More about David Suzuki: Our namesake, Dr. David Suzuki, is Co-Founder of the David Suzuki Foundation and an award-winning scientist, environmentalist and broadcaster. He has won numerous academic awards and holds 24 honorary degrees in Canada, the U.S. and Australia. He was elected to the Royal Society of Canada and is a Companion of the Order of Canada. On June 10, 2002 he received the John Drainie Award for broadcasting excellence. Dr. Suzuki is also recognized as a world leader in sustainable ecology. He is the recipient of UNESCO s Kalinga Prize for Science, the United Nations Environment Program Medal, UNEPs Global 500 and in 2009 won the Right Livelihood Award that is considered the alternate Nobel.

SPORTS SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR (SHSM) Our SHSM program in Sports at David Suzuki SS has a focus on personal development, interpersonal skills and leadership. All students will gain knowledge about physical fitness and health education, kinesiology, recreation and leisure activities. The in-school program consists of a bundle of courses in each of the areas which will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance student learning. Students will be involved in reach ahead experiences and exposure to post-secondary institutions such as the University of Waterloo as well as Humber and Sheridan Colleges. Students will also have an opportunity for job shadowing and job twinning experiences. There will be sector recognized certifications in WHMIS, AED, First Aid, CPR, as well as coaching (NCCP), High Five, taping and wrapping. In order to complete an SHSM in Sports, students 1. Complete a bundle of 9 specific courses (see chart below); 2. Complete Sector Certifications and/or training programs; 3. Participate in experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector (e.g. co-op work experience, job shadowing, job twinning); 4. Learn and document the industry Essential Skills and work habits using the Ontario Skills Passport; 5. Gain Reach Ahead experience connected to the student s post-secondary plans.
