Appendix 2 University of Northern Colorado Fall 2003 New Student Recruitment Plan For Fall 2004/Spring 2005 Entrance Terms Submitted by Gary Gullickson, Director of Admissions September 4, 2003 I. Freshman New Student Recruitment A. In-State Recruitment Travel 1. College Day/Night Programs - UNC will participate in the Colorado Council on High School/College Relations fall 2003 college day/night program in 65 host high schools. Timeline: September 8, 2003 - November 18, 2003. 2. High School Follow-up Travel - UNC representatives will conduct high school follow-up visits to 318 high schools during the fall semester. In some cases more than one visit will be scheduled. In addition to the regular follow-up visit, UNC admissions representatives will conduct application days in high schools in Northern Colorado, Denver and Colorado Springs areas. Application days allow the student to apply for admission and be accepted on the spot in the high school. During the spring 2004 semester, a total of 250 high school follow-up visits will be scheduled. Timeline: September 8 - November 28, 2003 and January 14 - March 26, 2004. 3. High School Parent Night Presentations - UNC admissions staff will present information on preparation for college and the college selection process during parent night programs at high schools in Northern Colorado, Denver, and Cheyenne, WY. Invitations to make presentations at parent night programs are sought as they provide excellent exposure to UNC. An estimated total of twelve of these evening programs will be conducted. Timeline: During the fall 2003 semester. 4. Colorado Counselor Update Workshop Presentations - UNC will present UNC update information during programs at six sites in Colorado sponsored by the Colorado Council on High School/College Relations. Approximately 900 high school counselors will attend these counselor workshops from each high school in the state. Timeline: September 19, 22, 23, 24 and 26 and October 10, 2003. 5. UNC will host a Counselor Workshop for approximately 200 high school counselors and college representatives. There will be an information fair as part of this workshop. Timeline: September 23, 2003. B. Out-of-State Recruitment Travel 1. WUE Recruitment Travel - Recruitment travel will be conducted in the following targeted WUE states: a. Alaska - Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks college fairs and several high school visits Timeline: October 25 29, 2003. 1
b. Hawaii - Four weeks of fall high school visits, visiting 55 high schools; five fall college fairs and one spring NACAC Honolulu fair. Timeline: September 29 - October 26, 2003, April 24, 2004. c. New Mexico - One week of fall college fairs Albuquerque area. Timeline: October 12 20, 2003. d. South Dakota Seven College Day/Night fairs in Sioux Falls and eastern South Dakota high schools. Timeline: October 20 24, 2003. e. Wyoming - Three weeks of fall college fairs and one week of fall high school visits. Timeline: September 24-25, 2003. e. Nebraska Greater Omaha Area fair, and one week of Omaha high school follow-up visits. Timeline: October 26 October 31, 2003. f. Texas - Two weeks of seven college fairs and high school visits Dallas/Fort Worth. One week of college fairs and high school visits San Antonio. Timeline: September 8 12 and November 14-17, 2003. II. On-Campus Recruitment Activities Coordinated by Visitors Center A. Daily Campus Visitation Program - Five motorized campus tours will be offered each day, Monday through Friday at 9:00 am, 10:30 am, Noon, 2:00 pm and 3:30 pm. In addition to the campus tour, the Visitors Center will facilitate appointments for guests with admissions counselors, faculty and any area of interest to the prospective student. The visitation also includes an optional financial aid presentation in the Visitors Center. Timeline: Ongoing throughout calendar year. B. Preview Day Campus Visitation Program - Nine campus visitation Preview Days have been scheduled for the 2003/2004 academic year as follows: Friday, October 17, 2003 2
