BRIGHTON CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL 1051 Connolly Drive, Butler WA 6036 PO Box 350, Quinns Rocks WA 6030 Tel: (08) 9562 9500 Fax: (08) 9562 4929 E-mail: admin@brightoncps.wa.edu.au Newsletter No.3 BRIGHTON BUGLE 3 March 2017 This week we began the season of LENT with Ash Wednesday. Taking place 46 days before Easter Sunday, Ash Wednesday is one of the most important holy days in the liturgical calendar and signals a season of prayer and fasting. Coming from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting, Ash Wednesday involves applying ashes, made from blessed palm branches from the previous year's Palm Sunday Mass, to a person s forehead. The ashes applied to the forehead symbolise the dust from which God made us. The priest speaks the words: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return" or "Repent and believe in the Gospel." Dear Parents, Children and Friends, Over the past two weeks our school has held a number of community gatherings and celebrations. The annual P&F Meet and Greet evening held on Friday 17 February was a very enjoyable evening for those who were able to attend. Thank you to the P&F for organising this free event for our families, your efforts are greatly appreciated. The Year 3 Assembly was a wonderful celebration of the talent within our school, thanks to all involved in putting the assembly together for the children and congratulations to the children for sharing their excellence with us. On Tuesday we celebrated Shrove Tuesday when we came together to share our school s traditional pancake breakfast. The idea behind celebrating Shrove Tuesday is to get ourselves ready for the liturgical season of Lent. It was a fabulous sight witnessing so many families coming together to join in the occasion. Thank you to all staff members for organising and running the breakfast, the kids loved it. The next day we once again gathered at our Ash Wednesday Mass, this was a very special and solemn celebration to commence the period of Lent. Thank you to Father Robert for celebrating mass for us and to all staff involved in preparing the mass. Thank you to our Year 3 teachers and Mrs Christie for organising and conducting the Reconciliation Workshops last week. The feedback I received was extremely positive. Please continue to keep the children in your prayers as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Saturday 11 March.

Due to a number of our children having allergies to nuts, some quite severe, Brighton Catholic Primary School is an Allergy Aware school. We have one particular child who can have an acute and extremely dangerous reaction to the smell of nuts. To assist with this child s safety and the safety of all children please do not send your child/ren to school with any nut products including foods with nut additives such as muesli bars and the like. In the media over the past couple of weeks you would have heard or read about the Royal Commission into Child Abuse. Our Archbishop, Timothy Costello, had to give evidence at the Commission and as a result he decided to record and write a response to share with us. Please find attached to the newsletter his written response. I have also included the link to his recorded message. http://www.perthcatholic.org.au/our_archdiocese-archbishop- Videos.htm Please take the time to read or listen to the Archbishop s reflection on the outcome of the Commission. During this week you would have receive two text messages reminding you that today and next Tuesday are both Pupil Free Days. The children will resume school on Wednesday 8 March. I hope you are able to take the opportunity to enjoy the extra-long weekend. Next weekend all Western Australians will vote and elect our State Government for the next four years. Our Director of Catholic Education, Mr Tim McDonald, has asked the Education Minister and the Shadow Minister of Education for their party s policies and views on a number of issues pertaining to our Catholic Education System. I have attached the responses to the newsletter for you to read and reflect on. A letter of invitation was sent home on pink paper on Tuesday inviting all families to attend one of the two workshops regarding the implementation on the Code of Conduct into our school. I urge at least one family member to attend one of the workshops as the implementation of this policy is all about your children s wellbeing. The workshops are being held on Monday 13 March. For further details please contact the office. Your 2017 Annual School Fee Statements were sent out recently. Some parents fortunately picked up that the Kindy fees were incorrect and also the building levy for some families. We are working with our software provider to correct this problem and once corrected the new invoices will be sent home to those parents impacted by the concern. If you would like to discuss this issue with Mrs Bastian please drop into to see her or make an appointment via the phone. If you are having any concerns about paying fees please make an appointment to come and see me. No child will ever be exempted from a Catholic Education at Brighton Catholic Primary School due to financial hardship. You can download the form from our website or alternatively you can call into the office to pick up a form. PROJECT COMPASSION This year s Lenten Project Compassion focus is, Love Your Neighbour. Over the next six weeks classes will be looking at the needs of families such as Dinia in the Philippines, Martina in Timor Liste, Uncle Richard in Australia, Nguyet in Vietnam, Semiti in Fiji and Aloma also in the Philippines. Our Fundraiser will be a free dress day on Friday 10 th March with a donation of a gold coin. The children are to be sun smart by wearing appropriate clothing for working in the classroom and playing outside. As members of Catholic Schools Australia wide, we are helping to end poverty, promote justice and uphold the dignity of the person through the children s contributions to Project Compassion. YEAR 4-6 CHOIR We have had a very good response to children wanting to join our newly formed choir. They are reminded Choir begins Monday 13th March at 7.50am sharp in the undercover area. Mrs Dalton is looking forward to working with them. LIBRARY NEWS Greetings from the Library and we are already well into the fifth week of the term. Many students have mentioned that their family are taking advantage of the offer to collect many of the works of Roald Dahl as advertised in the local paper. The man is celebrated as one of the greatest writers of the modern era and the sales of his work attests this statement. Grades two and three have been having a laugh while listening to, George s Marvellous Medicine. Dahl does warn the reader not to try creating the mixture at home, it could be dangerous. He also shares his motto that he lived by: My candle burns at both ends It will not last the night But ah my foes and oh my friends It gives a lovely light. We have discussed the statement above and most thought Mr Dahl not only had a wonderful sense of humour, but a lot of energy as well. He must have been very busy in the little hut built in the apple orchard at the bottom of the garden at his home. If you are looking for an entertaining read, little people or big, you can t go past a Roald Dahl. There are so many to choose from. Regards Anne Versteegen and Marie Gray ( Library Ladies UNIFORM SHOP ** Please note we have had a price increase on several uniform items (as mentioned in our last school newsletter).
