April 15, 2016 Dear Parents and Senior Students, We are looking forward to a successful graduation with many enjoyable Senior activities planned. Below is a condensed list of important graduation dates to keep in mind as well as a question and answer section to address many of the most commonly asked questions we receive during this time of year. Important Senior Dates: Wednesday April 20 nd Panoramic Picture at 11:30 a.m. Friday April 22 nd Application deadline for Graduation Speakers Friday April 29 th Graduation Speech auditions (applicant finalist only) Tuesday May 3 rd All outside East High make-up & Independent Study credit is due Thursday May 12 th Jostens delivery of caps and gowns at lunch (small gym) Thursday May 12 th Last day to enroll in Credit Recovery if make-up credit is needed Wednesday May 18 th Senior Awards Night - 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium Wed-Thurs May 23-May 26Final Exams Tuesday May 24 th Final deadline to submit all East High sponsored Credit Recovery work Wednesday May 25 th Textbooks, Fees/Fines, and Detentions due Thursday June 2 nd Mandatory Graduation Rehearsal 8:00 a.m.- 10:00 a.m. in the Auditorium Friday June 3 rd Graduation Day at Vivint Smart Home Arena Graduation - Students arrive by 12:30 p.m. at Vivint Smart Home Arena. Commencement Exercises begin at 1:00 p.m. Island Photography will be taking graduation photos for purchase. Graduation Party sponsored by PTSA Classic Fun Center, buses will leave from East at 9:15 p.m. for the activity. Buses will return around 1:30 a.m. after the activity to both East and Glendale Middle. We hope that the above information is helpful to you. QUESTION/ANSWER SHEET: Below you will find information concerning Graduation, the Senior Awards Ceremony and other Senior Activity items: 1) WHAT INFORMATION DO I NEED FOR SENIOR AWARDS CEREMONY? When: Tuesday, May 18, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. Where: East High School Auditorium Who: All seniors, parents, and faculty members. Invitations will be mailed out to students receiving awards or recognition. What: The students are the main part of the program. Awards will be presented and it should be an outstanding evening for all seniors and their parents. 2) WHEN IS THE MANDATORY REHEARSAL FOR THE GRADUATION EXERCISES? June 2 nd from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 am in the Auditorium. All graduating students MUST attend and participate in this rehearsal! Seating and procession arrangements will be made at this time. If you have applied to a university, college or for the Regent Scholarship, for example, you are required to send an official end-of-year transcript to verify graduation. Transcripts request forms are available in the Counseling Center or you may fill out a form at the graduation rehearsal. Please bring $1.00 per official transcript or pay the treasurer and bring your receipt. 3) WHAT INFORMATION DO I NEED FOR THE GRADUATION CEREMONY? When: Friday, June 3 rd, 2016. Commencement exercises will begin at 1:00 p.m. Students must be assembled at Vivint Smart Home Arena by 12:30 p.m. to prepare for the graduation exercises. Doors will open for the audience at 12:30 p.m. Where: Vivint Smart Home Arena 301 W. South Temple. 4) WHERE CAN I GET TICKETS? With graduation at the Energy Solutions Arena, tickets are not necessary. All are welcome. 5) WHO WILL GRADUATE? Students who have successfully completed the graduation requirements of East High School, the Salt Lake City Board of Education and the Utah State Office of Education will graduate and participate in graduation exercises. This includes completing academics, testing requirements and clearing all fees and fines, etc. If you have questions concerning your graduation status, you should contact your counselor immediately. 6) WHEN WILL I KNOW IF I WILL GRADUATE? The majority of the seniors know now if they are on track to graduate. Some seniors are still in the process of completing requirements; therefore, it may be late in the term before they know for certain. If you have any concerns about your graduation status, please contact your counselor immediately at (801) 584-2923. 2

