Key Stage 2 National Curriculum Tests 2018 (SATs)

What are End of Key Stage 2 tests? National tests in English and Mathematics, usually taken at the end of Key Stage 2 (at age 11). They have been designed to ensure that pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education and that schools do not allow pupils to fall behind. Their aim is to make sure as many pupils as possible are secondary ready by the time they leave.

Reporting and Assessment There are two sorts of assessments: National Curriculum Tests and Teacher Assessments. National Curriculum Tests For KS2 English reading, mathematics and science the pupils will receive either working at the expected standard or has not met the expected standard. The KS2 English writing framework contains 3 standards: working towards the expected standard working at the expected standard working at greater depth within the expected standard

In July 2018, each pupil will receive: A raw score (number of raw marks awarded). A scaled score in each tested subject. Confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard. KS2 test results will be available from 7.30am on Tuesday 10 July for teachers.

What is meant by scaled scores? Each pupil s raw test score will be converted into a score on the scale, either at, above or below 100. The scale has a lower end point (80) and an upper end point (120). A child who achieves the national standard (a score of 100) will be judged to have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests. Children who achieve a scaled score of 110 or above will have achieved the higher standard.

Test Timetable Day Day Test Monday 14th May Test GPAS Spelling GPAS short answers Tuesday 15th May Reading Wednesday 16th May Paper 1: Arithmetic Paper 2: Reasoning Thursday 17th May Paper 3: Reasoning

National Curriculum Tests Week Tests take place in classrooms in the normal environment, but displays are covered up and pupils may be sat in rows so that no copying can take place. There is a breakfast club for Y6 so that every child can have a healthy start to the day which is free to all Y6 pupils from 8am, Monday to Thursday.

Mathematics The children will sit 3 tests: Paper 1: Arithmetic - 30 minutes to answer 36 questions worth a total of 40 marks, covering: Four operations, fractions, decimals and percentages Papers 2 and 3: Reasoning 40 minutes each worth a total of 35 marks each, covering: Real life problems and the application of maths

Writing Writing will be teacher assessed based on the Teacher Assessment Framework (TAFs). The main standards are: Working towards the expected standard, working at the expected standard and working at greater depth within the standard. However, some pupils may be working below the Key Stage and will receive a pre key stage assessment. Some schools will be moderated by the DFE to ensure accuracy of standards. We ensure accuracy through moderation within school, school to school and by the local authority.

Reading The reading paper lasts for 1 hour and is comprised of 3 unrelated texts, progressing in difficulty. 50 marks are available. Questions are designed to assess comprehension and understanding of a child s reading ability. Questions may require a short response, multiple choice or an extended response and explanation.

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Test Two tests: a spelling test of 20 words that lasts about 15 minutes. A 45 minute separate test based on spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. Various questions: multiple choice, short sentences. 50 questions. Spelling test score is added to grammar test score. Total is out of 70.

Example Grammar question

Example Grammar question Tick the option that shows how the underlined words are used in the sentence. My baby brother was born in the hospital where my father works. Tick one. as a preposition phrase as a relative clause as a main clause as a noun phrase

How is my child being supported in English? Pupils have been given CGP SPAG booklets to support revision for the Grammar Test. Additional English lessons are provided if it is felt that a pupil might need extra support in developing a particular skills area. These sessions may take the form of one to one tuition or small group teaching. Through regular testing it is hoped pupils will become familiar with the format of the tests and be well prepared to cope with the type of questions they will have to face in May. Booster classes are on a Thursday from 3.35 till 4.30pm. Additionally, there are two lunchtimes dedicated support in Room 12.

How can I help my child in English? Regularly check your child s spelling knowledge of everyday words. Use the Pupil Planner to test your child s spelling: p138 Encourage your child to read as frequently as possible, asking them questions about what they have read. Encourage your child to use the BBC Bitesize KS2 Revisewise site. Explore and use APPs that have quick fire grammar quizzes. E.g. AlanPeat.com, A+ Spelling etc

What help can pupils receive during the test? In the reading test, children must read the text and questions by themselves, but MAY have help recording their answers, if this is done in the normal classroom situation. In the grammar paper, questions may be read to a child if necessary. Answers may be recorded by a scribe if required. In maths, teachers can read questions to any child who asks. Some children will have the whole paper read to them, on a one to one basis.

What help can pupils receive during the test? Teachers can encourage, but not guide or say that an answer is correct or incorrect. Some children can be given up to 25% extra time if they have identified learning needs. This has to be applied for in advance. Words on a test paper can be transcribed where a marker may not be able to read a child s answer.
