JUNIOR TAS SPORT (WEEK 3 TERM 3) Last Saturday saw 17 out of our 18 Junior TAS Football and Basketball teams compete in 1 of the Term 3 season. Thirteen of these teams played here at Ormiston College, which created a wonderful atmosphere on the Junior School Oval and in the Somerset Sports Centre. OC home sporting fixtures are the envy of Junior TAS and TAS and although we had no Senior School matches on the weekend, there was still a buzz around the campus. Our Junior TAS Football teams have had an impressive start to the season, with six wins, a draw and two losses. The depth we have in football at the moment is something I m sure Mr Makridakis and the Senior Football coaches are looking forward to seeing in future years. A big win to our Junior Open Boys over arch-rivals JPC was very pleasing, but watching our first ever all-girls team take to the field was certainly the highlight of the round. They were down 3-1 to Redeemer at halftime only to claw their way back to a 4-3 victory by the final whistle. A wonderful start to the season. Our debutants in Year 4 kicked their season off with two wins from three games, as did our teams from Year 5. The Year 6 boys started their campaign with a hard fought 5-5 draw. Of the eight Junior TAS Basketball teams that graced the hardwood, only two managed to secure victories on the scoreboard. They lost no admirers from this rocky start to the season however, as three of the six losses were by four points or less. These nail-biting results can often swing the other way and I m sure the lessons learnt on the weekend will serve our young Redbacks well. Our girl s teams played with a lot of spirit, with the highlight of the round surely coming from our Year 5 team, who managed to post a huge score of 37 only to go down by four points to a very talented JPC outfit. There is obviously a lot of potential in this team, and by all reports the match was of a very high standard. The boys teams managed to snare two wins from three matches, with our Year 5 Blue boys knocking over Canterbury College and our Year 6 boys taking care of Faith. 2 sees all 18 teams playing, with six matches to be played here at OC. I wish all our football and basketball teams the best of luck as they endeavour to improve their performance each week. All you can do is do your very best! JUNIOR TAS ATHLETICS TRAINING Junior TAS Athletics training is underway, with impressive participation so far. I would encourage any students in Year 3 6 who are pushing for selection in the Junior TAS Athletics Team to make their way down to training. Please note that these training sessions are not necessarily for everyone and only those students who are genuinely interested in pursuing athletics should attend. The weekly training schedule can be found below. Tuesday @ 7:15am Shot Put & Long Jump Wednesday @ 7:15am 100m, 200m & 800m Thursday @ 7:15am 100m, 200m, 800m, Discus & High Jump The Junior TAS Athletics Carnival is on Friday, 8 September. Selection for this carnival will be based upon results from the Interhouse Athletics Carnival, training commitment and a possible selection trial. I will keep everyone posted about this. REDBACK TV RedbackTV is back in business! Episode 21 went live this week and features a wrap-up of 2 TAS and 1 Junior TAS. There is also an adorable look into our ELC students joining in at the Interhouse Athletics Carnival. Jay Dowdell Head of Junior School PE & Sport j.dowdell@ormistoncollege.com.au

TEAM OF THE WEEK In 2015, the Team of the Week concept was created to recognise students who display admirable qualities whilst representing Ormiston College. Each round there will be a Team of the Week named from our Saturday fixtures. Players can be nominated based on five different criteria which align with the ethos of Junior TAS Sport. These criteria include: Sportsmanship: Shows great sportsmanship towards their opposition, teammates, coaches and referees. Teamwork: Strives to include every member of the team. This could be through good gameplay, communication or just showing encouragement. Redback Spirit: Tries their hardest to do their very best right throughout the game. May not score the most points or goals, but is giving their very best for the team. Outstanding Skill: Shows great skill and ability throughout the game. Improvement: Always listens to their coach and is therefore showing great improvement week to week. The coaches from each team will nominate two players to be put forward for Team of the Week. One of these nominations will be included in either the Basketball Team of the Week or the Football Team of the Week. All nominations will be added up to go towards the Team of the Term which will named and recognised at the end of Term 3. Please find the 1 Team of the Week below.
