OFFICE OF ORIENTATION & TRANSITION PROGRAMS 2018 ORIENTATION LEADER Thank you for your interest in the Orientation Leader position. We are excited to begin the selection of our team. Collectively, Orientation Leaders are responsible for introducing the University of North Texas to more than 8,000 new students along with over 2,000 parents and family members. Please carefully read the entire packet and follow all directions. HOW WILL THE ORIENTATION PROGRAM BENEFIT ME AS A STUDENT AT UNT? Making connections throughout the university is critical for your success as a student. As an Orientation Leader, you will have the opportunity to make and enhance connections with faculty, staff and a variety of students from the UNT community. In addition, you benefit from learning detailed information about university programs and services, which increases your campus knowledge. The student leader position is an integral part of the Orientation program. Orientation Leaders hold a prestigious leadership role on campus, and often use their experience as a stepping-stone to employment in other leadership positions. HOW WILL THE ORIENTATION PROGRAM BENEFIT ME AFTER GRADUATION? These positions are designed to increase your leadership skills and abilities. Orientation Leaders develop skills in group problem solving, conflict resolution, interpersonal communication and team building. The Orientation experience also provides students with the opportunity to interact with a diverse population of students, fostering skills important for future employment. Throughout the program, you will have opportunities to use these skills in hands-on situations, thus providing an experience upon which employers look favorably. RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS Orientation Leader positions are exceptionally rewarding and highly competitive. Please read the information below to determine if you meet, and will be able to complete, all the requirements of the position. RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS: Orientation Leader (OL): The responsibilities of an Orientation Leader Tasks range from providing technical assistance on the myunt website to comforting a student who feels homesick or providing assistance during orientation programs to answering general questions about UNT for parents of incoming freshman and transfer students. Orientation Leaders must be flexible, perceptive, willing to take initiative, empathetic, and team-orientated. The responsibilities of an Orientation Leader include, but are not limited to: Welcome new students, parents, and family members to the University Conduct small group meetings on topics such as the Academic Guidebook, transitional issues and campus resources, and the registration process Assisting with the check-in and registration process of Student & Parent & Family Orientation participants Provide logistical support to presenters during Orientation programs Answering students and parents questions regarding transitional issues, campus resources, and the registration process Assist academic advisors and campus department presenters during their presentations Providing information and assisting students in the registration process Moving and lifting orientation materials and preparing orientation bags Provide information and assisting students in the registration process Help to lead all attendees in the Fight Song and Alma Mater Give a dramatic performance in front of a large audience (Life on Campus presentation) Place phone calls to students admitted to UNT but have not signed up for an orientation session Working strenuous, irregular hours LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: Attend NODA Texas Drive-in conference April 7 (Tentative) Represent the office of Orientation and Transition Programs at official university events Volunteer to assist with official office functions and programs Participation in official team functions (receptions, banquets, photo shoots, etc.) ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Orientation Team Members must maintain a 2.5 cumulative grade point average throughout employment Good academic and disciplinary standing with the University throughout employment Successful completion of a background check Undergraduate student Enrolled on the UNT Denton campus during Spring and Fall 2018 IDEAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Be an excellent team player and representative of UNT Be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and high profile position Possess a commitment to diversity Maintain a high energy level, enthusiasm, and stamina when working long days Be an effective and clear communicator with new students and family members Be comfortable facilitating small and large group discussions and activities Possess a high level of maturity and an ability to use independent judgment in decision making Desire to make a difference in the lives of first year students, transfer students, and their families Enjoy hard, but rewarding work Be willing to learn and grow through the position Be an effective and positive role model for other students on campus 2

TIME COMMITMENT: Orientation Leaders are required to participate in the following activities (see attached list for specific dates): On-going leadership training - spring & summer 2018 Freshman & Transfer Orientation Prep Work Freshman & Transfer Orientations First Flight Programs Additional OTP office programming ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Orientation Leaders are required to submit in writing prior to hire any events that may conflict with the Orientation time commitments listed herein. For example, we might be able to work with you on attending Cousin Bob s wedding or the Smith Family Reunion. These dates, however, must be included in your completed application packet. Make-up hours are required for every absence. COMPENSATION: Orientation Leaders Summer Stipend (approximately $2500 before taxes) o Stipend will be divided and paid monthly July, August, and September Room & Board from late May to early August (approximately $2300) Staff Apparel & Staff Supplies Meals are provided during training and orientation sessions APPLICATION PROCESS: 1. Students must complete an online application through the Career Center. Log on to https://unt.joinhandshake.com/ and search for job posting #1217680for the Orientation Leader position. 2. Students need to complete the attached application packet. Completed application packets must be submitted no later than 5:00 PM, February 8, 2018. All forms are to be returned to the office of Orientation and Transition Programs, University Union, Suite 377. All Dates Subject to Change without Notice. INTERVIEW PROCESS: Group Interviews All candidates who meet the minimum position qualifications will be invited to group interview. Applicants should sign up for a group interview when they submit their official application to the office of Orientation and Transition Programs (Union 377). The group interview will consist of different activities designed to see how applicants work in a group setting. After the group interviews, candidates will receive a letter indicating their status in the interview process. In the interviews, be yourself! Don t assume that the judges and staff are only looking for a certain type of person to make up the orientation team. Be you and not who you think the judges want to see! Ultimately, the staff is looking for students who are passionate about UNT and want to share that passion with incoming freshmen, transfer students, and parents. The recommended attire for the interview process is Business Casual. 3

TIME COMMITMENTS Orientation Leader Meetings: All Orientation Leaders are required to attend all Orientation Leader Meetings. Team meetings will be held weekly during the spring semester on Friday afternoons. A complete schedule is outlined in this application. 2-week Summer Training: In-depth leadership training will occur prior to the first New Student Orientation session. Leaders will be trained on a variety of subjects, including campus policies, academic advising, facilitating small groups, presentation skills and much more. Training is mandatory for all new and returning staff. Staff members are required to attend all Orientation training sessions. Orientation Sessions: Orientation Leaders must be present at all Freshman Orientation sessions. Orientation Leaders are required to work 5 Transfer Orientation sessions. A schedule will be established for Transfer Orientation sessions prior to the start of the summer orientation season. After bed checks during orientation, you are not on call. Additional OTP Programming: All Orientation Leaders are required to attend all office of Orientation and Transition Programs-sponsored First Flight Activities and must participate in additional events including but not limited to: Senior Day, Spanish Family Orientation, Eagle Experience, Eagle for a Day, Frisco Orientation Sessions, Graduate Orientation Sessions, and Send-off Parties. 4
