OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY WORKING TOGETHER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE 9th February PTA Quiz Night - Bring your own Buffet The PTA have done a tremendous job of raising money for the school in 2017. Their hard work has meant that this year alone the school will have 10,000 to support the work of departments and to fund resources for the outdoor spaces. We are starting off this year's fund raising activities with the BHS PTA quiz night. This will take place on Friday 9th February. Tickets will cost 5 (including eliminator round) and will only be available for purchase on the night. The night will be a 'bring your own buffet" and a bar will be available. Please come along and support the school and I look forward to seeing the regular contestants. Affiliative Business Partnerships & Donations Thanks to the parents and businesses who contributed so generously last term. During the term, we received donations of sports equipment, prizes for events and gained sponsorships to help improve our school facilities. If you work for a company which supports match funding for schools or own a business which you feel may be may be able to support our school in any way. Please get in touch with Mr Stonehouse (sstonehouse@bramhallhigh.stockport.sch.uk)

Year 10 A warm welcome back to all of our students in year 10, thank you all so much for your kind words of support and interest over my absence for paternity leave. This week we have been visited by Amy from Camps International who has been promoting their self-funded trips abroad to Borneo. It seems to be a fantastic opportunity with loads of options for adventure and charitable giving in a beautiful but fragile part of the world. If any student is interested in attending please return to school on the evening of Wednesday 23 th Jan for a parents information seminar. It s great to be back! Mr Flynn HOY 10 Theatre Production of Jekyll & Hyde - Year 10 This week all of year 10 have been invited to a performance of Jekyll & Hyde. As they are studying the novella for their GCSE, this would be an invaluable addition to their understanding of the text. The performance will be held in school at 2pm on Wednesday 7th February in the main hall. A voluntary contribution of 4 has been requested from each student attending. Although this is not compulsory, if we do not raise enough funds the performance will not go ahead. Payments can be made either by cheque/cash to the main office or via SCOPAY. Students entitled to Pupil Premium will be able to watch the performance free of charge. Year 11 We had a fantastic extra assembly this week, when Amy from Camps International came in to explain about a really exciting prospect that you can sign up for a four week expedition to Borneo in Summer 2019! During which participants will partake in a variety of activities, in addition to completing a PADI Open Water Scuba Diving Course. This would be an amazing and potentially life changing experience, and one that I think you should all give some serious consideration to! I don t mind admitting that I was really jealous that school staff weren t being invited Getting involved in extra-curricular activities like this will not only give you fantastic life experience, confidence and such like, it will also look seriously good on college, university and job applications and in that way would be something that would benefit you long after the experience has finished. Please don t let the fact that you will have left school for a year by the time it rolls around. School and camps international will support you just as much with the fund raising aspect and information etc whilst you are at college (or wherever you are). You have all been given a letter to take home about the BORNEO SCUBA EXPEDITION PARENTS PRESENTATION, ON WEDNESDAY 24 TH JANUARY AT 18.30 IN THE MAIN HALL. So if you think you might be interested in signing up, or just want to find out a bit more about it before you sign up, make sure you speak to your parents/carers and get them to come along! Honestly, it looks AMAZING! Revision techniques Advice for Parents. There are many ways in which you can help your child plan their exam revision: Get a printed copy of your child s exam timetable. As simple as it may sound, some children will go through their exams without a printed copy of their timetable and solely rely on their friends to tell them when their next test. Having a physical copy is more practical and is easier to visualise and plan from. Help them plan out a revision schedule. However, remember that you are merely supporting them and that it is up to your child to outline their schedule. This will also give them the opportunity to take responsibility and learn to prioritise their work. Plan realistically. There are limits to how much work can effectively be done in a day, in order to be able to balance leisure and revision and be as productive as possible. Timing revision sessions. We recommend that pupils aim to revise a particular subject for around 2 hours in order for them to remain focused yet get enough time to go into a certain level of depth. Ideally, you would want your child to focus on a maximum of 2 subjects on a school night and 4 to 6 subjects during weekend days.

Plan for breaks. Also remember that your child needs regular breaks or else could become worn out, which would affect their productivity. Ideally, plan a short 5-10 minutes break every one and half to two hours, longer ones for meal times. When setting a revision timetable, remember to also reward them with break days or cheat days. Boundaries. You need to respect your child s boundaries when helping them revise, if you push or interfere too much, they might not come to you for help as easily. Establishing specific location to revise. Having a number of study place is important as having specific locations where your child can sit down and focus solely on their revision is essential to their concentration and thus productivity. o Somewhere quiet. Whether it is a local library, a quiet room or some other study room, your child needs a space to study. We recommend having various study spaces to choose from as one could not be available one day requiring to have another option at hand. o Avoid the bedroom. Although very tempting, revising in their bedroom is often not the most productive alternative, due to the many distractions surrounding them. o Take breaks outside of study spaces. Similarly, ensure that your child takes breaks away from their study space. A study place should ideally only be for studying. Further advice (Websites) https://www.goconqr.com/en/examtime/guide/gcse-revision-tips/ www.justincraig.ac.uk/a-levels-gcse-revision-tips Please note, there will be a session on revision in next week s assembly. Mr Gravell Head of Year 11 KS4- Y9-11 Borneo Yrs 9, 10, 11 As you may know, we have partnered with Camps International to offer students in Years 9, 10, and 11 the opportunity to go on a life-changing 4-week expedition to Borneo during the summer of 2019. This expedition will allow students to live alongside rural communities and work on projects such as building community centres, combating deforestation and protecting wildlife. Students will also undertake a PADI Open Water Scuba Diving course. (Those unable to dive due to health concerns, will participate in another activity.) Students will gain a huge number of skills and experiences through their trip and through their fundraising activities to pay for it! Camps International will support students in their fund-raising activities and with regular advice/updates and planning for the trip. You are invited to attend a presentation evening to hear more and ask any questions you may have. This takes place on Wednesday 24th January at 18:30 in the Music department. Please arrive in school via the Recreation Centre and turn right towards Music. If you d like to see examples of previous summers expeditions to Borneo, you can see photos at the Camps Twitter feed
