March/April 2018 Penns Woods Painters Brushstrokes www.pennswoodspainters.wordpress.com Acrylic Pouring Want to add color and flow to your life? Join us for a fun evening experimenting with acrylic pouring. Acrylic pouring gives you a special effects abstract background which you will be able to leave as is or add your own embellishments/design. If you would like to learn a little about acrylic pouring prior to the meeting there are many you tube videos and facebook groups that show the different types of pouring. Joyce Gutierrez will be giving us some guidance for our first acrylic pour. We will need to make sure we have enough tables set up. We will be meeting in the Messiah Community Room. 1

Presidents Message Hello Members To get motivated to write my article, I decided to look at the newsletter from March 2013. WOW! Many pictures within the newsletter of ladies who we haven t seen in a few years. Does anyone see Rose Bellavia or Mary Ann Couch? What about Vickie Gieman or Wendy Beckmann? Why not invite them to join our chapter again? Or bring them as a guest to the March program! It would be very nice to see some of our old members. I also read in the newsletter that Elaine Moran had just joined our chapter in 2013. Elaine lead our program in January 2018 and what a great project! Thank you, Elaine for joining our chapter 5 years ago and sharing your talent with us in January. Thank you to Judy Vetock and Carol Henry for a very nice Memory Box program in February. We had a lot of fun and the lunch was wonderful. Remember to varnish your box and return at the March general membership meeting. Have you heard of dirty pour? Come to the March evening meeting and check it out. More information within the newsletter. I understand that the Society will be mailing blank membership cards to me as president of the chapter. Once I receive the cards, I have the responsibility of dispersing the cards to each member. I have not figured out how I am to print the membership cards but will do my best once they arrive. We have a seminar scheduled with Sandy McTier in just two months, April 20-22. Unfortunately, the attendance is very low and the seminar is in danger of being cancelled. Please look for Joyce Gutierrez article and let her now immediately if you plan on attending any day of the seminar. We also have Brenda Stewart scheduled for July 20-22 and information about this seminar is also in this newsletter. In closing, the board finalized our move back to Messiah Village last night at the Board Meeting. The storage cabinets have been removed from the Sertoma Club and now in my garage. I will bring the necessary supplies to each meeting. Please remember that what we carry in each meeting now needs to be carried out after the meeting is over! Please only bring Memory Boxes and Treasurer Boxes to general meetings not Paint-Ins or Seminars. The chairperson for these committees is not always at the extra events. Happy Painting! Linda Kapp 2

Member spotlight Lois Eckert 10 I didn t start out in an art or decorative painting direction. In 1957 I graduated from Harrisburg Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing. I worked in the Pediatric field for a little over a year. After getting married and having 3 daughters; my job description changed - to Mom. A few years after our daughters were born, we added our son to the family. I starting taking classes in ceramics. Before long, I found that I was teaching lessons in ceramics. My studio shop was in the basement of our home. With the help of my husband, we cast many of the items that I used when teaching. We had about 600 molds that we cast. I fired 2 kilns almost daily. Gradually, working with wood from our shop in 1970s &1980s; I started teaching decoupage and decorative painting. I traveled to several shops In our area, Lewistown, and a few shops in Maryland. I ve also done several demos and talks on brushes and decorating wood to some woodworkers groups. We, my husband, ralph, and I supplied several shops with many wood items to be decorated. I was a founding member of Keystone Painters, which is no longer around. This chapter met in York, PA. I am a charter member of Penn s Woods Painters. I became a very active member around 2000. Prior to that time I helped to paint the mural at Siedle Hospital, and also worked on the canvas that was painted around the nurse s station. Being active in PWP has been quite an experience. I ve served on many committees and taught several paint-ins. I felt that it was quite an honor to be asked to teach at our 25th anniversary. I have taken classes from many Big Brushes (as we fondly call those experts who share their knowledge) I have attended several SDP Conventions and also many HOOT conventions. I look forward to painting and spending time with Penn s Woods Painters members. I have much more to learn and even some things that I want to share. I really enjoy painting. I have donated to several silent auctions to help some foundations. That gives me reasons to continue painting.
