Peer Institution Selection Office of Institutional Research and Assessment December 21, 2011 Purpose: It is a common practice to adopt a group of peer institutions to use for various comparisons and strategic planning. Peer Institutions can assist in providing benchmarks for assessing institutional effectiveness, pinpointing areas deserving attention and improvement, and acting as guidance for policy development and budget allocation. The first criteria for selection came from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education (http://classifications.carnegiefoundation.org/): Public Institution Carnegie Classification: Associate-These institutions awarded associate s degrees but no bachelor s degrees. Degree of urbanization, location: Urban Serving - Urban-serving and suburban-serving institutions are physically located within Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas (PMSAs) or Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), respectively, with populations exceeding 500,000 people according to the 2000 Census. Institutions in PMSAs or MSAs with a lower total population, or not in a PMSA or MSA, were classified as rural-serving. Both Urban and Suburban were included in the first selection. Multi-Campus Multi-campus Suburban - and urban - serving colleges were identified as multi-campus if (a) they have more than one primary physical campus under the institution's exclusive control and governance, each of which provides all courses required to complete an associate's degree, or (b) they are part of a district or system comprising multiple institutions, at any of which students can complete all requirements for an associate's degree, and that are organized under one governance structure or body. Size of Student Body: FTE Enrollment of at least 10,000 students After this set of threshold criteria, there were 63 institutions. 62 were selected from the Carnegie database and St. Louis Community College was added because they recently moved to 1 IPEDS for their institution so they would qualify under these criteria. This left 51 institutions. The colleges eliminated are included the Table 2.
