Trainees Committee Develop your leadership and teamwork skills as a member of our Trainees Committee. The role of the Trainees Committee is to inform and advise the College on key issues which directly impact on trainees, and to contribute to discussions and activities around all aspects of College life. The committee is strong and proactive; committee members work hard to engage with a multitude of bodies, committees and individuals in order to promote trainees interests across a wide range of issues and domains. Committee members are all current trainees, representing each stage of training from undergraduate study to higher specialty training, and covering a wide range of medical and surgical specialties. Awards and scholarships Members of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow have the opportunity to apply for a number of awards to help progress research and improve your knowledge and skills. College travelling fellowship This award supports a variety of learning opportunities and enables members of the College to travel to centres of excellence outside their country of residence for periods of up to 12 months. Difficult conversations Tue 22 May and Wed 5 Sep 2018 NEW for 2018 When faced with difficult patient scenarios, clinicians can often struggle to articulate the conversation and sometimes use terms which can upset patients, or lapse into jargon which confuses them. This interactive workshop will cover the most common difficult discussions that trainees will have to conduct with patients and their relatives. CV building workshop Sat 27 Oct 2018 NEW for 2018 This one-day workshop will provide an introduction to CV writing and interview techniques for trainees. The sessions will also offer advice on how to get involved with and gain experience in the key non-technical skills areas required for core and specialty training applications, such as teaching, research, audit and management. The course covers all aspects of the GMC 2016 guideline competency framework and may be recognised as leading to the award of up to 10 credits towards further study on the University of Dundee, Certificate/Diploma/Master of Medical Education (MMEd) programme. How to do it: Practical Skills Stations for Core Medical Trainees Mon 8 Oct and Mon 22 Oct 2018, Mon 14 Mar and 26 Mar 2019 This course is currently only available to core trainees in the West of Scotland. This course is an excellent opportunity to develop your practical skills and gain knowledge in common CMT procedures. Each skills station will provide hands-on experience, with access to high quality training materials, and one-on-one guidance from experienced trainers. The six skills stations covered are: CVC insertion Lumbar puncture Knee aspiration NG tube insertion/basic tracheostomy care NIV Chest Drain Fees Each delegate is required to pay 20 to secure their booking This can be claimed back from study budget funds at NES. Course places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. IMPACT Tue 8 May 2018 Mon 11 Jun 2018 Mon 17 Sep 2018 Tue 4 Dec 2018 Mon 10 Jun 2019 IMPACT is a two-day course introducing the principles and practice of acute medical care. IMPACT enables trainee doctors at CMT1 level and above to assess and treat acutely unwell patients and where appropriate gives guidance on when to ask for help. The course combines lectures and tutorials covering key medical emergencies, and skills-stations for CMT required skills to enable any trainee to deal with emergency situations with confidence. The course now also includes an elearning package, SIMPACT, available for pre-course reading and post-course simulation exercises. Suitable for Core trainees FY2 level (you must have completed 8 months in acute receiving) 22 23

Renal biopsy cadaver course International Diploma in Expedition and Wilderness Medicine Thu 16 Aug 2018 Closing date: Thu 19 Jul 2018 Run by two consultant nephrologists, a consultant radiologist and a consultant renal pathologist, this course provides hands-on experience using fresh/frozen cadaveric material. The programme includes: Indications for native renal biopsy Complications of renal biopsy Ultrasound localisation of the kidney with demonstration by a consultant radiologist and hands-on experience Hands-on experience of real-time ultrasound guided native renal biopsy in cadavers Suitable for Core medical trainees intending to apply for renal specialty training Appropriate divisions of biopsy cores for maximal diagnostic yield Post-procedural management (including bleeding complications) 29 October 2018 Blended learning 12 month course Structured in conjunction with the Oxford Handbook of Expedition and Wilderness Medicine, the International Diploma in Expedition and Wilderness Team offer students the chance to gain a fully recognised qualification, with postgraduate diploma equivalence through Glasgow Caledonian University, while also having the opportunity to travel to challenging locations both in the UK and Morocco. Suitable for Foundation doctors and core trainees with an interest in formally developing their skills in expedition medicine. MRCP(UK) Part 1 exam Format: Multiple choice question (MCQ) paper Locations: Glasgow, Belfast, Leeds, Liverpool MRCP(UK) Successful completion of the MRCP(UK) Diploma is a key requirement for progression to medical specialty training. The College runs the MRCP(UK) Part 1, Part 2 and PACES examinations in centres across the UK, and provides online and practical revision courses to help candidates prepare for PACES. Our PACES package offers savings of up to 335 for PACEs candidates, combining revision modules and discounted membership subscription fees. Delegates will have the opportunity to examine neurology inpatients and outpatients at each station under exam conditions, with feedback from the examiners.
