Elkhorn High School 1401 Veterans Drive Elkhorn, NE 68022 (402) 289-4239 March 31, 2017 Dear Parents and Seniors, On May 21 at 4:00 p.m., seniors will be graduating from Elkhorn High School. In preparation for this day, the following summarizes many of the conditions that must be met as well as the events that will take place during the next few weeks. Graduation Requirements: All requirements (courses and credit hours) must be completed before the student participates in the graduation ceremonies. Since most seniors need their present English course, it is especially important that this obligation be met. All students should double check on any incomplete work. Check-Out: Seniors will be issued a check-out slip on Tuesday, May 16. The check-out slip must be signed by each student s classroom teachers, and returned when you pick up your cap and gown on Wednesday, May 17. All fines and/or dues must be paid in full and all equipment must be returned before checkout slips will be signed. This procedure is the only assurance that all senior obligations have been fulfilled. Last Day of Classes: The last official day for seniors is Wednesday, May 17. Students may be required to attend after this date, until check out procedures have been satisfactorily completed. Seniors will take finals periods 5 7 on Tuesday, May 16 and periods 1 4 on Wednesday, May 17. At the conclusion of 4 th period on Wednesday, students will participate in graduation rehearsal. At the successful completion of rehearsal (approximately 2:00), caps and gowns will be distributed and students will be dismissed. Students who have not ordered and paid for a cap and gown are urged to do so as soon as possible. Gown arrangements can be completed through Jostens/School Traditions by calling (402) 733-0300. No Camping, Tents or Overnights on EHS Campus: Historically, twenty to thirty seniors have set up camp and stayed overnight the Tuesday night of the seniors last week and rolled into Wednesday s finals sleep deprived and not very focused on their last Wednesday of high school. Students have four finals and a graduation rehearsal to accomplish and honor s night that evening; therefore, it would be in their best interests to sleep at their homes rather than on the EHS campus. I will ask Omaha Police to patrol our campus during the nights this week so that students responsibly follow the city curfew, trespassing ordinances which may diminish vandalism to property or senior pranks.

Attendance: Absences are not encouraged before the final day. Any senior skips will be treated as unexcused absences. In addition, please be proactive with communications related to the Elkhorn High School attendance policy if a student has exceeded 8 excused absences or 2 unexcused absences during the last semester. Please direct questions regarding attendance to Mr. Ford. Honors Night: Honors night will be held at Elkhorn High School in the auditorium on Wednesday, May 17 at 7:00 p.m. At this time, teachers will recognize several students for outstanding achievement and special honors. Parents are cordially invited to attend this event. Commencement: All graduating seniors are expected to participate in the commencement exercises. The ceremony will be held at 4:00 p.m. in the Elkhorn High School gymnasium. Front doors will open at 2:00 p.m. All seniors will meet at 3:00 p.m. in the auxiliary gym. Graduation Honors: Honor Cord: Seniors earning a 3.25 cumulative GPA at the end of senior year will be recognized as graduating with honors and will receive a gold cord to wear at the ceremony. National Honors Society: NHS seniors in good standing will be recognized at graduation and will wear an NHS stole at the graduation ceremony. Top 5%: Seniors ranked in the top 5% of the class will be recognized during graduation. EHS does not recognize a class valedictorian. ACHIEVE: EPS Foundation recognizes seniors who engage in academically rigorous coursework while maintaining balance in other areas within the school and community. Seniors wear recognition cords at graduation. Visit www.elkhornfoundation.org for criteria and application. Application deadline is Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 3:30 EHS Counseling Center. Academic Letter: Seniors earning a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 at the end of 8 semesters will receive an academic letter certificate with their diploma. Graduation Ceremony: Graduation is an honorable and respectful academic ceremony. Decorative jewelry, tape, or painted signs/symbols should not be displayed on either the cap or gown. Party-like celebrating during the ceremony is not encouraged because it detracts from honoring graduates. Commencement Video: Mid-America Video Images will be recording the ceremony and will have a display set up in the commons area the day of graduation. An order form is enclosed. Commencement Photos: Dwyer Photography has been selected again to photograph this year s graduation ceremony. Dwyer s will photograph the entire class on Sunday and each graduate as they receive their diploma at the graduation ceremony. Photographs will be available for purchase at graduation and on the web. An order form is enclosed. Seating: In addition to the gymnasium, an additional 750 seats will be available in the auditorium with a multi-camera, live video feed. Safe Celebrations: Graduation is a special time for seniors and their families. Parent

encouragement is appreciated in helping seniors celebrate this occasion in a safe and responsible manner. Student cooperation and parent guidance will help make graduation a memorable experience for everyone. College Credits Earned: If a senior has earned college credits either through dual credit opportunities or AP test scores, the student is responsible for contacting the institution to have their transcript sent to the college they plan to attend. The high school transcript will not suffice. Contact the appropriate college for transcripts earned o Metropolitan Community College o University of Nebraska at Omaha o Nebraska Wesleyan University Contact www.collegeboard.com for AP test scores after all test scores are received. 2017 AP Exam Schedule Monday, May 1 8:00 AP Chemistry Monday, May 1 12:00 AP Psychology Tuesday, May 2 8:00 AP Spanish Language/Culture Wednes, May 3 8:00 AP English Literature/Composition (12 th grade) Thurs, May 4 8:00 AP Government/Politics Friday, May 5 8:00 AP US History Monday, May 8 8:00 AP Biology Tuesday, May 9 8:00 AP Calculus AB/BC Wednes, May 10 8:00 AP English Language/Composition (11 th grade) Thursday, May 11 8:00 AP World History Thursday, May 11 12:00 AP Statistics Thursday, May 14 8:00 AP World History In conclusion, the administrators, teachers and staff at Elkhorn High School wish to thank all parents for their continued support.
