Kali Nikitas, Chair, Communication Arts Department, Otis College of Art and Design Nikitas is a City of Inglewood resident and Arts Commissioner. As Commissioner, she advises City Council Members and the Parks, Recreation, and Library Services Department and about the arts and cultural needs of the community. She has been a juror for numerous exhibitions in the United States and Latin America. 3

Construction Phase Artworks Metro Art has a strong track record of producing temporary artworks to help mitigate visual impacts during transit project construction phases. Previous examples include the Gold Line Eastside Extension and the Red Line station sites through Hollywood and North Hollywood. From June 2015 through January 2016, Metro Art, in conjunction with artworxla and lead artist Michael Alvarez, hosted workshops along the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project at Lula Washington Dance Theater, KAOS Network, the Inglewood Center for Spiritual Living and Inglewood High. The workshops provided an opportunity for students to learn about sketching, murals and pictograms in order to represent their community through art. For inspiration, the students started with a walking tour around each future mural s location and listened to community leaders insights on the surrounding neighborhood s history and future. Banners have been installed at the following sites: Expo/Crenshaw (West facing Construction Wall) The banners at the site of the new station recognize notable figures such as Mayor Tom Bradley, Nina Revoyr and Lula Washington and the neighborhood s strong African American and Japanese American heritage. Leimert Park (Crenshaw Blvd at 43 rd Place) The banners installed at the intersection of Crenshaw and Vernon celebrate neighborhood cultural icons such as Biddy Mason, Billy Higgins, the Vision Theater, Leimert Park drum circle and the World Stage. Inglewood (along Florence Avenue between La Brea Avenue and Prairie Avenue) The banners installed along Florence Avenue feature neighborhood cultural icons such as Helen Lundberg s History of Transportation Mural, The Centinela Adobe, the Forum, the Hollywood Park Racetrack, and the ever popular Randy s Donuts, with a special nod to Casey Veggies, who is a talented rapper and Inglewood High School alumnus. 4

Southwest Maintenance Yard The future facility will service the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project and the Green Line. It will include a site specific, integrated artwork. Metro Art is currently developing the artwork opportunity and will have a community engagement component. Artists interested in Metro Art opportunities should sign up for our email list. Visit metro.net/art and click on Artist Opportunities. 6

Through the Eyes of Artists In the tradition of celebrating transportation through colorful travel destination posters, Metro commissions a diverse range of Los Angeles artists to create original artworks for the Through the Eyes of Artists posters series. The purpose of the series is to increase ridership by encouraging the public to access the Metro system and enjoy traveling to the many neighborhoods within Los Angeles County. The posters are displayed on board Metro trains and buses. Artists Sam Pace and Wakana Kimura created posters for Leimert Park and Inglewood and have signed free copies of their posters at community events. There will be an upcoming artist opportunity to create a Crenshaw neighborhood poster. Sam Pace s poster visually evokes the Leimert Park community as a haven for jazz, hip-hop, blues, poetry, artwork and great soul food. I wanted to capture this unique area of Los Angeles it s a Mecca for African American culture, and I feel that it s time to share it with the rest the world. In Wakana Kimura s poster for Inglewood, a kaleidoscope of frenetic activity bursts over the racetrack, airport and beach. The action is amplified through a variety of color, pattern and media, as the artist compiles images of the area s defining characteristics and landmarks. "I see an excitement in the city that is rooted in the circle: the donut, a camera lens, the eclipse, the race track and the airplane's flight path." 7

Metro Art Presents Metro Art Presents showcases arts and cultural programs at historic Union Station. The program proudly shares the talents of artists from all over LA County, including musicians from the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project area. The all ages programming is designed to creatively activate the landmark station, engage diverse Los Angeles communities and attract new riders.
