Students develop talents and skills in a safe and equitable environment. The school community; including students, parents, staff and alumni, work diligently to maintain a tradition of excellence in academics, athletics and the arts. Applewood Heights offers a robust mainstream program in all curricular areas, for all grades, including the French Immersion program. Advanced Placement (AP) students can enrich their learning opportunities in the areas of Science, Math, History and French. Applewood Heights offers a Regional Sports Program (RSP) open to all eligible students in Peel. Applications allow entry at the end of Grade 8. RSP students will participate in physical education all year and also engage in leadership opportunities within the school and neighbouring community. Students may choose to complete a SHSM (Specialist High Skills Major) in Sports. SHSM students in Grades 11 and 12 are engaged in a program that provides focused courses on sports and leadership combined with additional sector certifications and experiences that are linked to post-secondary plans. The school s extracurricular program offers students a complete range of athletic teams, music groups and a variety of clubs and organizations in which to get involved.

SPORTS SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR (SHSM) Our SHSM program in Sports at Applewood Heights SS has a focus on personal development, interpersonal skills and leadership. All students will gain knowledge about physical fitness and health education, kinesiology, recreation and leisure activities. The in-school program consists of a bundle of courses in each of the areas which will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance student learning. Students will be involved in reach ahead experiences and exposure to post-secondary institutions such as the University of Waterloo as well as Humber and Sheridan Colleges. Students will also have an opportunity for job shadowing and job twinning experiences. There will be sector recognized certifications in WHMIS, AED, First Aid, CPR, as well as coaching (NCCP), High Five, taping and wrapping. In order to complete an SHSM in Sports, students 1. Complete a bundle of 9 specific courses (see chart below); 2. Complete Sector Certifications and/or training programs; 3. Participate in experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector (e.g. co-op work experience, job shadowing, job twinning); 4. Learn and document the industry Essential Skills and work habits using the Ontario Skills Passport; 5. Gain Reach Ahead experience connected to the student s post-secondary plans.
