United Board Fellows Program 2019-2020 Program Guidelines Introduction The United Board Fellows Program aims to develop higher education leaders in Asia who are committed to advancing whole person education. It provides opportunities for mid-career faculty and administrators to be exposed to leadership concepts and practices from outside their own context, and it prepares them for future leadership roles within their home institutions in Asia. After acquiring vital new skills, ideas, and perspectives during the program, Fellows return home ready to undertake new initiatives and are often promoted to positions with greater responsibility. Since 2002, more than 250 Fellows from over 50 universities and colleges in 11 countries and regions of Asia have been selected for this program. This one-year experience features three components: an intensive three-week summer institute at a leading higher education institution in the United States.; a semester-long placement at an established Asia-Pacific college or university; and a summative reflective seminar in a major Asian city. Program Length: The 2019-2020 program will be held from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020. (Note that Fellows will be back at their home institutions between each component.) U.S. Summer Institute: The 2019-2020 cohort will attend an intensive summer institute on higher education leadership at a leading institution in the United States. The institute will offer a variety of workshops on leadership development, higher education management, and relevant topics to broaden fellows perspectives on today s higher education. Targeted site visits to select American colleges and universities are incorporated into the summer institute, allowing participants to observe and engage with leaders at the forefront of higher education innovation. Each participant will work on a case study as a knowledge product of their leadership reflection. Previous Summer Institutes have been hosted at Boston College (2016-2017) and Harvard University (2017-2018 and 2018-2019). Asia Placement: During the one year period, Fellows will spend two to four months at a host university in the Asia-Pacific region to observe leadership concepts and practices. This important component allows Fellows an immersion experience within which to observe, reflect, and grow. While in residence, each Fellow will meet regularly with a

host institution mentor who will provide leadership guidance, arrange and suggest activities, and provide feedback on the Fellow s progress. Leadership Seminar: Fellows will convene for a summative conference in a major city in Asia, where all cohort participants will reflect and share ideas on implementing and contextualizing learned concepts at their home institutions. The most recent three seminars have been held in Manila, Singapore, and Bangkok. Eligibility Successful applicants will demonstrate the following traits or accomplishments: A full-time position at a college or university in the United Board network (Please see the list on page 4). Demonstrated leadership within their home institutions, with the potential to assume larger roles and responsibilities. Preference will be given to those with substantial administrative experience. The commitment to return to their home institutions after the completion of the program. Recognized as being thoughtful, respected, engaged, and dedicated to making changes within their home institution or larger communities. Fluent in written and spoken English. Under 45 years old by the time of application. A doctoral-level or terminal degree preferred. * Please note: Former Fellows are not eligible to reapply for the Program; however, we welcome your recommendations for candidates. Application Requirements 1. Nomination form from the head of institution or senior administrator 2. Application form 3. Curriculum vitae (CV) Additional Guidelines The deadline to submit the nomination form from senior administrators or heads of institutions is September 30, 2018. Upon receiving all nominations, United Board staff will evaluate institutional eligibility and invite qualified candidates for application. All applications must be submitted by October 31, 2018. The application process is highly selective, and we encourage nominations to be submitted as early as possible to allow sufficient time for candidates to prepare their applications.
