It has been wonderful to see so many parents involved in activities here at the school, from handing out prizes during lunch to volunteering in classrooms to attending and supporting after-school events; we are incredibly fortunate to have active community and family members. Thank you for supporting our students. An extra special thanks goes to Andrea Gleich, Kelly Clark, and Luann Beatty, who have taken on lead roles in promoting school spirit and school programs here at NKHS. We have introduced some new programs and initiatives to NKHS in the last couple of months. We recently brought the Our Gems program in, a highly successful program to empower girls and will soon see the partner program for boys, Our Gents, on campus as well. If you are interested in learning more about these programs, contact your counselor. We have also started a student recognition program with teachers acknowledging students who embody essential NKHS character traits each month. Students earn a reward if they receive a written card from their teachers.

Principal s Message Continued With a continued focus on attendance, we have started doing Donut Drop-Ins for classes who have 100% attendance. Finally, our ASB hosted their first Vike Night, with over 100 students attending a Dodgeball Tournament in the hopes of creating fun, safe activities for students to be involved in. Be on the lookout for future Vike Nights! You should also be aware that there are two NKSD levy measures coming out on a February ballot. For more information, go to the Levy section of the district website or follow this link: http:// nkschools.org/cms/one.aspx?ortalid=419589&pageid=10329209 Have a wonderful Winter Break and thank you for your continued support. Sincerely, Megan Sawicki NKHS Principal Page 2

SEVERE WEATHER HOMELESS SHELTER In times of severe weather, please feel contact the 211 phone number or the Crisis Clinic Hotline number listed below to find out where a shelter is open and available on that particular day. CRISIS CLINIC HOTLINE: (360) 479-3033 OR dial 2-1-1 FROM OUR NKHS FRENCH PROGRAM Bonjour! Voilà another friendly message from the NKHS French program. If you are interested in helping your students see new parts of the world, please call or email me to find out about our upcoming trips to Europe. You can also visit my teacher website through nkschools.org. This spring we are headed to France, and next summer we are headed to France, Spain, and Germany. My phone number is 360-396-3178, and my email address is lhaveman@nkschools.org The advanced students are well underway with the French 103 course through the University of WA, and they are capable of spending entire class periods speaking only in French with one another, and with me. I am very proud of their hard work and dedication. The second year students are diving into le passé composé, which will allow them to tell you interesting stories! Please ask them to share a few sentences in French with you. Our first year students are growing in their descriptive skills. They are starting to describe themselves and others, using both physical and personality traits. Ask them which famous person they just described! French high school students will be visiting our area for three weeks in mid-february and early March. This has been a wonderful cultural and language exchange over the past few years. If you have room in your heart and in your home to host a French visitor, please let me know, and please visit LanguageAndFriendship.com to find out more. Très bonne continuation à vous tous! SENIOR WARNING LETTERS December is here and the end of the semester is fast approaching, which could mean that you may be receiving a Senior Warning Letter in the mail. Senior warning letters are a way for teachers to give notice to 12 th grade students that may be in danger of not passing their class and may not graduate if that class is needed to fulfill a graduation requirement. Each counselor will be carefully looking over each warning and will give feedback on what the student needs to do to help improve their grade. We want every student to succeed, receive their diploma and graduate with their class.
