Update from John Rinella, Chair of the Board Thanks to staff for organizing and participating in Catholic Education Week Celebrations with students, and for welcoming Trustee visits in your schools. With celebrations like these, we can continue our journey, Walking Forward Together in Catholic Education and raising awareness about our wonderful system. There has been a lot of positive energy and excitement this spring which has been great for student well-being and success. Some of these events have been Board-wide, involving multiple schools such as: Catholic Education Week activities and Province-Wide Mass; Forest of Reading Celebrations; TEDx; Track and Field events; Children s Mental Health Week activities; and EQAO Testing which starts this week. Congratulations to our St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School community on celebrating their 25 th anniversary this month. It was a beautiful Mass celebrated by Father Massimo Buttigieg and we were grateful to have the support of our local dignitaries and guests in attendance. On behalf of the Durham Catholic Children s Foundation Board of Directors, thank you to the organizing committee of the 4 th Annual Foundation Gala. The evening was a great success and we look forward to the next event coming up as the Durham Catholic Children s Foundation Golf Classic on Tuesday, August 22. Registration and sponsorship information is available at durhamcatholicfoundation.ca. Chair Rinella reminded all parents and guardians to find a few minutes to complete the Durham Catholic Parent Involvement Committee Parent Survey. It can be found at dcpic.ca and is an important tool for the committee in making plans to help strengthen parent engagement. 3 Durham Catholic District School Board 650 Rossland Road West, Oshawa, Ontario
Update from Anne O Brien, Director of Education May has been a wonderful month in so many different ways, from Catholic Education Week to various awards and recognition ceremonies that have taken place, and continue through to the end of June. We were blessed to kick off Catholic Education Week with our Day of Community / Staff PA Day, along with the Catholic Graduate Celebration. We have heard wonderful feedback about our gatherings, celebrating with prayers and insightful messages from our speakers. On behalf of the Senior Administrative Team, congratulations to our lifelong friends and colleagues who were called upon to receive their 25-year service awards earlier this evening, and to Patrice Joly, teacher at St. Theresa Catholic School in Whitby, for receiving the 2017 Durham Catholic District School Board Award of Merit. Congratulations are also in order for our Distinguished Catholic Educators who were announced earlier this month at a special presentation here at the Pope Francis Centre, at which time the recipient of our 2017 Distinguished Catholic Leader Award was announced. Congratulations Michelle Lantaigne, Principal at St. John Bosco Catholic School in Oshawa on receiving this meaningful award. Director O Brien thanked everyone who contributed to the 4 th Annual Durham Catholic Children s Foundation Gala on May 5. Thanks to the generous donations of our staff, guests and sponsors, the Foundation raised over $23,000 that evening. That number continues to grow every year, which speaks to the amazing support we have from our community and partners. The Community Run for Hope and Student Walk for Hope were also successful, raising over $16,000, thanks to our Catholic school leaders for their ongoing support and understanding of this important charity. Together we are making a difference in ensuring equity in our schools. EcoSchools congratulations were extended to all members of our Eco teams both at the school and Board level. We were recently informed that for the second year in a row, 100% of our schools will be recognized as Ontario EcoCertified schools. This is an outstanding achievement and sends a message to the system and the province that we care about the environment and are stewards of God s creation. 4 Durham Catholic District School Board 650 Rossland Road West, Oshawa, Ontario
