// A NEW BEGINNING... // A GREAT HERITAGE Turing House opened in September 2015 and is a brand new secondary school for Richmond upon Thames, catering for boys and girls aged 11-18. It is a school for our whole community, established by local parents with the support of an outstanding educational trust, RET. At Turing House there is a special focus on Science and Engineering. We are the only coeducational school in the local area with these specialisms, subjects that have been identified by the government and employers as vitally important to the 21st century economy and job opportunities for young people. Our students take part in a range of projects including Jaguar Maths in Motion, Maths Challenge, Salters Chemistry Festival and the EEP Robotics Challenge. Our vision is for an outstanding and inclusive school, with a clear focus on high performance, instilling good behaviour and attitudes towards others as the basis for excellence at every stage of school life. Our school will enable children from all backgrounds to make exceptional progress. We ve named our school Turing House in honour of the inspirational mathematician and scientist Alan Turing. After his key role in cracking the German Enigma Code during the Second World War, he moved to Hampton and worked at Teddington s National Physical Laboratory, where he began his ground breaking work developing the earliest modern computers. By honouring and celebrating his achievements we aim to reflect a culture of possibility in our school, a school where staff and students are inspired to aim high, think creatively and achieve their full potential. We were delighted that his niece, Shuna Hunt, officially opened our school in 2015. It will attract and retain outstanding staff and support them to inspire our pupils. Turing House: Sometimes it is the people no-one imagines anything of who do the things that no-one can imagine. Attributed to Alan Turing Supports all students to achieve their academic and social potential Provides a special focus on science, engineering, and music Provides a family environment in which staff know each of the children by name Encourages parental engagement Encourages responsibility for self and others Is a resource for the local community

Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. William Butler Yeats // MY VISION FOR TURING HOUSE Education is a life-long Turing House is well-organised, Everyone at Turing House is pursuit of knowledge, well-disciplined, dynamic and committed to comprehensive understanding and skills forward-looking a caring education and is determined and secondary schools play a institution with teaching and to realise the full potential critical role in this process. learning at the heart of its of every student within a decision making processes. context of equal value and To succeed, schools must Student involvement in equal opportunity literally: be integral parts of the evaluating the success of what every child matters. We are aiming to make it five! Colin Mackinlay Colin Mackinlay Headteacher // WHY CHOOSE US? Excellent teaching: All candidates for teaching posts are required to demonstrate their skill in the classroom with their lessons observed by experienced Ofsted-trained staff. Only those who teach good or outstanding lessons are selected. Strong Leadership and management: Standards and scrutiny are our watchwords and we apply them not only to our recruitment process but also to the development of our inspirational, broad and balanced curriculum. We know that outstanding teaching promotes outstanding learning and we continuously develop our staff. Our teachers are all part of RET-wide Subject Networks, led by specialist advisers. These networks support teachers professional development and the dissemination of best practice between all five schools. Great Outcomes: Students have done exceptionally well in their first years at Turing House, not just in their rates of progress in the classroom but in their extra-curricular, music and sporting participation and achievements. Behaviour is exemplary. Personal Development: through character education and attention to individual needs we ensure that our students are well prepared for adulthood and citizenship in modern Britain.

// AN INSPIRING CURRICULUM BROAD & BALANCED We offer an expertly delivered, high quality, inspirational curriculum, drawing on best practice from independent and state schools nationally. We support all students to achieve their greatest potential, both academically and as creative, caring and responsible future adults. Our curriculum is broad and balanced and meets the needs of the full range of our students, developing them intellectually, socially, culturally, spiritually and morally. All paths will develop our students critical thinking skills and empower them as individuals, citizens and employees. In common with the other schools in the Trust, our learning is planned to develop the skills and embed the knowledge required for success at GCSE and beyond. Many of our Year 7 and 8 students are working at GCSE level in English and maths already. // A FOCUS ON MUSIC Music is a universal language throughout our school, promoting inclusion, confidence and self-esteem. Students have regular sustained opportunities to engage with music, whether through learning an instrument, taking part in performance opportunities, exploring music technology, or managing music and arts projects. We use music across the curriculum as an inspirational way to introduce new concepts and cultures to students. Richmond Borough has a rich musical heritage. We celebrate and build on this to inspire and motivate our students. The skills learnt and fostered in music education benefit the whole school, enhancing concentration, focus, teamwork and well-being. All students are encouraged to learn a musical instrument and the quality and level of participation in our musical events each term is very high. // SPECIALISM: SCIENCE & ENGINEERING STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education creates critical thinkers and increases science literacy. It helps students to be curious, ask questions and make connections as to why the world exists as it does. We believe the skills developed through studying STEM subjects: problem solving; innovation; logical thinking and collaboration are of benefit to all students in whatever career path they choose. We enhance our core science curriculum with exciting and inspiring activities for our students including practical workshops, design challenges and field trips. Students also have opportunities to develop their science communication skills, sharing their enthusiasm for STEM through work with ambassadors from NPL, BP and other organisations.