The final date to enroll in After School Credit Recovery makeup is May 12 th. THERE are NO EXCEPTIONS! If you need a class to graduate you must see your counselor to make arrangements for make-up work. 7) WHAT SPECIAL DIPLOMAS OR RECOGNITIONS WILL BE GIVEN? Standard Diploma: Students who earn 24 units of credit (including the specific required credits) in grades 9-12. Certificate of Enriched Curriculum: Recognition is given for students who have earned the requirements in grades 9-12 and enrolled in a more rigorous schedule. These students will be identified on the graduation program and will also receive a special gold tassel for the graduation ceremonies. Honors Diploma: This special diploma is for students who have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher through semester one of grade 12. These students will receive a special engraved diploma and will wear a gold honor cord during the graduation ceremonies. These cords will be given to students when they pick up their caps and gowns. National Honors Society: Recognized by blue & gold cords. CTE Scholars: Students who have completed a CTE course and passed the Utah State Skill Certification Test for that course will receive a red & white cord from the CTE Center. 8) WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR MAKING UP CREDIT FOR GRADUATION? Any credit earned outside of East High must be submitted to our Registrar no later than May 3 rd. Make-up credit through Extended Learning Opp and Gear up is due no later than May 24 th. 9) WHO WILL SPEAK AT GRADUATION? If a graduating student wants to speak at graduation they must submit their name no later than April 22 nd to Barbara Matkin in the Student Service Center. The topic selected by the Senior class is I can t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination. By Jimmy Dean They will then have until April 22 nd to write their speech. The students will be notified of a time that they will audition beginning at 2:45 p.m. on April 29 th. These students must be on track to graduate in order to apply to be a graduation speaker. 10) WHO MAY BE RECOGNIZED (WALK) IN THE GRADUATION EXERCISE? Only seniors who have been academically cleared by their counselor and financially cleared by the treasurer are able to receive their cap and gown and walk during the graduation exercises at the Energy Solutions Arena. The deadline for clearance is May 25 th. 11) WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES FOR STUDENT MISCONDUCT? Any student who is disruptive or who violates any district or school policy/procedure before/during the graduation rehearsal or the ceremony may jeopardize their participation in the graduation ceremony. 3

12) WHERE DO I PICK UP MY CAP AND GOWN? Jostens will be at school to distribute Caps and Gowns to all students who are cleared on May 12 th. Bring your receipt and student ID! If you are unable to pick up your cap and gown at this time, your parents or a classmate may do so with your receipt. If you have not yet ordered your cap and gown, do so immediately by contacting Jostens at (801) 467-6968. 13) ARE ALL STUDENTS REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GRADUATION EXERCISES? No, it is optional to participate. However, if you do not participate, you will not get your diploma until Monday 6 th. If you choose not to participate notify Carolyn Smith in the Counseling Center, then you may pick up your diploma from her any time after graduation day. 14) WHAT IS THE DRESS STANDARD FOR THE GRADUATION EXERCISES? As a minimum standard we recommend dress slacks with a white dress shirt and tie or dress with low-heeled shoes. To keep with tradition, boys will wear the red graduation gowns; girls will wear the white graduation gowns. Dress shoes are preferred. Avoid wearing flip-flops, platform or high- heeled shoes for safety reasons. Decorating your cap is forbidden and may be cause for you to be removed from the graduation ceremony. 15) WHAT DO I RECEIVE FROM THE OFFICIALS IN THE GRADUATION PROCESSION? You will receive a 2016 red diploma cover. 16) WHEN WILL I GET MY DIPLOMA? After the program has ended, you will turn in your gown to representatives from Jostens who will give you a ticket indicating your clearance. You will receive more instructions during Graduation practice. 17) WILL THERE BE A GRADUATION PARTY? The PTSA will sponsor a party for the graduating senior at Classic Fun Center. This event will last from 9:15 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. All students MUST take the bus from East High to Classic Fun Center. This activity is parent supervised-drug & alcohol free-sponsored by East High PTSA. The enclosed flyer has more information. Report Your Scholarships! Students, if you have received any scholarships, please report them to Alisa Kearl, Scholarship Coordinator in the Counseling Center. We need to keep an accurate report of all scholarships and awards for each year. This report goes to the district to show what an awesome school we are and how brilliant our student body is. This includes all athletic, leadership, service, diversity, academic, private, and college scholarships as well as essay, math and science contests etc. We will celebrate your accomplishments at the Awards Night on May 18 th, 2016. Your effort is much appreciated as self-reporting is often our only means of discovery.. 4
