Givens, Assistant Principal www.cssd.ab.ca/msgrobrien May 2018 Dear Parents/Guardians: We welcome the month of May with open arms to spring, green grass, warmer weather, and especially to the Mother Mary, who we celebrate this month. Mothers play a crucial role in our lives and May is the month to be particularly thankful for blessings from our mothers in our life. Please join us for our Marian Mass on Thursday, May 10 @9:00am. with Father Andrew. We are looking forward to School Council s Family Dance on May 4, when families can come together and celebrate through dance and fellowship. Students are getting excited and looking forward to the cake walk traditional game that is hosted. It should prove to be a fun-filled evening. We hope you can join us. A big thank you to parents who have supported student learning by supervising on field trips this year and also to those who will be helping out with upcoming trips. We can t go on field trips without your support, and we really appreciate the time and commitment you make to enhance students learning. Please remember to complete a Volunteer Orientation prior to the field trip. We are well into the planning stages for next school year. Since much of the planning is based on enrollment, we need to project our student numbers as accurately as possible. If you are planning to withdraw your child from Monsignor J.J. O Brien and have not yet informed us, please do so as soon as possible. Tod Desautels Tony Makowski Louise Givens Principal Vice-Principal Assistant-Principal

LUNCH TIME REMINDER Students are reminded to bring their own cutlery for their lunch. The concession is not able to provide spoons or forks to students. HEALTHY EATING AND BIRTHDAYS CHARTER TRANSPORTATION 2018-2019 Birthdays are an exciting day for children and they often want to share their birthday celebrations with classmates. Although teachers recognize birthdays in different ways within the class, they are often asked by parents to distribute treats, cupcakes, etc. as part of a birthday celebration for their child. As well as concerns about nutrition, often not all children are able to participate due to allergies, medical conditions etc., therefore we are asking parents not to send in birthday treats and to celebrate birthdays at home or another location. Students in grades 1-6 are eligible to use charter bus service if their parents or legal guardians reside further than 1.2 km from the school. Parents must complete a Transportation Registration for each year for each child who requires transportation. Parents can register for their child s 2018-2019 transportation online (preferred method). To do this parents go to www.cssd.ab.ca and click on ONLINE FEE PAYMENT. Please note that fee payments will not be made at the time of registration. Parents will be asked to pay for transportation starting October 2018. Letters to pre-register for next year were sent home with students on April 30 th. ELEMENTARY (GR. 1 6) SCHOOL SUPPLIES 2018-2019 For your convenience we will again be using the services of Custom School Supplies, to provide our students with necessary, good quality supplies, for the next school year. These are supplies that have been requested by the grade level teachers, so you can be assured that these items are the right brand, type, quantity and even color. We are confident that the pricing is competitive. We believe that your order will ensure that the teachers and students will work with supplies that meet everyone s expectations and save your time. Custom School Supplies order forms will be sent home soon, so keep a look out in your child s agenda! Supplies will be delivered to the school during the summer break and will be waiting in the classroom for your child upon starting back to school in September.
GRADE 9 FAREWELL JUNE 15TH June will be here soon and we are busy planning the Grade 9 Farewell. As a staff we hope to make this a meaningful celebration for your child. We remind students that this is not a graduation but rather a farewell from elementary and junior high school. Msgr. J. J. O Brien will be hosting a Farewell Liturgy at 5:00 p.m. at St. Patrick s Church for students, staff, family and friends. SACRAMENTAL BREAKFAST Our Sacramental Breakfast will be held on Thursday, June 8th by invitation only. Monsignor J. J. O Brien School encourages all students K-9 of this school year to be recognized for their significant milestone in their faith journey. A sacrament notice will be sent home for parents to respond to the Sacrament(s) that their child/children have received for the 2017-2018 school year. Parents, please ensure notices are returned to the classroom teacher with student s name and teacher/grade on the return form so no student is missed. Invitations to the Sacramental Breakfast will follow upon return of the sacrament form. Happy Spring Everyone! FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE MAY & JUNE 2018 Spring tends to be a busy time of year in general, and for students, it is a time of academic exams and the preparation that goes along with such events. Students are encouraged to manage their time and activities to make exam preparation a priority. The basics such as a good night s sleep and a good breakfast on exam day can really help students focus and do the best they can. If possible, please use the exam chart to plan appointments or other times when your child may not be at school. *All students are permitted an additional hour to complete a provincial achievement test. 9:00-11:00 a.m. Grade 9 English LA Part A Tuesday, May 9 th 9:00 11:00 a.m. Grade 6 English LA Part A Thursday, May 11 th Grade 8 District Religion Exam Tuesday, May 29th Grade 5 District Religion Exam Wednesday, May 30 th Grade 6 Science Friday June 15 th Grade 6 Math Monday, June 18 th Grade 6 LA Tuesday, June 19 th Grade 6 Social Wednesday, June 20 th Grade 7, 8, 9 Science Friday, June 22nd Grade 7, 8, 9 Math Monday, June 25 th Grade 7,8, 9 Social Tuesday, June 27 th Grade 7, 8,9 LA Part B Tuesday, June 26 th Grade 7, 8, 9 Social Wednesday, June 27th
