From the Desk of the City Manager Bi Monthly Newsletter Keeping you informed Small City with Big Appeal Honoring Our Past with a Vision for the Future Brett McGuire. I think that we can all tell by the flashing lights in the school zones that school is back in session for the year. Most school districts returned back in session on Monday August 24 th. Please remember to slow down in the school zones, watch out for the little ones that might dart into the street and that talking or texting in a school zone is a violation. Let s all do our part to not have any accidents in a school zone this year. If schools are back in session then that means that Fall is just around the corner for us. It may not seem like it right now but cooler weather will be here before we know it. This is the time of year when we make the transition from our summertime activities into our normal routine. If you re a hunter then you are anticipating the start of the various hunting seasons and have already begun preparation and planning. If you have kids in sports then you re already having to work around practices, plan for out of town games and have had to buy new shoes and gear. Fall usually signals a change in our family/home routines and means that before we know it the holidays will be upon us. This past summer had been busy for your City staff. We have completed several road/ street projects during the past few months; and still have a couple more to complete. Crews have been busy maintaining the right-of-ways, drainages and the parks. City crews have also been busy reducing the threat of West Nile Virus around our City by mowing drainage areas, draining standing water and treating areas that have the potential of harboring mosquitos. As many of you know, the City has had several mosquitos test positive for West Nile Virus over the past couple of months. These positive tests have all been isolated to the area located on the west side of the City; close to the lake and the bodies of water. Efforts have been made to eliminate as much of the threat as possible but it will be impossible to remove all of the threat. Mosquito season will be with us until the first freeze, so please stay alert to the threat of West Nile Virus and what you can do to protect yourself. Remember the 4-D s: Dawn/Dusk (when mosquitos are most active); Dress (wear long sleeves and pants); DEET (the active ingredient in most insect repellent) and Drain (make sure that you don t have standing water in flower pots, bird baths, old tires etc). Please visit the City website at: www.lakeworthtx.org and click on the mosquito icon to get more information. As another reminder, even though our weather will be getting cooler (and hopefully wetter) the mandatory watering restrictions are still in place. Right now, the lakes and reservoirs are still in good shape and we are not suffering from a lack of water; but the watering restrictions are in place to help conserve water throughout the year. Please do your part to help conserve so that we can make sure that we have plenty of water for the months to come.
