01 May, 2018 - ISSUE 10 Contact us: Principal s Message ANZAC Day service Last week our School Captains (Liam and Jithya) and Vice-Captain (Adrianna) ably led the whole school in our ANZAC day service that was held in our school hall and performed the required procedures to a high level. Our captains also represented Glendal at a wreath laying ceremony held at Glen Waverley RSL last week, and again shone as excellent examples of our talented students. There is a report from them elsewhere in this week s newsletter. Thank you to all of the students who brought flowers to lay at the base of the school flagpole. Members from our SRC prepared an informative PowerPoint presentation and did an amazing job of explaining to the rest of the school the meaning behind ANZAC Day. Well done kids. Cross Country Despite a delayed start, yesterday we held our annual cross country event around the school grounds. All of the children competed well and we are proud of those who did their very best. The children were able to wear their house colours and the new sports uniforms were a real stand out. The sense of school pride and team spirit was abuzz as you could hear the strong encouragement of others What s On May Thursday 3 Friday 4 Saturday 5 Monday 7 Monday 7 Thursday 10 Thursday 10 Friday 11 Monday 14 Tuesday 15 Wednesday 16 Thursday 17 Friday 18 Monday 21 Wednesday 23 Monday 28 Tuesday 29 Thursday 31 June Friday 1 Monday 4 Book Fair Paws for Reading Year 5 Immigration Museum Excursion Bollywood Competition at Fairhills High School Foundation Chesterfield Farm Excursion 2:45pm Junior Book Fair Mother s Day Stall Year 2 History Box Excursion Mother s Day Stall Year 6 Interschool Sport 2:45pm Senior Year 6 Camp departs Year 6 Camp Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN Year 6 Camp Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN Year 6 Camp Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN Year 6 Camp returns 2:45pm Junior Open Morning 9-11am Open Night 6:30-7:30pm Maths Olympiad 2:45pm Senior ICAS Science Year 4 History Box Incursion Explorers Year 6 Interschool Sports 2:45pm Junior Please Remember We have Book Fair from Friday 4 th May to Thursday 10 th May. Congratulations to Miss Tierney and Miss Myles for their organisation of such a successful event. NAPLAN From the 15 th May to the 17 th May, our Year 3 and 5 students will undertake the national testing program known as NAPLAN. Whilst we recognise the importance of this testing, we also are mindful of NOT placing too much pressure on the children with regard to their performance. We often find that children who experience stress during this period actually under-perform due to their high anxiety. The Year 3 and 5 teachers have prepared the students by familiarising them with the format of the various tests, but the children s entire education will assist them to do their very best. I have included this excerpt from a document, written by our Regional Director, Judy Rose, to assist parents to understand the necessity of not placing too much pressure on the children during this time. Nowadays it would be an expectation that all schools will provide a small amount of NAPLAN practice for students. Students practise for Year 12 exams; adults practise for assessment centres. There is nothing wrong with making your students feel comfortable in an assessment environment so that they can demonstrate what they have learned. 学校办址和联系公室 Have your circumstances changed? Helping students learn how to respond to multiple choice questions is preparation for a type of assessment that will be an important part of their education in school and beyond. Teachers should use the Writing task as a moderation of their students performance in narrative or persuasive writing. Schools should use the Numeracy test to check for a range of critical misconceptions that the item analysis picks up. Please note the message below on the VCAA website which we at Glendal fully endorse: 'ACARA would like to stress that we do not believe in the value of excessive preparation for NAPLAN beyond teaching the Australian Curriculum and familiarising students with the NAPLAN process. These tests should not be used for drilling students for future NAPLAN tests. The internet has many articles about creating too much pressure around the NAPLAN assessments. Here is a link to just one worth a read! http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-03-01/constant-testing-creating-anxious-kids-perth-paediatrician-warns/7211182 Bollywood Dancing We are very excited that some of our Year 5 and 6 students are performing at Fairhills High School this coming Saturday in a Bollywood dance competition. We wish them all the very best and I look forward to reporting to you next week about their achievements. Thank you to Mrs Dhami and Mrs Fornaro for giving up their Saturday to allow the children to participate. School Leaders Last Tuesday the school leaders met with Mr Julian Hill MP, to gain a greater perspective about the requirements of leadership. The students had prepared some very thought provoking questions for Mr Hill who gave excellent responses about his own journey and experiences. This was followed by a special morning tea and an issuing of certificates to the children after their completion of a 5 week course every Thursday after school. This course focused on aspects and requirements of good leaders. An ice skating champion amongst us Congratulations to Josephine who recently won a gold medal in solo skating at the Australian National Figure Skating Championships. She will now go on to represent Australia at the Oceania International Championships in Melbourne later this year. We wish her well and hope to see her dream of competing for Australia in the Winter Olympics come true. and also a budding musician! Congratulations to Shawn in Year 6 who has been selected to play in the North-Eastern Victoria Region Youth Concert in the String Orchestra. The Regional Youth Concert aims to show the diversity and quality of music across the region. It also gives the opportunity to perform in Melbourne's premier performance venue, Hamer Hall. An amazing achievement Shawn! Paul Whitehead Acting Principal 3

COLES VOUCHERS Many thanks to all the families who have returned their vouchers. We have now sent them away. Our final total was 42,950. When this is confirmed we will let you know what equipment we have been able to purchase. Health News ALLERGY NEWS EpiPen (Adult dose 300 microgram yellow) are in short supply in Australia. Families are advised to phone the hotline 1800 274 276 to obtain EpiPens. This hotline has been set up for patients, pharmacists and doctors. Excerpt from Australian Doctor 01/05/2018: Patients may struggle to get their hands on an EpiPen for another several months because of international manufacturing problems. Last week, Mylan, which distributes Epi Pens in Australia, announced the shortage would not be fixed for some months because of delays with Meridian Medical Technologies, the company that produces them. Mylan has stressed that Epi Pens are still available in Australia, but supplies are "constrained" and pharmacies may only receive part of their orders. The current shortage affects only the adult EpiPen (300µg adrenaline), not the junior version (150µg adrenaline). Please ensure you state this process a month prior to your Epipen expiring. Thank you Yours in Health Kerri Carboon 5