// SKILLS FOR LIFE Our teachers are trained to make the most of every possible opportunity to develop students literacy, numeracy and critical thinking skills to support them in their studies and prepare them for the world of work. We offer additional courses and extracurricular activities related to our specialist subjects and are forming partnerships with other organisations as well as local schools and colleges, to further broaden that provision. Debates and voting on topical moral and social issues are a weekly activity for all students and many are involved in community projects. // TEACHING & LEARNING We recognise that all students who come to our school are unique, so attention to the individual s educational development, needs and success is fundamental. There are personalised pathways to suit the learning needs of individuals. Students are encouraged to share responsibility for their own learning so that they know the next steps to take to be successful. They are challenged in their lessons, with work appropriate to the full range of ability levels. Homework Club runs from Monday to Thursday every week, so students can get help when they need it and finish their work before leaving for home. The vast majority of students who are able to achieve the English Baccalaureate will follow a pathway that enables this, but there will always be flexibility to adapt pathways for individuals with particular talents, gifts or progression routes. For the minority of students for whom an English Baccalaureate or equivalent pathway is an unrealistic aspiration, we will provide an alternative range of courses and options, enabling every student to gain a sense of selfworth and achievement.

// ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES Enrichment of the curriculum in and beyond the classroom is an extremely important part of our provision. Each subject area organises additional activities to enhance the learning of students that take place both during and after the school day as well as trips and visits (for example the National Space Centre, theatre trips, Bushcraft, Thames Young Mariners and a cultural and activity trip to Spain). We offer a huge range of after-school clubs, most of which are free to access. All students are encourage to participate in at least one activity per week and many take part in two or three, some as many as 8! 60% of students have represented the school in sporting competitions this year. After-school clubs and extracurricular activities include: A full programme of sports with many teams competing against other schools. See the Fixtures page on our website for match reports! Outside trips and visits Visits to the school by authors, artists and other specialists Regular music and drama performances for parents and the wider community There are opportunities for all students to learn and practise a musical instrument. As part of the local family of schools we are developing direct links with other local secondary and primary schools, working in partnership to provide joint enrichment activities, and allowing the wider community to benefit from our specialisms. To find out more about life at Turing House visit our website to read our weekly newsletters. // THE POWER OF EXPERIENCE Turing House School is the result of a successful partnership forged between local parents and our academy sponsor, Russell Education Trust. RET is an academy trust with five secondary schools all of which are growing, like Turing House, from Year 7 upwards. RET schools benefit from expert support from RET advisers and fruitful partnerships across our high-achieving schools. The first four schools together have the highest average inspection grades of any secondary school Multi Academy Trust. All have been judged either Outstanding or Good with outstanding features by Ofsted. // COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS We believe schools should be at the heart of their communities. Eventually we would like our school premises to become a learning hub, open until late into the evening, offering a broad range of clubs and courses for people of all ages. Our regular community CoderDojo events are a first step in this direction. We aim to be a first-choice community school not just for parents and students, but also for those who work with us, including future staff, suppliers and external partners. We have developed close links with our neighbouring primary schools, so that potential students and their families can get to know us. Each year we perform our drama production to Year 5 students from nearby schools. We engage with the community through student participation in initiatives such as the Duke of Edinburgh s Award scheme, and our own Headteacher s Challenge, as well as embedded community service as part of the curriculum itself. Through this engagement we have developed well-organised and fruitful relationships with local community groups such as the Teddington Society and Rotary Club.
