What we have learned about 6 th grade students: 6 th graders come to middle school with varied skills to manage a more mature learning environment (they are learning A LOT about how to just be a middle school student) This factor can put pressure on 11 & 12 year-old students that isn t necessary to grow, learn and thrive in a new school, social and emotional environment Many students are advanced readers, but not as many are advanced writers It is important to see classroom and day to day performance in language arts to determine the needs for an accelerated student Middle Schools in the district are recognizing the need for differentiating in the classroom instead of a leveled class for LA Our school will utilize the Knight Time schedule which is more interest-based, GT goal-based and needs-based (reading, writing or both) 12

How we will adjust instruction to meet student needs: Ability grouping Independent reading goals in suitable range Newsela, nonficton reading goals (select appropriately challenging lexile range) Writing extensions within units of study Self-selected book groups with self-selected activities Passion projects Varied writing prompts and challenge vocabulary work 1 3
