CANDLEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL Message from Principal Andrew Greene 1st Quarter 2013 I hope this finds you getting ready for the holiday season! Based on questions that I have received from parents, I wanted to take this opportunity to clarify a few important items. As you know, NYS has raised the bar with the Common Core Standards and the assessments that measure a student s progress against those standards. All students who will be taking these assessments are held to the same standard regardless of the class that they are in. With regards to Special Education students, they receive accommodations that are designed to help them meet the standards, but the standards cannot be modified since that would leave students at a disadvantage when they have to take the state assessments. As you know accommodations do not alter the grade level standards but modifications fundamentally alter the grade level expectations. In addition, there is a difference between differentiation of instruction and program modifications. Differentiation of instruction is a teacher s response to the learner s needs guided by some general principles: respectful tasks, flexible grouping and ongoing assessments and adjustment. Teachers can differentiate content, process and product according to a student s readiness, interests, and learning profile. This is done through strategies such as tiered lessons, varying organizers and small group instruction. DI strategies enable students to meet the same academic standard, but with different types of scaffolding to help them achieve success. At Candlewood, we fully realize the stress and anxiety that students are now facing with the increased rigor that NYS has demanded. I can assure you, we will do whatever we can to help students meet the standards that all children are now accountable for mastering. I encourage you to continue looking at the teacher s eboard for support material, links, and exemplars that will enable you to work with your child in areas where they may struggle. Finally, since the standards are built on a learning progression, I have included an example of one for ELA (standards for Reading are not included) and one for math (page 2 and 3). As you will see, the same concept gets progressively more difficult as students progress through the grades. WISHING ALL CANDLEWOOD FAMILIES A VERY HEALTHY AND HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!! FROM CANDLEWOOD ADMINISTRATION AND STAFF!

NOTES & QUOTES-1st Quarter 2013 Page 6 YEARBOOK ADS Order your 2014 Candlewood Yearbook today! Go to www.yearbookordercenter.com and use school code 4572. This is the only way to guarantee that your child gets a yearbook in June. You can forward any pictures you have of school activities to the following email address: candlewoodyearbook@gmail.com or upload them to the following website www.hjeshare.com using school code 4572. We may use some of your photos in the yearbook. Please see the form on Page 9 with important information regarding placing an ad or a personal message for your 8th grader in the 2013-2014 yearbook. 8th Grade Tree Once again we had the pleasure of having Cathy Russell in to the Art rooms. Mrs. Russell is the artist who has been designing our 8th grade trees which adorn the hallways near the main office. Mrs. Russell had students working with clay to create the tiles which give the tree, or in the case of this year, topiary its character. Students roll out a slab of clay and make an impression in the clay using the soles of their shoes. The slabs are then cut to fit the theme of the tree. Mrs. Russell will be back in December to glaze the tiles and finish the tree. Once Mrs. Russell has completed the tree all the 8th grade students sign their names on the tree. We can t wait to see the final tree which will be unveiled at the annual Art Exhibit in May. Mrs. Karen Andres Art Teacher

NOTES & QUOTES-1st Quarter 2013 Page 7 Institute of Creative Problem Solving In May the LI Young Scholars of Mathematics competition was held at SUNY Old Westbury. Five students from our district performed at a top honoree level. 950 top ranking students from school districts on Long Island participated in this competition and 80 students were selected to be in this top honoree category. This distinction implies that they are among the top one-tenth of one percent in math of all students on Long Island in his or her grade level. Three of those students are Candlewood students. CONGRATULATIONS: Danielle Fulep 8th Grade Gilbert Spencer 8th Grade David Tang 8th Grade STUDY BUDDY PROGRAM Since October 2006 I have been running the Study Buddy Program. The Program runs during all lunch periods. It offers peer academic support to Candlewood students seeking to improve their academic skills. Students are matched academically with a volunteer peer tutor from the National Junior Honor Society, under the supervision of Mr. Andrew Black. Thanks to the gracious cooperation of Mrs. Diane Bishop, Candlewood students have a meeting of the minds, in the school library. The students are able to find each other in the cafeteria thanks to Ms. Peggy Jansson. Study Buddies is a collaborative effort that is improving students self esteem, providing social interaction and enhancing academic success. The program has made a significant impact and will continue through the enthusiastic efforts of our Candlewood students who truly are the best of the best. Ms. Jodi E. Cohen, Guidance Counselor

NOTES & QUOTES-1st Quarter 2013 Page 8 Thanksgiving Fundraiser Candlewood Middle School is sponsoring a Thanksgiving pie and bread fundraiser with the help of White Post Farms in Melville. Thank you to all those who participated and ordered the variety of delicious pies and scrumptious jumbo breads! They will be available for pickup on Wednesday, November 27th in front of Candlewood s main office, anytime from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. A special thanks to the PTA for their continuous support in making this another Candlewood success! Mrs. Katz and Ms. Javaherforoush Two Candlewood students co-authored Seven Days with Carole, a book which celebrates the life of Carole Robertson who died in the Birmingham church bombing. They are among teen members of the Jack and Jill of America organization. This is one of the oldest African American organizations that has offered to sell the book from its website and the proceeds of the book sales will be donated to Jack and Jill s Foundation. Congratulations and Great Job to: Brianna Hutchinson Kiara Starling MESSAGE TO CANDLEWOOD PARENTS: As a reminder, we do not interrupt classes to call a student to the main office or to notify them to retrieve an item unless it is an emergency. The protocol we like to follow is calling students during lunch periods. Our goal is to protect academic time as much as possible. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation. Andrew Greene, Principal
