Why Choose QSoE? OUR PROGRAMS We have been providing English language instruction since 1942. Small classes are offered with fully qualified instructors. English-Only rule allows for speaking and listening skills to improve more quickly. OUR UNIVERSITY Established by Royal Charter of Queen Victoria in 1841, Queen s University is one of Canada s oldest degree-granting institutions. Queen s is ranked fourth in Maclean s magazine s 23rd annual survey of Canadian universities. QSoE students have access to all facilities on Queen s campus, including libraries, sport facilities, and over 400 different student clubs. English Language Programs ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES Program Description An intensive language program that prepares students for university or college studies in English Offers intensive, integrated practice in all four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking Particular emphasis on the knowledge, skills and strategies essential for academic success Consists of six levels: Beginner, Elementary, Intermediate I and II, Advanced, and University Preparation English Proficiency Exam Waiver available for application to Queen s degree programs Program Length 22.5 hours of classroom instruction per week 12 weeks per level (full session) 6 weeks (half session) Session Dates Fall (September December) Winter (January April) Summer (May August) CANADIAN ENGLISH EXPERIENCE Program Description Provides students with an opportunity to learn English and to explore Canada Particular emphasis on developing speaking and listening skills using Canadian cultural content Class levels Beginner to High Intermediate Guided excursions and trips included in the program fee: Niagara Falls, Toronto, Montreal, ice skating on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, boat cruise in the Thousand Islands, and more Trips and activities depend on the season. Socio-Cultural Program Classroom learning enriched with regular socio-cultural activities and local excursions Full access to Queen s student clubs, services, and facilities, including the Athletics and Recreation Centre, allow for many opportunities to have fun and make new friends Queen s Student ID card allows for free access to the Kingston city buses Queen s degree students hired as socio-cultural monitors to lead the activities and trips ACTIVITIES AND TRIPS Full program of extra-curricular activities organized for the students in each session Examples include films, sports, baking, indoor and outdoor games, along with sightseeing, shopping, festivals, and visits to Kingston s many cultural and historic sites Optional trips to attractions outside of Kingston offered for an additional fee Examples include Toronto, Niagara Falls, Ottawa, Montreal, and Canada s Wonderland Accommodations RESIDENCE Located on Queen s campus, close to classes and university facilities Allows students to practice English with other students Meals included in the fee during the fall and winter sessions FOR DETAILS AND FEES queensu.ca/qsoe/accommodations HOMESTAY QSoE partners with the Canada Homestay Network to offer homestay to students Living with members of the Kingston community who share their homes with international students An excellent way to experience Canadian culture and practice English language Food for three meals per day included in the fees
QBridge English Language Pathway to Queen s University UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS QBridge is an English language pathway to Queen s University for students who are academically competitive for admission to a Queen s undergraduate program but who do not meet the required admission standard for English language proficiency. Students accepted to Queen s through QBridge pathway are required to complete Fall and Winter sessions of the English for Academic Purposes Program. Students with higher English language test scores may be considered for QBridge Accelerated. Eligible Degree Programs Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Science Bachelor of Science and Engineering English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program English Language Requirements TOEFL ibt 58 IELTS 5 MELAB 58 PTE 40 Students must achieve the required standing in EAP (a final grade of A- or B, depending on the level) GRADUATE PROGRAMS Students who apply to some graduate programs at Queen s University may be offered admission conditional on meeting English language proficiency requirements. Success for these students in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program meets the language requirements for the School of Graduate Studies.
