The Sheraton Sixth Form The Sheraton Building of Abbey Hill Academy is the state of the art facility that supports the learning of a broad range of Post-16 students including those with severe and moderate learning difficulties, students on the autistic spectrum. Support for these students is based on three distinct curriculum models, which provide a broad and varied learning experience and opportunities designed for different ranges of ability and need. levels *Personal Progress (Groups 1, 2 and 3) for those students working at Entry Level 1 or below. *Entry Level Certificates (Groups 4 & 5) for those students working at Entry Level 1 3. *GCSE & Level 1 / 2 s for those students who are consistently working above Entry 3 and will cope, with support, quite a demanding curriculum. Post 16 programme of Study The governments new programme of study for 16-19 year requires that post 16 provisions offer the following Higher level of study than the students prior attainment. Experience of vocational options. Continued teaching of Maths and English to improve students levels. Opportunity of a work experience or other work related learning. This booklet will hopefully help provide some information regarding the vocational options that are offered at the Sheraton Sixth form so that the students can make informed choices. For new students to the Sixth form there will also be the opportunity to attend an option afternoon at a later date where students, parents and carers can discuss the options in more detail with the teaching staff.
CEIAG & Contacts What are the Choices? Students will have the opportunity to make two option choices for a Friday. One for the morning slot and one for the afternoon. All courses are a year long, so new options can be picked in the second year. Sport and Fitness Sport and Fitness Award The Sports and Fitness Short Course accredits up to 60 hours of involvement in various sporting activities, within the following areas: - Skills and participation - Coaching - Fitness - Sports study The course is both practical and theoretical. Practical elements include taking part in a number of different activities Basketball, Football, Handball, Tennis, Fitness training and Circuit training. It also involves learning how to do skills in a sport (e.g. a Lay-up in Basketball) as well as learning rules of a game and refereeing games. Theory sessions will focus on diet and nutrition, sport from another country, sporting issues and a major sporting competition e.g. the World Cup. Developing a range of sporting skills, working as part of a team, learning the rules of a game and carrying out independent sport-related research tasks. The course does require some level of personal fitness, but most Importantly, it needs students to be committed and enthusiastic about the option. ASDAN Sports and Fitness Award. Introduction to Hair Introduction to Hair Learners will have the opportunity to acquire skills, knowledge and understanding of the Hair and Beauty Industry through the practical activities. Learners will be able to develop their communication skills and their employability skills in areas such as time management and teamwork. Throughout the course, students undergo training in hair care, client care and preparation and health and safety. The units also cover personal presentation and record-keeping. This vocational subject incorporates manual and technical skills required in the hair care industry. In addition to this students will also develop their employability skills in this area such as time management and team work. Hospitality and Catering Hospitality and Catering This course gives learners a general introduction to the hospitality industry including: food preparation and cooking, food and drink services, accommodation services and guest services. This is a very practical course involving lots of cooking. You will learn new skills in the kitchen and also find out about the Hospitality industry. Practical cooking skills; some Maths skills (weighing and measuring); planning; knowledge of the hospitality industry; understanding of customer service. Students who have an interest in working in the hospitality and catering industry. Students will need to understand written instructions and be able to write clearly. John Muir Award JOHN MUIR TRUST The John Muir Trust is a charity that aims to make sure that wild places are valued by all sectors of society and wild land is protected throughout the United Kingdom It was set up in 1983, and promotes Muir s message by buying and sensitively managing key areas of wild land, and campaigning to safeguard them. The John Muir Award was launched by the trust in 1997 as its main educational initiative. The John Muir Award is an environmental award that encourages people of all backgrounds to connect, enjoy and care for wild places. The Award is not competitive but should challenge each participant. Taking part will develop an understating of, and responsibility for, a chosen wild place or places. Workshop BSC Workplace hazard awareness This qualification is for people aged between 14 and 19, who are preparing to enter the workplace. Learners will find out about health and safety, safety signs, personal protective equipment and the responsibilities of employers and employees. Assessment is via an on-line test and a simple portfolio of evidence. The workshop curriculum is a personalised learning programme in the many skills associated with the world of work. In addition to making and finishing jobs, groups are able to order, shop and collect materials as well as deliver finished products. Underlying the workplace training are health and safety, knowing your rights and other everyday issues in the world of work. Students will learn and understand the production process, working drawings, following instructions and safely using a range of tools and machinery. Students who enjoy developing their practical skills and may go on to construction based employment. Students who enjoy practical work and have an interest in making. Team Building Team building is all about incorporating outdoor and adventurous activities with team tasks aimed at developing your self confidence, communication, confidence and skills for working with others. The objective of the option is to develop skill and ability to work as a member of a team in activities that are relevant to work and leisure in the outdoor environment: Activities may include: Bouldering, orienteering, indoor and outdoor climbing, canoeing, using and understanding maps, using a compass to find your way, following and creating trails in school grounds and beyond, bush craft skills, team tasks, leadership skills, First Aid. Links with Mountain Rescue Teamwork, communication, organisation Much of the option will be outside so students will need to be suitably dressed. Horticulture Horticulture This course will suit you if you're just starting out and want a good basic understanding of the horticulture industry - enough to get your first job in the sector or move on to further study. Some examples of units you might cover include: Care for a planted area Prepare soil and apply an organic mulch Prepare and plant a hanging basket Use a leaf-litter blower Identify weeds. This Level 1 course will give the students the opportunity to build on and develop their Horticulture skills. The award consists of various units with a focus on practical skills; a portfolio of evidence is built up over the programme as there is no end-of- year exam. If you have enjoyed the Sheraton Science course, this could be the next step for you! Develop a range of skills needed for the care, planting and growing of plants, working as part of a team, carrying out tasks with a knowledge of Health and Safety guidelines To access this course, ideally you would already have an Entry level 3 gained from the Sheraton Science department. International Award International Award The ASDAN International award offers students the opportunity to learn about all aspects of Internationalism. It opens up the world around us and helps develop an understanding about people and places. Learning how to communicate the basics in a new language (Spanish). Preparing foreign foods. Interviewing people about their international experiences. Completing research about a chosen country overseas. Understanding the value of cultural diversity. Learning about important global issues such as the refugee crisis. Working as a team to develop a Fair Trade enterprise. Child Development Child Development Three levels of award are available: Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3. To be eligible for an award, candidates submit for assessment and moderation evidence from four component units. Everything from pre-conceptual care to the development of a child to the age of five years is covered. Students will learn a range of practical skills and the theory behind taking care of a child. Photography Photography This is the ideal qualification for creative learners who enjoy taking photographs and learning new skills with digital modification. You will develop many photographic & editing skills throughout this course You will complete 2 assignments which will give you the opportunity to show evidence of camera skills in recording images and digital image manipulation skills, creating images that have been substantially modified for visual effect. Presentation skills in producing a professional portfolio of evidence,. Using equipment such as the cameras, Photo-Plus X6 editing suite, studio backdrop & lighting.
