Oak Ridge High School Class of 2019 3/9/2018 Spring Junior Class Presentation College and Career Center

Junior Year Timeline for College & Career All Year Take rigorous classes and do your best! Research colleges. You get 2 College Visit days this year. Attempt to narrow your list of schools to about 5 by the end of the summer. Work on your resume in Naviance. Attend College and Career Center events. Spring Make an appointment with your Grade Level Counselor to review your transcript and make sure you are on track for graduation. Spring Choose courses for your senior year wisely. Continue to take strong, rigorous courses. Take your SAT and/or ACT (more information on following slides). Consider completing a summer enrichment program Register with NCAA Eligibility Center if you plan on pursuing sports in college. Talk to Mrs. Prejean for more information.

PSAT www.collegeboard.org You will never take the PSAT again. YAY! Colleges do not care about your PSAT scores (unless you are a National Merit Scholar). These scores do NOT affect your college admissions. This test can qualify you for National Merit status based on your score. You will be notified by the National Merit Scholarship Program if you qualify. You should have been able to access your scores via your College Board account. If you have not done this, let me know.

SAT and ACT The SAT and ACT are college admissions tests. If you plan on attending a four-year university, you need to take one or both of these tests. Register to take one or both of these tests NOW. I highly recommend taking the tests WITH the writing/essay portions! Check what each university requires for admissions on the university s admissions website. Ms. Gibson and Mrs. Houston are both happy to help you find this information. ORHS School Code: 441473

SAT www.collegeboard.org College entrance exam for 4-year universities 3 sections plus the optional Essay (Reading, Writing & Language, Math) Scored on a 1600 point scale (each subtest can total 800) Essay scored separately and does not factor into composite score ACT www.actstudent.org College entrance exam for 4-year universities 4 sections plus the optional writing (English, Math, Reading, Science) Scored on a 36 point scale (each subtest and the composite)

ORHS Library Website. The password is Lonestar.

General Tips for SAT/ACT No penalty for guessing on either test Use your LEGAL name when registering for the SAT/ACT Example: Your legal name is Nathaniel Jones, but you registered for the SAT/ACT using Nate Jones. This will delay the process of colleges being able to match your scores to your application. Take advantage of the 4 free score reports when registering for the tests Colleges will use the score that benefits you the most for both admissions and scholarships. If you choose not to use the free score reports, it will cost you approximately $12 per score report per college during your senior year. For many schools, it s almost too late to test in the fall of the senior year for the first time. You can test again for the second (or third, etc.) time in the fall. Keep your log in information for both accounts somewhere safe you will need to access them frequently during your senior year. The College and Career Center does not have access to your SAT/ACT account information. If you forget your username and/or password, you must contact those institutions directly.

What scores do I need to be admitted to a 4-year Texas public university? There is no magic cut-off score to be guaranteed admission to every university. Each university sets their own admissions standards. Texas Public Universities must admit Top 10% of graduating class no matter what the student s SAT/ACT scores are UT Austin only has to accept Top 6% This does not guarantee you to get the major of your choice.

For Texas public universities, the test score needed is based on what quarter you fall within your graduating class. Class Rank 377 Total Number of Students: 966 Percentile: (377/966) x 100 = 39% This would put you in the 2 nd quarter. Meeting these test score requirements would assure admission into that university

What scores do I need to be admitted to a private 4-year university? Private Universities Holistic review meaning there is not a set SAT or ACT score that will guarantee admission Look at the entire application Will typically publish a Freshman Profile giving averages of GPA and SAT/ACT scores of accepted students Example: Baylor University Fall 2017: 75% of the entering freshman class were in the top quartile of their graduating class Median ACT Score for accepted freshmen: 26-31 Median SAT Score for accepted freshmen: 1200-1350 Example: Rice University Fall 2017: Admitted 16% of applicants Median SAT Scores: 700-800 on subtests Median ACT Scores: 33-35 Example: Princeton University Fall 2017: Admitted 6.4% of applicants Median SAT Scores: 700-800 on subtests Median ACT Scores: 31-35

What scores do I need to be admitted to an Out of State 4-year public university? Out of State Public University Examples LSU Assured Admissions 3.00 GPA 22 ACT (19 Math; 18 English) 1100 SAT (500 Math; 25 Writing and Language) Mississippi State University Assured Admissions 2.50 GPA 20 ACT 940 SAT (old SAT must use SAT Score Converter)

Do my SAT/ACT scores matter for scholarships? YES!!! Most every university offers merit based scholarships. Examples: The University of Alabama Can earn full tuition scholarship with the following scores: 32-36 ACT 1450-1600 SAT 3.5 GPA SFA Academic Excellence Scholarship Program Top 10%or 1170 SAT or 24 ACT University of Houston Academic Excellence Scholarship 1200 SAT or 25 ACT and Top 20% Outside Scholarships Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Metropolitan Scholarship 950 SAT or 19 ACT and Top 25% You can t apply for this yet only SENIORS.
