St Michael s Grammar School Uniform 2017 Guidelines and Price List

The School Uniform The St Michael s School uniform enables us to develop a sense of community and belonging, define our identity and provide a link from one generation of students to the next. As custodians of this legacy, students are expected to wear the uniform with dignity, pride and respect. The present St Michael s uniform is contemporary and practical, and incorporates mix and match pieces to provide flexibility across a range of activities and conditions. Wearing the uniform eliminates any peer pressure associated with school dress, freeing students to express themselves through their character, behaviour and other personal qualities. This contributes to creating a positive learning environment. Furthermore, the uniform standards ensure students are adhering to workplace safety requirements, and impart skills related to maintaining professional dress in the workplace environment. Students should be mindful that while in school uniform they are the public face of the School, and should dress and behave accordingly. We ask for parents support in this area by complying with the uniform guidelines supplied. Compulsory uniform items are listed in a checklist within this document. General Appearance While in School uniform, whether at School or in public, students are required to adhere to the following: The Formal uniform must be worn in Terms 2 and 3 and at significant school events, as indicated from time to time by the School. The Summer uniform is worn in Terms 1 and 4 only. The Blazer is not worn with the Summer uniform. Note: The Summer uniform is optional in the senior years. Students may wear the Formal uniform without Blazer instead. Uniforms need to be clean, pressed and in good repair. Uniforms should be clearly and securely marked with the owner s name. The white shirt is to be tucked in at all times. Ties need to be worn neatly covering a fastened top button. Skirts, tunics and dresses should extend no higher than the knee. Trousers and slacks should break on the shoe and are worn with navy crew socks. Shorts are worn with navy knee-high socks. Black, polished-leather, hard-soled school shoes are to be in good repair, clean and worn laced or fastened. Black sneakers are not permitted in place of school shoes. Makeup and nail polish are not to be worn. The soft shell jacket may be worn on the School grounds, but does not replace the School blazer, for travelling to and from the School. Additional layers may be worn underneath the uniform for added warmth, however, these undergarments should be white or neutral in colour and completely hidden. Hair Colour should be natural in appearance. Hair should not be extreme in style. Girls hair, if longer than the collar, should be tied up and back neatly off the shoulders, with a red ribbon or red Alice band, or for Years 6-12, a red, navy or black elastic hair band. Boys hair should ideally be short, neat, out of the eyes and worn above the collar. Boys with a longer hairstyle must ensure it is tied up and back with a red, navy or black elastic hair band. Boys must be clean-shaven. Jewellery Students are permitted to wear one small, plain stud or sleeper earring placed in either or both earlobes. No other piercings are permitted. With the exception of watches and appropriate religious necklaces, items of jewellery are not to be worn. Prep to Year 6 specific Girls wear navy knee-high socks or navy tights with Formal uniform, and short white socks with Summer uniform. 2 Years 7 to 12 specific Girls wear short white socks or navy tights with the Formal skirt, and short white socks with Summer dress. During informal occasions at the School, the tie may be removed if the top button of the shirt is undone and the sleeves rolled up.

Co-curricular Uniform Co-curricular uniform items (e.g. snowsports vest, school team t-shirts) are not to be worn unless participating in the specific co-curricular activity. Sports and Physical Education Attire Students must change into the specified clothing before the start of all sports and physical education activities, and then change back into their regular school uniform at the next break. Specialist sports items (athletics shorts, bike shorts, singlets and swimwear) may only be worn during the relevant specialist activity. Students may not wear this attire around the School grounds or while travelling to and from School. Sports shoes are to be general-purpose and thick-soled, provide sufficient support, shock absorption and tread, and laced up; street shoes are not acceptable. Years 7 to 12 specific The optional sports vest may only be worn with the Sport and Physical Education uniform for added warmth/comfort. It is not appropriate to wear the vest with the school uniform or during sporting matches. Travelling to and from School Students must wear the correct School uniform when travelling to and from school. Students with Sports or Physical Education commitments before school or Period 1, may travel to school in the correct Sports and Physical Education Uniform, then change back into their school uniform at the next available break. Students with Sports or Physical Education commitments after school or Period 4, may travel home in the correct Sports and Physical Education Uniform. Students may only use the St Michael s school bag. School bags must be securely stored in the student s locker during the day and must not be brought into the classroom. Casual Clothes Clothing must be modest and respectful. Sports and Physical Education uniform rules still apply. Occupational Health and Safety regulations, such as closed shoes and tied-back hair for Technology and Science subjects, still apply. Uniform Payment Details Uniform items cannot be purchased through your St Michael s account. Parents need to establish an account with Bob Stewart Pty Ltd to facilitate uniform purchases. Application forms to set up a Bob Stewart account are available from the Uniform Shop. The Uniform Shop only accepts cheques made payable to Bob Stewart Pty Ltd. Second-hand Uniforms The Parent Community Association (PCA) coordinates second-hand uniforms which are sold through the Bob Stewart Uniform Shop. Volunteers manage the receiving, labelling and payment of the garments to owners once they are sold. Payment for items sold are made to your school account. For enquiries, email secondhanduniforms@stmichaels.vic.edu.au Special sale days will coincide with days when the Uniform Shop is open, to make available the full range of uniform items. These dates will be published via the news feed on SchoL. Uniforms can be dropped off throughout the school year at St Michael s main reception at Hewison House. A form (available at reception) must be completed with uniforms being dropped off. All blazers, winter skirts and tunics must be drycleaned before they will be accepted for sale. Garments must be presented on hangers with tags attached. All other items must be laundered and in good condition. Socks, school bags, caps, hats, bathers and shoes will not be accepted for sale. However, these items are much needed in offshore communities, so the PCA is happy to accept these items as a donation. All care will be taken but no responsibility will be accepted for lost or stolen items. Items not sold within 12 months (except blazers) may be donated to overseas charitable organisations. The PCA reserves the right to refuse any uniform item.
