SJC LONG ISLAND DRIVER S EDUCATION THE COURSE A complete, professionally taught driver s education course that will provide all students with a comprehensive introduction to the driving experience. At the end of all sessions, students will have received 24 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of in-the-car driving related to rules of the road, traffic safety concerns, defensive driving, proper handling of vehicle, parking, driving in traffic and problems of substance abuse as related to driving. Students who complete the program with a passing grade of 65 in each category will receive the Certificate of Completion (MV-285), the opportunity to have a senior driver s license (Class 5) at age 17 and an insurance reduction according to the policies of your insurance carrier. Students must obtain from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) the 50 hour completion form required for graduated licensing. REFUND POLICY If a student is not accepted into the program because classes have been filled, refunds will be isued. If a student drops the course one week prior to the first class, a refund will be granted and a $50 administrative charge will be processed. If a student withdraws the day before the first class, a 50-percent refund will be granted. Thereafter, no tuition refund will be authorized. PLEASE READ AND SIGN BELOW.* The following rules and regulations will govern the St. Joseph s College Driver and Traffic Safety Education Program and are to be read and signed by the student and parent or guardian: ABSENCEs The fall program is comprised of a total of 48 hours. The New York State Education Department Guidelines for Driver and Traffic Safety Education require a minimum of 24 hours of classroom instruction (lecture) and 24 hours of laboratory (in-car) instruction. There will be four students per car and driving will be six hours in total per student. The remaining 18 hours will be in observation while the other three students are driving. This means that a student must attend all 48 hours of this program in order to receive an MV-285 certificate. One makeup date will be provided for absences due to emergency. Otherwise, no absences are permitted. Check your schedule for possible conflicts and be certain that absences will not occur. LIMITATIONS OF JUNIOR LICENSE A student who is 16 and passes a road test, even if he or she has successfully completed the driver s education program, is still limited by a junior license. The following restrictions apply in Nassau and Suffolk counties: Check with the DMV for the Certification of 50 Hours of Supervised Driving (Form MV-262). The student may drive a vehicle appropriate to his or her license directly to or from a state approved cooperative work-study program. Carry form MV-287A with the license. The student may drive directly to or from an approved program for credit at a postsecondary institution, college or university. Carry form MV-287A with the license. The student may drive directly to or from a state approved registered evening high school. Carry form MV-287A with license. PLEASE NOTE An interpretation of the above guidelines prohibits students from driving to and from high school without a parent, until a regular operator s privileges are obtained at age 17 and the student has received an MV-285 certificate. A student who has only a permit and is enrolled in a driver s education course may drive a vehicle only when accompanied by a licensed parent, until a regular operator s privileges are obtained at age 17 and the student has received an MV-285 certificate.
