Grade 3-5: Creative Writing & Grade 6-9: Imaginative Writing. Children were asked to write on a topic given. They enthusiastically participated in the competition and explored their imaginative skills.

TALK ON ANIMAL AWARENESS People For Animals (PFA), Bangalore, is a non-profit conservation organization working on the rescue and rehabilitation of urban wildlife. PFA was launched in 1996, by Namrata Durga, Alpana Bhartia, Gauri Maini and Arushi Poddar. On 19 th January 2017 volunteers from the organization visited our school to create an awareness on animal protection. Children interacted with volunteers and learnt to protect the animals. They also vowed to show care and love to the animals.

ORCHIDS PREMIERE LEAGUE (OPL)

REPUBLIC DAY As Independence Day is celebrated to enjoy the freedom of our country from British rule, Republic day is celebrated to commemorate the coming of its own constitution into force. On 26 th Jan 2017, India celebrated 68 th Republic day celebration in our school campus. Our Principal, Mrs. Anjala A Sharma as the guest of honour hoisted the flag. Owing respect to the great freedom fighters of our country, we inaugurated the ceremony of our Orchids School Premier League (OPL), interbranch Basketball Tournament.

PARENTS TEACHER S MEET IIT PTM It is a new approach started by school where our orchidians are exposed to the competitive examinations. It is a foundation for strong personality in our students enhancing their subject knowledge and thinking abilities. Parents have a concern about the new technique of teaching are introduced to students and how their rewards are benefited. This program is a milestone in the history of Orchids.

CREATIVE CORNER

PRE-PRIMARY NEWS VISIT OF A SPORT S PERSON Sport and physical education is fundamental to the early development of children and youth and the skills learned during play. Physical education and sport contribute to the holistic development of young people. Through participation in sports, young people learn about the importance of key values such as honesty, teamwork, respect, etc., Learning deep about the theme Sports as a part of curriculum also helps a child to bring out their innate interest for sports. To reinforce the concept learnt into their tender minds, Orchids The International School, Mysore Road had arranged for a VISIT OF A SPORTS PERSON for K1 and K2. On this day a sports person by name Ms. Maria Beulla, addressed our tiny toddlers and answered all their queries.

LIFESTYLE EVENT India consists of diverse ethnic races and groups and each of them strictly adhere to their own set of customs and tradition, yet there are different lifestyle patterns followed by almost all the Indians. This, despite the fact that there is so much variation in their language, food habits, dressing style and custom. The lifestyles in India has been divided mainly into three categories as; Tribal, Rural and Urban Lifestyle. Though we belong to urban community, its important to expose our children to the other two communities too, to bridge the gap and bring oneness in them and proudly say WE ARE INDIANS. To achieve this Orchids International School, Mysore Road had organized A LIFESTYLE EVENT where children showcased their knowledge on different communities being dressed up in the respective lifestyle.

PURPLE DAY The ability to identify colours is considered a marker & milestone in a child s cognitive process & is often a part of early screening for development & admittance. As a part of the curriculum, K1 children were introduced to Purple colour. Purple is the favourite colour of most people. It s nature s colour and one of the colour in rainbow. Children came dressed in different shades of Purple colour and the classrooms were well decorated with Purple streamers and Purple balloons by the teachers. Children were shown different types of Purple colour objects and they did a model of Purple grapes with crepe paper crumpling activity.

PARENT S WRITE-UP

TEACHER S WRITE-UP This is my 10 th year in teaching field but working in an International School is my first experience. I am gaining a different experience to improve my career. Orchids, is growing to be in par of reputed international school in Bangalore. Digitalized class room, organized curriculum, well-qualified teachers are the special features of this school. Now, the management is providing IIT coaching to the youngminds to fulfill their dream gateway to IIT. Even though we have a systematic organized curriculum, we need to put in sufficient efforts to achieve the desired standard. To improve the quality mode of the subject Science, we group the children according to specific categories providing special care & extra coaching for students who are weak in the subject. I feel proud to be an orchidian. As the school grows it enhances my learning too. Preetha Kumari, Secondary Teacher As a staff of Orchids completing my 3 years, I feel proud to be a part of it. It is a great learning and self-realization experience in the school. Teachers are benefited by the teaching program, exposure to various areas and as teachers we also learn more with students. This curriculum has enhanced my knowledge and brought out the best of my abilities. Working in orchids has made excel with my potentials and strong foundation for my upcoming career. Rajalakshmi,, Secondary Teacher Our life is a reflection of our attitude. Without even noticing it, it can be easy to become negative and cynical towards the world as we are continuously exposed to tragedy and injustice in the media and as we experience our own heartache and distress. Not only is a negative attitude preventing you from fully enjoying your life, it can have a significant impact on your environment. The energy a person brings with them is contagious. One of the best things you can offer your family, organization or community is your positive attitude. In the wise words of Michael Jackson, If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change. As creatures of habit, by making small adjustments to your daily life and mindset, positive habits can be formed to make yourself and everyone you interact with happier. Nruthya, Primary Teacher
