Bearden High School partnering with our families, community and post-secondary institutions will provide opportunities to assist students in accomplishing their highest potential as students and productive citizens in secondary schools, the workforce, and the community. In accordance with Arkansas Act 603 of 203 (6-15-1602), the Parent Involvement Plan, and the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (PL 107-110), the following parental involvement plan has been jointly developed by parents, students, faculty, and staff. Parenting Bearden High School defines parenting as the process of rearing a child. Bearden High School will provide support to allow families to enhance parenting skills and character education. DVD s will be available in the Parent Resource Center. The following workshops are available and will be conducted based on the needs of the parents. o Effective Parent Teacher Communication o Improving Your Child s Organization Skills o Understanding Test Scores o Computer Literacy o Parenting Skills o Home Assess Center (HAC) Annual surveys will be provided for families to share their interests, needs, and resources; i.e., My School Community and Me. Family support programs will assist families with health, nutritional, clothing, food, and household goods to meet these needs. Communicating Bearden High School defines communication as an exchange of information between the home, the school, and the community, which occurs in a regular and meaningful way. Bearden High School will employ the following methods to improve the communication partnership between the school, home, and community. Bearden High School distributes the information below each year at registration: o School calendar o Telephone contact numbers between school and parents o BHS Class Schedules Bearden High School distributes the information below through the Student/Parent Handbook: o No Bullying Information o Health and Wellness information o Mission Statement and Alma Mater o Core curriculum o Graduation requirements

Bearden High School distributes the information below through the School Website: o Sports Schedules o Testing dates o Bell Schedule Bearden High School has scheduled two parent-teacher conferences per school year with follow up conferences as needed. Student progress reports are issued every 4 ½ weeks and report cards are issued every 9 weeks. Students having at least one F or two D s are identified and parents are contacted. Students are encouraged to attend after school tutoring. Bearden High School conducts an orientation for students entering the 7th and 9th grades. Bearden High School schedules a High School Orientation Night to explain: o Core curriculum courses required for graduation o Concurrent college credit courses o Vo-tech courses o Other courses available The High School counselor conducts a college night to aid parents and students in college preparation and financial needs through a Financial Aid Informational Night. Parents are informed about high school and community activities through the Connect 5 Blackboard phone system, as well as a Facebook page, and newspaper and radio announcements. Announcements are made at athletic events. Volunteering Bearden high School defines a volunteer as someone who does something voluntarily. Bearden High School organizes and makes use of volunteers and audiences to support the school and students by use of the following methods: Bearden High School disperses volunteer surveys two times a year, through the Student/Parent Handbook. Bearden School District staff members are utilized to operate the Parent Resource Center. Parents are solicited to participate on school advisory committees. Information is posted and updated monthly through the school website to announce student performances, ceremonies, games, and assemblies to encourage all families to attend as daytime and evening audiences. Parents and community volunteers provide character building at after school activities: o Boy/girl Scouts o Cayce Charities o OBU Talent Search o Upward Bound o Pee-Wee Football/Cheerleading o Little League Baseball and Softball Leagues Learning at Home Bearden High School will work to help involve families with their children on homework and other curriculum related activities by the following methods:

Students receive a syllabus from each teacher for every class. Parents receive information on homework policies from each teacher, and how to monitor and discuss school work at home. Parents receive letters if their child has received an F, or at least two D s on a report card. Information is available in the Parent Resource Center on ways to assist students with skill they need to improve. Bearden High School will provide opportunities for family participation in helping students set academic goals in planning for college careers: o College days for students and parents to attend o Conferences with parents o Visits made by colleges to Bearden High School o Contacts from various branches of the Army Reserve and National Guard o Arkansas Scholar s Day o Class Reunions o Juniors and Seniors have a college informational night on FAFSA (receiving financial aid for college) o A Senior Binder is provided by the Career Coach School Decision Making and Advocacy- Parents are full partners in the decisions that affect children and families. Parents participate in the election of school representatives (school board) Parents serve on various committees: o School Improvement Committee o Parental Involvement Committee o Student Handbook Committee (parents that are teachers) Parents participate and operate the Bearden Band Booster organization, and the Parents of Athletes Working for Success (PAWS) club. Collaborating with the Community Community resources are used to strengthen school, families and student learning. Business leaders in the community are actively involved in, and participate in various speaking engagements for several of the high school organizations, i.e., Future Business Leaders of America(FBLA), Beta Club, Student Council, Library Club, etc. Various high school clubs and organizations participate in several community service programs and projects: o American Red Cross Blood Drive o Earth Day Clean Up o Bearden Community Food Pantry o March of Dimes o Arkansas Children s Hospital o Drug Free Red Ribbon Week

o Celebrate Freedom Week o Black History Month o Operation Christmas Child Evaluation Bearden High School will support and monitor the development, implementation, and progress of the Parent Involvement Plan. Meetings will be held periodically with the Parental Involvement Committee, parents, teachers, and students, to monitor the success of the program. The Parental Involvement facilitator will meet with the Parental Involvement Committee annually to evaluate the effectiveness of the plan. Recommended improvements and changes to the plan will be made as needed by November 15 th each year. Thereafter, an updated copy of the district s Parental Involvement Plan will be filed with the Department of Education. Professional development will be available to assist teachers and administrators in fulfilling the requirements as required by Act 603 of 2003. The Parent resource Center will be evaluated through parental feedback from surveys and questionnaires. New information and materials will be added as resources become available.