Tuesday, October 21, 2003 Friday, November 7, 2003 Friday, November 21, 2003 Friday, January 30, 2004 Monday, February 16, 2004 Friday, February 27, 2004 Friday March 26, 2004 Friday, April 30, 2004 Preview Day programs include presentations on admission, financial aid, and housing; a student panel and a parent panel, an academic departmental visit, lunch in a residence hall, a campus tour lead by student ambassadors and an opportunity to observe a UNC class. Timeline: October 17, 2003 through April 30, 2004. C. Host a Futures Day Program On October 21, 2003, numerous high schools will provide high school seniors an opportunity to visit college campuses. For students who elect to visit UNC, the UNC Futures Day format is similar to a Preview Day. Timeline: October 21, 2003 D. Junior Day Programs Two UNC Junior Day programs have been scheduled for the spring of 2004. Friday, March 5 Preview Day for Juniors Friday, April 16 Junior Day/ACT Preparation Workshop The Junior Day programs invite high school juniors and their parents to visit the campus and take part in college selection and preparation activities. The April 16 program will include a simulated ACT test and informational sessions for the juniors and their parents. Timeline: March 5 and April 16, 2004 E. Host and Coordinate Scholars Day A Scholars Day has been scheduled for April 2, 2004 in conjunction with Academic Excellence Week. High school seniors, who have been admitted with a Freshman Provost Scholarship award for fall 2004, and their parents, will be invited. Timeline: April 2, 2004 F. Coordination of Student Telecounseling Program - Thirty student ambassadors are employed and trained to make evening telecounseling contacts to students who are either prospects or applicants to UNC. Applicant calls placed are scheduled and programmed by the EMAS software to occur at a specific point in the student's admission process. Calls are placed on the average of four nights per week from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm. A graduate assistant supervises the telecounselors on a nightly basis. In addition to the telecounseling responsibility, student ambassadors also serve in campus visitation activities. Timeline: Ongoing throughout calendar year. G. Host a high school counselor Summer Institute campus visitation day for fifty high school counselors who are participating in a College Board sponsored college campus tour 3
program. Campus information and materials are provided with a campus tour and complimentary lunch. Timeline: July, 2004. H. Attend Student Financial Resources at Financial Aid Help Night Programs - Accompany Office of Student Financial Resources Staff to represent the Office of Admissions at the financial aid Help Night programs. Timeline: Mid-January - Early February 2004. I. Promote the "First-App UNC" Program - This early application program permits 2003/04 high school juniors to apply for admission to UNC during the spring semester of the junior year. Timeline: Spring 2004 semester up to July 1, 2004. J. Further Develop/Refine Use of Alumni in Recruitment Process Utilize alumni who have recently graduated from UNC and are living in Hawaii to assist in the recruitment process in Hawaii. Estimated cost: Stipend of $50 paid to each alum who represents UNC at a college fair program. Timeline: Fall 2003/Spring 2004 college fair programs. III. Transfer Student Recruitment A. Transfer In-State Student Recruitment Travel 1. Conduct visitations to each of the 15 Colorado community colleges regularly throughout the calendar year. Monthly or bi-monthly visits will occur to the following main feeder schools plus branch campuses: Aims Community College (Greeley, Loveland and Ft. Lupton campuses) Arapahoe Community College Community College of Aurora Community College of Denver Front Range Community College (Westminster and Ft. IV. On-Campus Transfer Student Recruitment A. Host Transfer Student Campus Visitation Days - Transfer students will be invited to visit the campus in the spring semester on the same days as the freshman Preview Day programs. In addition to the freshman program, there will be a parallel visitation day program for transfer students with issues of interest to a transfer student addressed. Timeline: February, March and April 2004. B. Maintain "Transfer Stop" Service Concept in Office of Admissions - Offer a transfer admissions service policy, which will provide an immediate assessment of transferable credits, unofficial transcript evaluation and an on-the-spot admission decision for all walk-in applicants with a complete file. C. Purchase Advertisements in Selected Colorado Community College Newspapers - The UNC advertisements would promote the Transfer Provost Scholarship program. Timeline: Spring 2004 semester. D. Host Transfer Community College Advisory Board Meetings - Hold meetings of UNC Transfer Community College Advisory Board on the UNC campus to gain insights in the transfer student market and obtain reactions to transfer student recruitment efforts undertaken by UNC. A UNC Admissions representative will conduct seven application days in the Denver area high schools with a high representation of minority students. d.
