Opportunities for Sophomores Hugh O Brian Youth Leadership Program HOBY programs provide youth selected by their schools the opportunity to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences for a week during the summer. Students can pick up applications at Counselor Connection starting Monday, October 6, 2014. Applications are due back to the Counseling Office by Monday, November 3, 2014. One male and one female will be chosen by a committee. Winners will be announced before the winter break. The Leadership Program will be held at The University of Texas at Austin, June 2015.

Opportunities for Sophomores Kiawanis Foundation - Sophomore of the Year 10 th graders that demonstrate leadership abilities, are selfdirected learners, and those that volunteer in their community are encouraged to apply for this $600 college scholarship opportunity. Students can pick up applications at Counselor Connection starting Monday, October 6, 2014. Applications are due back to the Counseling Office by Monday, November 3, 2014.

Options for Earning College Credit Advanced Placement Program Offers a chance to receive college credit through AP exams, if passed. (The exam score and type of credit awarded varies with each university.) 9 th grade: Human Geography AP, World History AP 10 th grade: World History AP, Computer Science AP 11 th grade: U.S. History AP, English III AP, Psych AP,Comparative Gov AP, Statistics AP, Physics I AP 12 th grade: Gov AP, Macro Eco AP, European Hist AP, Calculus AB and BC AP, English IV AP, Biology II AP, Chem II AP, Physics C AP, Art AP Foreign Language AP is available based upon enrollment.

Wednesday, October 15 PSAT/NMSQT Will be given during the school day Cost - $18 Register and pay for test ONLINE (https://user.totalregistration.net/psat/441689) September 8 th October 3 th Late Registration $20 Cash Only October 4 th October 10 th, on a test availability basis only. All sophomores are encouraged to register and take this test.

Reasons to take the PSAT Scholars Program Sophomores that qualified last year scored 154+ on the PSAT. If you qualify, you participate in summer classes that better prepare you for the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying PSAT in 11 th grade and subsequent SAT/ACT testing for college admission.

PSAT/NMSQT Scoring Scores are reported on a scale of 20 80 for each section (Critical Reading, Math, & Writing) Results will be given to the students during the 2 nd semester Average 10 th grade scores: (Selection Index: 128) Critical Reading 43 Math 44 Writing 41 Prepare for the Junior level PSAT test (National Merit qualifying test) by enrolling in a SAT Prep course during your Junior year

Aspire Test Measures academic progress in high school. It is designed to improve students' preparation for education, training, and work after high school. Aspire is the official practice test for the ACT test. Replacing the PLAN test. Tuesday, November 11, 2014. Free of charge. Students will receive a score report highlighting areas of strength and weakness.

Career Exploration Career Unit through English II at start of spring semester. Career Day for all sophomores early February. Students attend informational sessions with current professionals representing various career clusters.

Volunteer Hours Begin NOW volunteering in the community, at school, or with your church. Keep record of hours accumulated on cell phone. More important than the hours, the lessons you learn/how service affects you. Display of commitment to a specific cause; more important to college application than multiple short term volunteer activities.

Get Involved! Goal: 3 Extracurricular Activities that you are INVOLVED with not merely a member. Join a UIL team: Athletics, Fine Arts program, UIL Academic team, etc. Join or Start a Club run for office, chair a committee, etc. Outside of school activities church, scouts, club sports, NCL, etc.
