HPHS News WE NOT ME A Kansas Basketball Story. A documentary film by Adrian Herrera HP graduate and college student completing his masters at Pittsburg State University. We Not Me is a portrait of one of the best high school basketball programs in the state of Kansas, the Highland Park Scots, and of a legendary head coach, Ken Darting. For over a decade, with an uncompromising and demanding style of coaching, Coach D has helped shaped and change the lives of his inner-city players who come from the roughest area of the capital city in Topeka, KS. Check out the trailer at: http://www.a1productions.tv/ Congratulations to Senior Latasha Evans for her Superior rating at the State Solo and Ensemble Festival! It was a wonderfully musical performance. She scored a 76 points out of a possible 80 points. The 100th celebration will kick off at the graduation ceremony on May 14, 2016 at the Expocentre at 1:30 p.m. The students will wear commemorative white gowns and medallions. The commemorative medallions will be sold for $10 each at the school and can be used as keychains too. Principal Dr. New was featured in the Topeka-Capital Journal on January 15, 2016 addressed King s comments. character, not skin color In his landmark I Have a Dream Speech from August 1963 in Washington, D.C., the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. challenged people to move beyond viewing others based on outward appearance and instead to look much deeper into what lies inside a person. I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character, King said. When we try to evaluate a person based on what we see on the outside, we have to question our judgment, New said. It doesn t make a lot of sense for people to make conclusions about others based on the color of their skin, when about 99.9 percent of our makeup is identical. In her speech Monday night, New said, I m going to do my best to encourage our fellow citizens to do what Dr. King advocated, which is to look at the character of a person rather than the color of their skin. Every year HP celebrates Arts in the Park for the school and community.
